Could be (and sounds like) overheating, check that all fans are connected properly and aren't clogged over with dust or anything. Other than that, have it checked out over at your local PC store as it doesn't sound software related (but thats just my best guess from what information you have given and im no tech wizz)

I agree with OJ. Sounds like a heat issue. Get a nice can of air and open up the side and clean all that dust out of there. And Make sure to check ALL connections, not just fan connections.

yep, sounds most likely a heat issue. having to wait before it works again sounds like it was cooling down to a workable temp.
like the man said get a can of compressed air, available from nearly all art/craft/hobby/model shops and while the pc is switched of, take the side panel off and give all the fans and components and good blast. dont put a normal vacuum cleaner any where near it to suck any dust up, you may well kill it completely like a friend of mine.
once you've air blasted it, turn it on with the side panel off just to see if all the fans are spinning up properly.
dont try wiping any dust off by hand or with a cloth other than plastic fan blades. the static from you or a cloth will not do the components any good
let us know how it goes

Agreed with all of the above, this happened to me earlier this year (summer 2006), took us ages to figure it out, we ended up replacing the power supply unit, heat sync, cpu fan, fitted a new case fan, but we figured its probably just the cpu and case fans.
Give your pc a nice "blow out" with compressed air and try again.
If that didnt help much, try checking out the pcu fans heat sync etc, u might just need to put in a little bit more thermal paste.
We also ended up having to switch the pc thermometers the other way round because some retard who made my pc when i first bought it put the case and cpu fans the wrong way round.
If you still have problems after that, check out the case fans and maybe put a second on.
If it still doesnt work im sorry i wasted your money :P, unlikely to do with the software, youd have to get it checked out at some other specialist store
Good Luck!

Thats not necessarily true, my dad has done it a couple of times to my comp, and if anything its made it better, you just have to be rather careful :P

I never use anything but the vacuum cleaner to clean dust from my computer, I do use a plastic thingie at the end and never stick it close to anything but the fans though :)

The good thing is that I don't have to worry about this, because I have a watercooled PC (yes realy!). Just works awesome to me and it's from "Koolance" (can I say that here? Hope so). Good luck with getting it right and I have one more tip for you:
-When starting up the computer, press del to enter set-up. Somewhere there you can check the temperature of your motherboard =]

I've had this problem twice before and it did confuse me on what was wrong.
I tried cleaning the computer, taking the computer apart and re-assembling it (which all worked) but there was always one common factor when doing so... the power was removed.
When I experienced this problem a THIRD time, I didn't do any of the above execept from un-plugging the power cord from my PC (while the PC is off) and then re-plugging it.
This completely solved the restart and crash issue.
I then went and purchased a new power supply unit and everything was fixed.
So the problem could be that the PC isn't getting enough power.
If not, sorry I couldn't help you.

Did you know that some plastics can carry a static charge? It came as a shock to me (pun intended) when I found out!
You really shouldn't put anything inside your case unless it's grounded or pure air.
Anyway, I'm another for the overheating idea or that your system is so full of crap it needs a clean out. Some virus type nasties don't always show up on scans especially if they have been inadvertently installed by the user and the worst cases I've found are when peoples kids have been looking at porn and installed all sorts of malware.
Your local PC shop might offer a spring clean package if you're not sure how to remove old stuff and defrag but its worth looking on the net to see how it's done to both save money and stop other people snooping through your files.
That's my 10 cents...hope you sort it!

Ermm, i dunno about anyone else, but some people my age might find that slightly offensive, and unless a virus has really hacked at LOTS of the key OS software, its more unlikely to be a virus thats making the pc turn itself off at random intervals.
The rest of your post i agree with though.

correct, plenty of documented cases of vacuum cleaners killing electronics due to static discharge. if you use a vacuum the best ones are the small handheld ones, but even those are meant for purely fans and dirt in keyboards. my buddie killed his ps2 by vacuuming the inside..
not saying it will definitly kill the pc, but there is a chance, and not one i'd personally take.
