Gonna be a mage any tips

So I am about to start playing wow in a couple days. I already know that I'm going to be an alliance mage (all my real world friends are alliance). Do any of you guys have any useful tips or tidbits of information that i could use to make a good mage that wont be to reliant on others? I would also like to thank you all in advance for the help.

Alright if your going to be soloing alot I would recommend getting very comfortable with moving, moving, and more moving, get comfortable with your frostbolt and your frost nova spells, as they are a solo mage's best friends well them and polymorph. The best way to keep yourself from getting too beat up durring solo play is to frostbolt your enemy then toss a nice heavy dps fire spell or two then frost nova pull back and either blast them to death or wand them. And when facing two enemies you will obviously poly one frostbolt the other firebolt or two frostnova move back and firebolt or wand them till done, rinse and repeat. Remember that no matter what people tell you mages are now and always will be glass cannons.

I don't know a thing about mages besides they can deal kick ass damage and you can always beg them to conjure some food and drinks for you. :P

Thanks you guys. Those builds looked like they will help, but i wont be able to use them until I'm 60. So i was wondering if there were any low lvl builds or if you guys had any tips on where to put my first couple points?

those are meant as a planed out path for your talents to take....as it kinda suchs to respec more than once. I would recommend choosing the one you think looks best based on your particular playstyle, end talents included, and follow it's path.

oooo sure give him the frost and not the Dru approved FIRE!!! I see where the love is....I SEE WHERE YOUR LOYALTY LIES!

You can click on my siggy and see my setup, FIRE ROX!

Fire = Damage, damage, dots, damage, damage FIRE MMMM! GOOOOOOD! O and aggro magnet and death but you will get used to it and learn to control aggro...hopefully.

Ice = Living, crowd control, staying alive

Arcane give a ton of damage now too when you are big enough for the 41 point talents, that is good too.

For soloing I suggest getting a lot of stam and int gear and trying to pick up stam enchants on it when you can afford them. Also use a dagger if you can for quick hitting if you run out of mana.

What Druc said, fire!

If they don't live long enough to get to you, then who cares about yourself staying alive?! Sure a frost bolt slows things down, but I only use that to start out with, then I turn into a portable microwave and start nuking!

Besides, have you seen BigBlueDress?! Best mage inspiring video ever!

Thinkin of starting a mage :) Have a priest now.. going to get his mount soon, ill be 40 tomorrow.. so ill prob be hooked on that first for a while :P

(of course on the gettin the mount thing.. I first need to do stripteases in SW for money.. and me being a male dwarf isnt helping.. even if i was a female one it wouldnt be helpin)

In my honest opinion,as i am also a Mage...sticking to 1-2 types in the talent tree is nearly impossible(for me atleast)mages are to universal to be sticking to just fire for early levels,or ice/arcane.

I've done,
21/30/0 PoM>Pyroblast
31/20/0 AP>PoM>Pyroblast
51/0/0 Slow
0/46/5 Combustion(Imp Frostbolt)
0/0/51 Ice Elemental
0/26/25 Elemental Build
(note,these arent the exact names of the build,just doing it off the top of my mind)

And theirs so much more a mage can do,depending on their playstyle.

Fire:
Fire has the huge DPS frost and arcane lack,but has nearly no spells to prevent them from dying after their nuke(unless enemy is still alive,you have no problem).Also,they have the problem of not being able to slow down, except for Blast Wave,which has a cooldown of 45 seconds,this is when they should take the advantage of Improve Frostbolt,-0.5seconds off may not seem like alot,but after a Pyroblast,follow it up with a rank1 frostbolt,and bam they slowed in 1 second.

All in all,Fire is only for people who like big pretty numbers,and dont mind paying a huge repair bill every once in a while.

Arcane:
The way i use arcane,is only if its partnered up with Ice/Fire in the talent tree.I've used 51/0/0 just for the hell of it,when our guild used to AB/WSG/AV as a guild,and hell,Slow has got to be one of the most amazing skills i've ever used,with it being an instant cast, only con about it is the huge amount of mana it requires(which should be no problem to mage around that level,unless you still have low-stat armor),and only usable on 1 target(but i understand it,can't have 2 spellcasting classes overpowered right? AHEM WARLOCKS!!! =D).

All in all,Arcane i found to be only used with another tree,or full only in parties you know you can trust.

Frost:
Here's My Tree.I'm currently 0/0/51 in the Frost tree,and loving it.Some may say Frost lacks the DPS,but critting for 1500-1600 with TRASH(and i mean trash)armor is amazing for me.And the fact that Ice Barrier has faster CD(talent) is even better.And also using Iceblock when your spammed with debuffs is another plus.I use my mage for an aoe grinder/farmer and it works like a charm.

All in all,Frost is good for dps(depending on talents/armor),but not better then fire,and able to debuff(ice block)/buff(ice barrier) yourself.

You could say i lean towards Frost more,only because i can do multipile things with them,that i couldn't do with ice or arcane.Im probably leaving out huge things on mages that they do good/do bad,but i wanted to finish this as i have to go.Any opinions about this will be taken into consideration,unless its about me being stupid or something.
