I was wondering if you can lown a hat from one of your firends and show it the guy in LA for him to make you some for your cahracters and then give the original hat back to its owner

No you cannot do this. You can only show hats to the NPC for characters on your account. A guildie and I tried this last night just for grins and it does not work.
