wow

I have been playing COH for over 2 years, those who remember know it is the first and only game I ever played. recently (mentioned in another post) I lost a few friends to RL and other games. Last eve I received an email form a friend with an invite for a 10 day free trial to WOW. So I used the great resources available to me and went to the WOW gameamp and read half the evening the away. BTW an awesome guide by Grifter!! TY Grift for all the work you do. I must say WOW is slightly intimating however it is downloading as I type. I am taking the leap into a new world putting on a brave front so I will do my fellow COH'ers proud. Thank Goodness my friend is waiting for me on the other side to guide my way. I will let you all know how it works out, you know know I make like it in the other world.

RE: wow

Hummm,

WoW is pretty to look at, but the reason I stop playing is that it takes forever to get anywhere. I popped on yesterday. It took 25 minutes to get from where I was to the map where the mission was, then another 5 minute run to the mission. Hope you like it, but I prefer CoH/V speed.

RE: wow

I have played WoW for five months...

- I've lost multiple friend IRL because they became addicted (one reason for me to stop)
- It takes forever to get there (second reason I stopped)
- It got boring (third reason I stopped)
- All the people I knew on there were total jerks; all they were interested in was gold, gear and XP (the fourth reason for me to stop)

Personally, I don't like the game anymore, but if you want to play it, go ahead, and have fun, and try not to get addicted and become a total WoW wreckage.

RE: wow

I did the trial. At first I kinda liked it. Then I didn't. A few months went by and I decided to give it another try. So I went out to Walmart and bought the game for like $20. I did it again with the 30 days included. Tried it. Didn't like it at all. Too slow, too irritating. User base is really annoying.

RE: wow

Got it for my son for Christmas. Meh, annoying use of one of my computers, and he spends 90% of his time traveling. I would make a joke here, but it is freaking pathetic. If heroes thought the long travel times across multiple city-zones was annoying...well, WoW makes them look like going across the street for a pack of smokes. Oye!

The only positive is that WoW runs decently on my weakest PC and the wife has authorized me to build a new RIG! Hehehe, good thing she doesnt know that it was all planned...

RE: wow

I have a RL friend who splits his time betweem WoW & CoH. He is sort of like I used to be when I switched from EQ to CoH.

You stay with the old game because of time & money invested. I tried WoW for 10 days. I remember early in my EQ days begging for SOW from druids/sammies. WoW is 100x worse. The travel times are ridiculous especially for missions/quests that take under 5 minutes to complete.

it's pretty to look at, but I prefer CoH ( though i still keep a acct on DOAC too -- every once in awhile you just need a change)

RE: wow

Dont let all the post deter you....hate to see you have to rid you comp of CoH but WoW isnt that bad. Its all a judgement call to be straight honest. Yeah the travel time is bad but its only bad in lower stages of the game (no mount or missing flight paths). There are ways around it..there are some builds that have built in travel modes (hunters/druids/mages). Or you can befriend a Warlock and have them drag you all over. Once you get flight paths covered its not bad especially since they designed it that you didnt have to stop at each connections. Now that was a pain in the butt.

Every game you play will have beggers, annoying complainers, beggers, pl beggers, and such but you just have to learn to tune it out. I say give it a try; if it doesnt fit you taste then move on. I denied it for months then was told to just be open and try it. I liked it; its fun. Same with some other games. You can read forum post but until you get in there and actually play...even 14 day trial you wont know. Problem is w/ trials you dont get the full sense. Look how long it takes some people to get level 30 in CoH, sometimes you dont even get the good powers till after 20...but w/ a trial you cant (or generally cant) get those levels in that amount of time. You can spend about the 14 1st days just learning everything. Another 14 to finally understand everything.

Best suggestions, make yourself informed. Read write ups, read forums (but take all w/ a grain of salt; even the postive speaking ones), and dont formulate your opinion till you give it a go. Oh and thanks Whym on the compliment on the guides. Just a little help from your neighborhood spidey!

Well it's generally known that just about all the players of one MMORPG hate most of the other MMORPGs :)

But if you're used to the fast pace of City of Heroes/Villains then WoW will only disappoint you, it really takes TOO long to get anywhere before lv40 (your first mount), and even then it's still slow!

On the official site they have a free trial. You can find it here.

As for the rest of the convo, I figure differet strokes for different folks. Some people enjoy a huge world to explore, and some people enjoy getting around quickly. There are some people who look for a bit less complicated of a game, and others who love all the little details.

I figure giving it a try is the only way to really tell if you will like it. And since their official site almosts always has a free trial available, it makes trying WoW a lot easier.

RE: wow

Honestly...I think my biggest problem with WoW wasn't the travel time or any of that...it was the way my character looked. In CoH/CoV, you have SO much ability to customize your character. In WoW, you have a very limited character creation ability as far as looks go. Granted, your equipment can make it look cool and what not...but still.

My reason for trying it a second time was the whole "6 million people can't be totally wrong" mentality...so I tried it...and I thought "it's not that bad"...but then I decided I wanted to play a game that was GOOD, not one that's "not that bad". :)

RE: wow

You can state travel time is bad and such but one thing WoW has that I wish CoH had was replay value of your highest level. You get a 50 in CoH/V what do you get....ummm Hamidon raids (and I dont really consider that a raid) and a kheldian (on CoH). Back to rerolling and for some us (2 years plus) you have tried nearly every build possible.

But in WoW you have options for your character. You can always play up the PvP aspect and earn some really nice gear. You can get in a raid guild and hit the big instances to outfit the gear. Every update comes out with some high level dungeon you havent been to so that means you have more goals to shoot for.

