You can always try Maple Story, it's free to download and play. It might be slightly disappointing though, if you're used to Guild Wars' standards.

RE: Any Other Decent MMORPGs?

Just 2 that are worth a look at. As far as non-mainstream MMOs go (everyone knows about WoW, Warhammer etc.)

EvE Online

If you have no life, and wish for your life to be centered around an MMO, then play EvE online, I played it for quite a while - and it's very satisfying in terms of player direction, and freedom of choice.

It's basically an MMORPG based around spaceships, the game is set in a VAST universe, it's realllllly huge, luckily you have warp drives on your ships.

What you do in EvE is up to you, you can do missions for various agents and become involved in the storyline, you can be a hauler/courier for other people's goods, you could be an ore miner you can be a pirate hunter and hunt down baddies in your fighter ships, or you can be a pirate yourself - threatening others and being a general menace - destroying all those who oppose you.

Or you could be something totally different. It's up to you.

The game also has a unique way of character progression, instead of levels, EvE has a time based skill training system where certain attributes can be set to be learned - this continues whilst you are logged off making it very friendly to those who have work/school.

The game is very well executed, the presentation is great, and the community are very mature and helpful.

There is a very good free trial for it that is quite long and doesn't require any credit card details etc. if that is a problem for you.

The downside is that if you prefer more directed/linear styled games like GW, you may find yourself lost, or even bored by EvE, however you've got nothing to lose by trying it out.

For more info about EvE click here

Anarchy Online

Another futuristic MMO, however this time set on solid ground.

Basically it's the year 200000 {or something like that} and its set on a planet called rubi-ka and there are 2 warring factions (and 1 neutral faction) fighting for control of a substance called notum. Naturally you must choose a side.

Anarchy has the elements of your typical MMO, with a sci-fi theme which tbh is quite refreshing. It also has some unique ideas and mechanics.

It also has a wide selection of classes, some you will be familiar with, others are wacky and exciting.

Presentation and excecution is generally clean, the graphics are showing their age but theres nothing gamebreaking there, solid is the word i'd use.

The community is rather small, but I've never had any problems with them, although alot of them are very high in level in comparison.

The actual original game itself is free to play, however is you wish to play the expansions (I think there are 4 now, and owning them is particularly advantageous) then a small monthly fee is required, it's alot less than other MMOs i've played though.

Again risk fee to try out gets thumbs up from me :)

I've been keeping my eye on Warhammer Online. Though it won't be out till this summer, but it's looking rather tasty. :D

Couldnt agree more. Eve-online is a very nice and different MMORPG. I have been playing it for a bit over a year now, and I rarely get bored with it, because there is so many different things to do. Everybody plays on the same server, and people are generally much more mature than in other MMORPGs that I have played (Guildwars, WoW etc.)
Also you might want to know this; if you want to train ALL skills in the game to the max it will take a bit over 31 years (yes 31 years, not a typo) so to do something really well, you have to specialize. Like if you want to run missions (same as quests basically) you want to specialize your gunnery/missile/laser skills, depending on your race.

Anyway good luck :)

RE: Any Other Decent MMORPGs?

It is a great time to be in this mode; that is to say looking for another game to try before you buy. Most of the major MMORPG's now have trials you can download that let you play for free from anywhere from 7-30 days and many of the retail box games give you the first 30 days of the subscription free. It really depends on your needs and your computer. Some of the newer games require more hardware firepower so might not be right for you if you have an older system. If you like PVP EVE and Shadowbane both get good marks on that category.
I will do my part and at least make a soft pitch for Everquest 2 and hee hee if you stop by AMP's EQ2 section you can get a decent feel for the game.

Erm...thats insane.

Now to the real question: How good is WoW? I mean, it looks like a far better Runescape, but crossed with GW....

How good is it really? It looks quite good, but is GW better?

If anything, it's Diablo 3. Because there was Diablo 1

Then Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord Of Destruction

I miss Diablo it's f**** awesome!

And as for Maple Story, played it in the summer because I was bored, as a joke, and it wasn't a good joke... It's a kid's game.

But play Diablo II, that's a lot of fun, and it's about £25 (about $40) for the game and expansion and free to play after that.

RE: Any Other Decent MMORPGs?

Only problem with free trieals is that they're huge...I nearly downloaded the 10 day WoW trial today, until it told me that it would take 60 hours (yes I had waited 5 mins, I didnt stop straight away)

3.5 gigs is huge.

It's way different then GW, the playstyle indeed is more comparable with RS..
WoW is bigger, more options, more classes, races, higher levelcap, basicly everthing is 'more' then GW, but it lacks in variety imo, you grind (farming for xp) FAR more in GW, and overall WoW takes more of your time..
And GW's pvp > WoW's pvp.

I found WoW getting repetitive after 200 hours, and got back to GW again, but they really are different games, don't try to compare those.. :)

Correction: It CAN take more of your time than GW. Even though it CAN/WILL take lots of time IF you want to raid.
WoW CAN be played casually too but then you won't be able to raid.
Most people know WoW for it being massive, time consuming nolife raiding pack, but guess what: I've been playing WoW for 6 months now and haven't been raiding a single time. O.o
Any game can be played casually. You won't progress as fast as the more active players and nolifers but you still can enjoy the game.

