So i was mapping in the Arid Sea 2 day..
When i met this dude

Trib tells me that if you look north you can find a portal back to Tyria as well

Yup, going through that portal puts you right next to the guy that can teleport you to the Arid Sea.......if you look north, you can see that Warrior Statue in the distance.
Requirements to use the portals: Must have access to prophecies, and have beatin Sanctum Cay mission. And you must be able to control the wurms.

indeed you can travel back as well..
and in the desolation, you'll notice the statue of the first 15 attributes quest of prophecies in the north =)
(the one that falls down and becomes a bridge)

As long as you are in the desert and can get to the portal in NF, yes.

I think you need to be able to control wurms to access the portals. So I would guess no.
