Thinking about checking out GW

Hey all :) I'm a former DAoC player and current CoH player and I've been kicking arounf the idea of checking out GuildWars, but I'm not sure if I should hop in with Nightfall, or do I need to get the original GW game first? And I'm curious about how much of the game you can get into solo, I'm all for teaming, but I have little time to really play so I tend to solo quite a bit. DAoC lost me after 3 years because it became impossible to 'keep up' with all the younger players that could play constantly & run 6 hour raids on a daily/weekly basis.

Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Glad you posted this, every now and then a few of us lurking around the edges of Guild Wars temptation are tempted to dabble but fear the first step. :)

You don't HAVE to get the first 2 installments of Guild Wars to enjoy yourself. So far I've soloed most of my way through the game. I say most because I haven't finished any of them YET (I'm 2 Missions away on Factions AND Nightfall). If you've played a Pet Controller (especially a Fire or Illusion) or a Mastermind (CoV) you'll probably be a bit ahead on soloing...Henchman/Heroes act sort of like the pets/minions do in CoH/V. If you LOVED playing a Controller/Mastermind you'll probably have fun playing a Minion Master Necromancer (it's like the OLD version of Fire Imps, only a little better looking :p )

I'd say start with Nightfall, then, if you like it (and you probably will :p ) get Prophecies (the first Guild Wars), maybe even Factions.

Just Curious, which AT was your Main Character in COH?

I'm a tank at heart, but I play a pretty mean Healer as well, was kind of leaning toward the Monk class, though I'm also an altoholic, so I can imagine I'll try most classes at one point or another.

RE: Thinking about checking out GW

all the 3 campaigns are stand alone meaing that you do not need the other two to play the third. with this being said, i would suggest prophecies first because it has imo the best learing curve and gives you the most skills for free. then once you have completed prophecies you can move onto the other two. i personally think factions is only necessary if you want to get into pvp because they introduce a few bridges between pve and pvp but other than that it is kinda boring and dull.

Ahhh...a Wo/Man after me own heart. I've one of almost each class (no Elementalist or Ritualist yet), but my favorite so far is my Warrior/(Monk,Necromancer,Ranger,Dervish,Paragon).

RE: Thinking about checking out GW

Its cool that you are looking at getting into GW its a great game. If you are looking to solo most of it I would recommend Nightfall first (Heroes which are your own personalized henchies), at some point it would be good to get prophicies if for no other reason than to know what is going on. Even though they are stand alone games the stories do intertwine and its always good to know why some people have vendettas against certain NPCs (*&%$ing lych!) any way that aside factions is good for playing around with the pvp element, a lot of pvpers dont take to kindly to new players and it is easier if you have some clue as to what is going on. All in all for quality and fun and great story all three are a must in my opinion but thats me. Well hope this helped if not oh well nothing new for me :D See ya on GW.

RE: Thinking about checking out GW

if you do buy a chapter of GW. i would recomend nightfalls first, and to READ when going through the tutorial's and watch what your being taught thing's like argo area's and such are very important in the game. factions does have a simmalar tutorial but only has 13 missions. as aposed to the 20 nightfalls has. prof has alot of free skills sure but you'll need to be able to learn on your own if you plan to play solo. also factions was the lower end of the 3 chapters in most ppl's opinions. if you find you enjoy nightfalls you can always buy the other 2 chapters and add them to your account for the extra slots for new charas.

RE: Thinking about checking out GW

I found the topic familiar... so I did some research in my old posts and I found this:

http://www.gameamp.com/forum/showTopic/11998.php

This thread was made long ago, before Factions or Nightfall were released so it lacks of some insight. You have to consider, for instance, the fact that the release of each independant episode is making players spread around different areas, making it harder to find people to play certain missions or quests (and sometimes you'll really like to kill those henchemen.... ^^). With Nightfall, the develepers hope to have found a solution to it, which is the addition of heroes. It basically means that you would have a computer character acting the way you want him to act during a mission (you select their skills, etc).

I have also play DAoC. I can tell you that GW has nothing to do with either CoH or DAoC. Here, the main thing is not about spending years leveling your character but about spending your time trying to figure out combinations of skills that will work out in each situation... and also in combination with your teammates' skill builds.

Weapons? Unique items? .... forget about all that. To be honest, the item market here is quite bad and it's not very important (in fact, getting involved with the market here is a pain in the butt). There is no best item. Each good weapon and armor will work better with a certain build but can't be considered "the best". In some aspects, the value of many are considered by the looks of it. What I mean is that the perfect mods or stats of the weapons are not as rare as to not to be found by a big amount of players, but the combination of those with certain looks/skins are. For instance, I remember that in DAoC, to get certain items you needed to develop certain profession or buy that item from a guy with that profession. Here, items just drop randomly from dead foes and the item can only be picked by a member of your party (the drop will have his/her name on it). Though good items will drop at a lesser rate, your chances to get one are higher than having to develop a DAoC character proffession to lvl 50, and you can always try to "savage" the best adds of a weapon to use them on a weapon with a better basic stat. To give you an idea, a weapon has:

- A basic damage (it maximum will depend on the kind of weapon: sword, axe, bow... normally you will want to use a weapon acording to your primary proffession although you might want to use your secondary's proffession). It is not hard at all to find a maximum damage weapon.
- The main mod. This one is a stat inherent to each particular weapon. It adds some kind of damage or energy. There are different kinds and it does also has maximums. Some add a percentage of damage if your health is above 50%, some others add damage if your health is below 50% etc.
- 2 add-ons. Can only be used on a particular weapon. For instance, a sword uses a handle and a hilt. They do also add a certain bonus either on your attributes, damage, conditions....... These add-ons are the ones you can savage from weapons and use it in others.

Well it's pretty poor explanation, but it's just to give you an idea. You look for maximum stats, but the only "unique" items are the ones that combine those stats with certain looks.

Anyway... enough is enough... I think I wasn't very clear lol but have a look on the link I gave you and hopefully between that thread and this one you take a decision.

Good luck!

K