I do miss the the character detailing but eventually it doesnt matter because you can shoot for gear other players dont have then you do look unique. There is the ability to enhance weapons with auras (that add special ability) and make them look cooler. But like eljeni stated to each his own....I said before too....try it and if you dont like then try something else.

RE: wow

I am gonna agree with Grif on this one, give it a fair shake. I spent a few months in WoW, and it is a beautiful and fun game. I did tire of it eventually, but it was well worth my time to explore it. I didn't have to remove CoH to load it, however. Also, if you end up liking it and you want a good guild to run with, check out Calamitously Caffeinated.

RE: wow

I tried the free trial of WoW and lasted one hour. Yes I know that does not seem like enough time to try something. And I admit normally I would probably give it more time. But I encountered all the reasons everyone has stated already plus something nobody has said. I also have the first game in the Guild Wars series. I can totally compare WoW with GW as I have not played a whole lot of that. The big difference for me is for Guild Wars there is no monthly fee. So I can switch between CoX and GW and only be charged for the one and not both games. To me this is a huge reason I dont like WoW. If Iw as not playing CoX I might consider it. But then you have all the reasons people have mentioned that I didnt like. Character look being a huge one. I looked like everyone else. I hate that. I like to feel that I am somewhat unique. Guild Wars is alot like WoW in some ways. But different in others. With it I can play the whole magical mystical game that CoX doesn't give me in that sense. I love Guild Wars for a number of reasons i.e. Music, graphics, choices. But it is not for everyone as WoW is not and CoX is not. Like some have said, if you want to try something new that is great. Choices are the best thing in life to have. But I hope nobody leaves CoX for it. That would be sad.

But of course I'm the better half, LOL...

I have also tried WoW and didn't last long (about an hour), though I really tried for my son's sake. I would rather deal with the travel time I spend in CoH (no where near as much). I can't wait to get my villans to lvl 50 so I can focus more on my Hero.

Lol, Someone linked me that episode on youtube, I think its the only Southpark I liked :p.

WoW has its own flavor...travel time never really bugged me that much, but I always chatted while I ran or cracked open a book or called up someone on the telephone...prepped for dinner...ect.

From 1-60 it was fun for me. For a little while at 60 it was fun. Then it stopped when the only thing you can do to advance is epic four hour+ raids. PvP takes even more time to get anything worthwhile at that point.

Cons:

And epic raids arn't fun. Not only do you have to dedicate yourself to 4 hours on most nights of the week with most raiding guilds, which *will* eventually destroy you, but digging out your brain with a toothpick is more enjoyable.

Raids on that level pretty much reduce you to a number if you perform averagely or better. Warrior 3 went down, call in warrior 4, ect.

Another big turnoff is lack of customization, both in appearance and within a class. You need a certain gear setup to do what you want to do, so thats no help...if you don't look like everyone else in a certain group and tier, that means you're subpar. And any character choices you make can be easily redone for a trivial amount of gold. I actually like the fact that you have to work for it or wait for a respec in CoX, it makes your choices actually meaningful.

And the community is bad. While its true that every community, game and not, has its bad apples, WoW has a disproportinate amount of bad apples to good apples. GW is worse, but not by much.

Also, you totally lose the 'Hero' feel of CoX. WoW has more of a D&D style feel of Peewee vs Teh Mongrel Hordes. If thats a pro or a con to you is more of a personal taste thing though.

Pros:

It's an honest to goodness solid game. If you bring friends with you, or get lucky, the ride from 1-60 can be a ton of fun.

The classes are fairly balanced in general (with some exception, but honestly its closer than CoH). Everyone in your party will find a niche and fill it how they desire, and there's a certain amount of leway, depending on the class, especially early on. (Rogue, Druid tanks, Warrior damage dealers ect.)

The quests tend to be a bit more interesting than you'll find in CoX, and more varied as well.

And they have gear. Thats always fun.
----------

I'd recommend giving it a shot if you're burned out. But the game changes, and you should keep in mind that just because the ride up was fun, the top isn't neccesarily so. And to some extent the opposite is true...my Warrior stopped being second choice to Paladins at 60, which gave her more life for sure. The Pre-epic dungeons at 60 can hold your attention for a while too.

RE: wow

Right now I'm playing both. They are two totally different games. The commerce and high server populations does tend to have a lot of buttheads available to meet in WoW. But there are good peeps on both games. You actualy have to compete for gear and materials. That aspect alone brings out the worst in some. The totally uncontrolable way the enhancements drop in CO? takes that out of the equasion. That is more of an oddity than most MMORPGs.

WoW provides the depth and three dimensional aspects that the "City of X" lacks. It's also a mideval fantasy game as opposed to a modern super person game.

It'll be a cold day in the Molten Core before I drop my City of Heroes account, but I also enjoy the depth of the WoW series. Remember, they are just games, not lifestyle changes/choises.

It's too bad that you cannot still support both games on your PC. Before dropping your COH game, maybe you should look into a larger hard drive. They aren't that expensive any longer. Granted that means loading ALL of it over again. And with all of the patches for both games, that would be a large bit of tedium. If you have room on your hard drive for both games, there is no reason to drop COH either. The WoW downloader is just slow as hell, and there have been so many large patches you will just have to bear with it. If disk space is not your problem, then there is no reason to drop it at all.

For those that tried it for 10 days and decided it wasn't for them. Well, they really didn't give it a fair shake. All that will tell you is a basic set of the very lowest level of attacks and spells. For some, that is enough in all fairness. But after playing both for quite a while now I enjoy each for what they are worth. It's an apples to oranges comparison.

For the longest time I satayed away from WoW simply because I knew that the right mideval fantasy game would suck me in. Once I tried it...... it did.

If you can try it. Do so. Make the evaluation yourself.
