| TANKS - Ever use whirlwind as a control element...? |
|
|
|
Ok, so, I wanna tank - it's in me, but I just don't really like any of the tank builds excepts for the one I got to 50. BUT - I was wondering if anyone has ever used the whirlwind power as a control element as a tank?
If you got chilling embrace on, they'll still aggro onto you even if you are making them flop into the air. Anyways, the point is they are flying instead of fighting - I think that might be just as good as using fault to stun them or maybe ice patch to slip them.
Anyone ever tried this?????

Whirlwind does knockback, not repel, but the effect is similar. It has a small footprint, and takes a small chunk of endurance for each foe bounced away, each time. On a tank with other toggles running, this could seriously endanger your end bar, and your life. While it'd be great if it could work, I'm just not seeing it happen.

No, I haven't tried it... next question? :D
The concept seems really interesting, and it seems that you've already tried it out with your example. If I'm I remember correctly, Whirlwind is in the Super Speed pool, I can't use that power pool because of the amount of lag it puts on my computer. Though its fun to run really, really fast.

I've tried it out once or twice for speed tanker builds, but I've never kept it. Seems best suited as a "last resort" powers, and most tankers seem to already have access to one or two powers like that at higher levels. Considering the end cost for a large group of enemies, you'd almost have to build the character around WW to really get the most out of it, and that's not something I'd be inclined to do with a tanker.

The only AT I have ever seen use this power effectively is a blaster. She was built as a blapper, to use a term that I think should be changed, but that is another debate for another time. In conjunction with a good controller or a defender's immobilize, it can eliminate the knockback effect. I have to agree that it wouldn't be all that advisable with a tank due to all the toggles that tanks have to run to remain as effective as possible. I would say pass on this unless someone can figure out a way to overcome the endurance factor. It is a rather cool concept though, and it's nice to see people trying to come up with uses for powers that most avoid.

I tried it with my first Tank (early i5) and I had to respec out of it, the end use was manageable what wasn't was the fact I was trying to keep the group/s aggroed on me.
Everytime I used it, enemies would get knocked back, if a teammate happened to hit the group with an AoE or just one of the enemies I knocked back it/they would ignore me and go after that player.
I now use Footstomp with a similar effect but it does way more damage, uses less endurance and I don't loose the aggro of the group, this could also be due to Gauntlet effect.
Perhaps Gauntlet can now keep enough aggro that Whirlwind wont make the enemies ignore the Tank even if a teammate hits them after knockback.
I would say try a team mission on test server with your build, find out what effect your team has on knockback from whirlwind effect.
I like the idea though, give it a try.
I would say 6 slotting whirlwind is the best idea if your going to use it often, slot with 3 Reduce End Costs as soon as possible, perhaps 1 +ACC as well then add what you think appropriate. Its certainly going to require Fitness power pool, maybe even Hasten.
