My father-in-law is looking to purchase a laptop for his wife and was asking some questions.
What would you suggest would be the 3 or 4 key things to look for when looking for a good laptop.
He wants to spend $900 or less. She mainly uses it to surf the web, downloading videos, and storing videos and pictures.
They currently have broadband with a wireless router.
thanks for the advice.

Well my wife went to the dell site and got a refurbished laptop that she plays City of Heroes on and does the things you mentioned. It only cost us less then $600 dollars. You just have to keep looking and see what they have from day to day.

Didn't give us very much to run with. Almost any notebook can do what she is going to mainly use it for. The question is, what else will she do with it, burn DVDs? play games? etc?
Also need to know if they are willing to buy online, or only from a local store. Online would technically be cheaper, but if there is ever an issue, it's a pain to deal with sometimes, not all the time; but sometimes. Local may be the way to go, especially for warranty and service issues. I took a look at a local store to me, and found a nice notebook that would easily do what she is looking for, and it's only about $750.
HP Pavilion dv6105us 15.4" Widescreen Notebook Computer With AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology MK-36 With Enhanced Virus Protection
Might even have a $150 mail in rebate on top of the price. Tell them to look into various local ads, read up on the new processors, and go from there.
Primary things are.
Processor - Probably AMD
Hard Drive - Usually 80+ gigs
Video Card - Something decent
DVD Burner - Simple Yes or No
Screen Size - Usually 15" or bigger

The first thing you should do is check Consumer Reports. This is more important with laptops than most other capital purchases, because they will tell you all about the hidden flaws, such as which one has tearable rubber key covers and which one overheats in 5 minutes if you try to play CoH.