The thing that confuses me the most is that lots of people keep moaning that A-Net keeps making farming and grinding harder in GW. "Mew mew! A-Net nerfed that!", "Pew pew! A-Net nerfed that too!" "Dew dew, we can't grind now!", "Few few! Let's quit the game!". -.-
And everytime some other MMORPG gets involved in a discussion people most likely say that "Pewmewzewdew, there's way more grinding than there is in GW!"
And still there's tons of builds here for farming and rant threads everytime farming gets tougher.
Uhmz, so you want it or not?O.o

But anyways, if you're into farming and grinding, check out WoW. :P

If you're into PvP, WoW offers some too, but it's not as PvP oriented as GW, though PvP in WoW is quite kewl too! ^^

Nobody here has mentioned City of Villains or Heroes. It's a great game that is fashioned like a comic book, has levels like GW, but there are no weapons or armor, you simply use your super powers. There are some weapon based powers, but you can't get a different Katana or Battleaxe, you use the powers from that. People talk like it's a comic book, and it's not as addictive as WoW.

WoW is not better than GW or vice-versa, but they are different , WoW is vast, time consuming and gives you something that GW doesn't really give you which is options, going from your race to your class, from your weapons to your profession choice, in my opinion the PvE part of WoW is simply superior, but for PvP GW all the way, but don't get me wrong since WoW PvP is a lot of fun, also everyone that talks about WoW being too cartooned and it just sucks, believe me when I say that WoW landscape is one of the most beautiful in game landscape I have ever seen and this comes from someone that has been playing GW for 17 months, anyways it's always your choice, good luck!

Well, if you want total free MMO's tou can check out the site of GPotato -http://gpotato.com/.
Their are MMO's even more unique then their name.
My personal favorite is Spacecobowoyz -don't ask, just play.

Archlord is Free-to-Play I played the Beta and followed it around for a while after Beta-version and right before Chirstmas an annoucement came in that they changed it.

THIS IS WoW Free-to-Play, one sidenote: You WILL lose in PvP when you have less potions then you're foe :P only minor.

I'd also warmly recommend EVE if you want to try something a little different, and have the time for it :)
If you have a lot of time on your hands its great, I havn't even bothered to try playing when I've got other things occupying me :)

I've played it for a little more than three years too and from, and I still do new things occasionally, the most recent being turning into an ebil pirate, it's a blast ;-)

This little trailer shows the game off a bit in all its glory, although the almost five year old graphics engine will be updated in not too long, and a free 14-day trial can be found here.

geeman i completely agree with u, but CoV takes too long to level IMO, but i have a short attention span. it is also incredibly repetitive and it lacks any sort of economy watsoever, and many builds are overpowered, or believed to be overpower by everybody(u being a prime example with ur bots MM saying u could kill my thugs mm cuz thugs suck] sry if thats a flame. saying that the game is very addicting and u will spend hours upon hours making new characters that never pass level five because its so addicting to make ur own superman. its incredibly cool to whip out ur katana and start slashing away regenerating damage very quickly.

as far as ur build is concerned the game is way unbalanced with bots MMs being to overpowered, kinetics and radiation corrupters too good, SS/Stone brutes Bots/FF MMs /Regen stalkers being way overpowered to the point of prejudice

its fun if ur creative but still wanna stick to the basics and carry on w/ ur life

FFXI is fun for ur classic MMO with an in-depth economy, and many fun classes, and a primary/secondary class system like GW. the game has a huge player base that is often very friendly

I haven't raided at all, but I still found WoW to be more time consuming, it really takes alot of time to gather money (even for skills), it takes alot of time to get a high level etc, and that's where the grinding kicks in..

____________

more ontopic:
Archlord will be free to play after some date in january, but I've played the beta, and that was, well, not great..
It looked like WoW, the playingstyle that is; alot of grinding (again, beta and only the first part of it).
The surroundings weren't that great (beta, but still), the professions, classes etc didn't seem to offer enough for me, my general impression of the beta was a small 6/10, I bet the pvp rocks if you've got a good guild, but the rest?

took a break from GW for 2 a 3 weeks now ( did come online for the winter event ) and bought BF2142.

but i really wanted a mmorpg like runescape WITHOUT the ugly graphics, without the slow gameplay so i now im thinking of WoW...

anyway, knight online is a cool game to, but don't try runescape, its fun if you below 12 years and have a bad PC.

Personally I've gotta admit that I'm a real Betawhore as Gameamp put it so wisely.

I would advice to specially check out Knight's Online, Archlord, Spacecowboyz, FLYFF is some what of weird, Rappelz, Silkroad and if you're willing to pay RF online.

RE: Any Other Decent MMORPGs?

I feel particularly curious about Age of Conan.... Conan was one of my young-age comics... ^^

RE: Any Other Decent MMORPGs?

Nobody mentions the grandaddy of RPGs? Then I will.

You can download a 10 day free trial of DDO- Dungeons and Dragons Online. It's pretty cool.

Pros:

Based on D&D 3.5 Rules

Party Search feature is nice.

Lot's of Humor on the game.

Has a "GM" that Narrates your adventures.

Don't need to drop a ton of gold on keys in case there might be chests.

Cons

Download is about a Gig or so.

Your first name must be Unique (Not your full name, just your first name)

After playing GW the controls/UI will screw with your head.
