Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

Hey, I did the open Guild Wars beta before it came out and I didn't really like it, but I know ALOT has changed since then. I used to play City of Heroes/Villains and Star Wars Galaxies, so I am no stranger to MMORPGS (MMOFPS in Star Wars Galaxies' case), but I am probably a stranger to Guild Wars now. I heard that Factions and Nightfall play as separate games, basically, can anyone confirm this? If so, which one do you recommend? I am thinking of making my character a Ranger (Mainly to handle creatures, I was a Creature Handler in Star Wars Galaxies), but if every class can use pets, I would want to choose a different one. So can anyone tell me which expansion-type Guild Wars I should get?

PS - I know about the whole no monthly fee thing, so no need to remind me, or just remind me because it is so awsome :p

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

In response to which chapter to get- definitely Nightfall
it has improved so much since the initial release of GW, and i'm sure you will enjoy it as much as the rest of us
and, yes, Nightfall and Factions can be played as stand-alone games- there's no need to have any of them to play the others.

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

Yes all three play as separate games or you can link them together to get the most out of them. I like all three. If you want what most are playing now I'd say choose Nightfall but like I said before they are all good choices but really depend on how you like to play. As far as ranger you can only have one pet. You can choose any class and choose ranger as your secondary and you can get a pet. If your wanting more than one to control I'd say look into being a minion master which you can choose a necromancer to make minions. There are several different types of MM builds from necromancer/monk to ritualist/necromancer. Of course all of that is also personal preference. Anyway I hope that helps a little and which ever you choose I hope you enjoy and have many hours of fun.

no you can play factions alone just as the other two. Each is stand alone.

Thanks, in that case, I think I might choose a different class and have Ranger as my secondary :)

As a side note, while I would recommend Nightfall, in general, a lot of great Beastmaster skills are Factions-specific, so if you're interested in builds with pets, you should pick it up at some point, or at least get a skill pack that contains the Ranger skills from Factions.

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

You want to get nightfall for sure but guild wars is better if you have all 3 games and link em together so you could play em all. like if you want to control stuff then i am not sure what you should do this class dose kinda sound wired but you could always make a better build for it but i say go Necromancer/Ranger and i would make him in proh so you can beat proh and then factions and then nightfall and trust me that would use alot of your time.

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

Get Nightfall for sure but Beastmasters in GW are generally underappreciated althought they can pretty much pwn anything. Rangers are also the most versatile class because they can do almost anything from spiking, attacking a large number of foes, trapping, crippling, degen, pressure, so many possibilites. Minion Masters are more useful and theres usually one in every group.

I was thinking of a Ranger/Elementist or Elementist/Ranger combination, is this any good now? I thought it was back in Beta.

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

for a new player i would definitly recommend a Warrior/Ranger or W/R. a W/R is great for new players because the warrior is one of the easier classes to play, and the pet helps do some extra damage. in order of what games to buy you should get Prophecies => NF => Factions, because Prophecies is rlly where u learn most of the lore and game mechanics. Than at an early on point after u beat prophecies u would probably want to do more PvE, which NF is great at. Finally Factions is great to introduce u to PvP which is the main focus of the game. i hope u rlly like GW

Hand of Blood Lvl X Spines/Regen Stalker...Triumph
Mystic Entity lvl 24 Katana/Regen Scrapper...Champion
Panzer Faust Lvl 23 SS/Energy Brute (retired)...Protector
Arbiter Darkwind Lvl 33 Thugs/Dark MM (retired)...Protector

Thanks to Mimori for the great sig

I'd consider myself a semi-new player, I was in the Beta :P , but that was what I had thought initially, then I remembered how much I enjoyed Elementist.

One final question, Which server (if there are different ones) do you guys recommend?

**EDIT** I just looked up the prices on bestbuy.com, and I don't think i'm willing to spend $150 for all 3 :/, so I think I'll stick with Nightfall.

Well there is if you choose American, European, Asian and so on as to which you prefer. Most choose the area they live in to find more people on the same time they are but once you choose you can always hang in the international districts which is open for all of those servers so you can team up with people all over.

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

Welcome to Gameamp, McCusto!

To help answer some of your questions:

1) Not all professions handle creatures, as you put it. The ranger profession/class is the only one that can tame/control a pet.

2) As to which chapter, well each has it's own contributions. If you're into the PvE side of things: I recommend Prophecies (Ch.1) and Nightfall (Ch.3). They have a fairly deep storyline in Prophecies and is continued/finished in Nightfall. If you're the PvP type: Factions (Ch.2) is more your cup of tea, so to speak. But to get the complete experience, get all 3. It's what I did. :-)

3) Where to get them, I saw that EBWorld had a sale at the local mall I frequent. They had 30% off any Guild Wars game-any chapter. I have no idea how long the offer will last OR if they even offer it on their website.

I hope you get it and enjoy the game like we have.

/cheer

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

Hmmm, thanks for the replies! Now I know I am going to be a Ranger, whether it be my Primary of Secondary profession. I am for sure getting Nightfall because I do perfer PvE (It was one of the main reasons why I quit Star Wars Galaxies, the only content became PvP). Hopefully I will be gaming with you guys in the Guild Wars world sometime next week!

Merry Christmas, all!

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

Personally, I would recommend getting Prophecies first (for a PvE person).

Reason being: it's slow start. Factions and Night Fall were too focused on leveling up quickly. You don't get to fully explore with the different levels, but instead you are quickly wisked away to the mainland that is immediately harder than the pre-island that you start on.

Also with Prophecies, you have the Skill Quests (which btw, are the BEST). With skill quests, you don't have to spend all of your money buying out EVERY skill - instead, just do a quest for it. Mind you, not every skill has its quest, but most that you need do.

I'm not saying that starting with Nightfall is bad, I'm simply pointing out that you shouldn't necessarily start out with it. Nightfall has it's pros and cons, but I still feel that Prophecies has it made. If asked, most people would probably say that Propehcies is (so far) the best of the three, but I mean it's up to you.

uh... I bough factions before proph -.- ... Anyway, if you really like pvp... I'd suggest factions... Otherwise, nightfall.

And HERE is my best GW video so far...

RE: Thinking about getting Guild Wars...

My favorite is Nightfall atm because of heroes and stuff, but if you were to get one of them i would start with prophecies since it started off the game and it shows the basics of GW unlike nightfall or factions which just jump into lvl 20 monsters in noob island. Proph is probly the best choice if you were to get 1 at a time. Only thing thats good about factions like everyone said is the sins and rits are good in pvp, and NF has heroes that you can do missions and quests with. But it's really your choice.

Prophecies isn't called prophecies, it's called Guild Wars. The other two chapters have their names on the boxes, but since prophecies came out first it just says Guild Wars and has a Knight on one side and a Necromancer on the other.

Hope this helps!!
