| My first post and its about PvP (How to Guide) |

Hi all, I found this site after trying another site and posted this same type of question there only to have it deleted.
Anyway, I've looked around as best I can on this site (also used the search) and can't find what I'm looking for.
I need a basic "How to Guide to PvP". I've played in the arenas, with random groups, a few times to get about 5,000 faction points but did not know what I was doing and I won about as many as I lost.
Many of you started out with no knowledge of PvP like me. I don't want to reinvent the PvP Wheel and would like a great source or guide. At some point everyone that stays with this game progessess (in some areas more than others) and I think I'm at the beginning stages of expanding my experience in the game (I have two lvl 20s).
More specifically I'm looking for some of the following:
1. Non-Guild PvP play basics.
2. Depending on your class, who to go after in battle, when to stay back, etc.
3. Do you use your lvl 20 PvE player and go at with the PvPs?
4. Do you start out small with and under 10 and get blooded?
5. Skills. What's the best way to learn how they work not only singly but in combonation.
6. Is it pointless to go PvP without being in a guild?
That's enough for now. Hoping you folks can help.
Many Thanks,
Menckenite

Welcome to gameamp!
What kind of PvP.... We got arena's, with or without heroes, Alliance battle, Heroes Ascent.
Advantage of a guild: you do not have to go with a PUG (pick up group) that will most likely get owned by a group that has corresponding skills, and knows what the other people do without having to look.... That's called a guild.
I must say, in AB a mesmer can do a very good job without any need for a group-build. So can healer monks.
Check the website from Guildwars themselves, a lot of articles also about pvp. So enjoy.

You want to go indepth? Try find a GvG/PvP guild. They are out there...
Have fun, and GL.

1. Non-Guild PvP play basics.
Some do both like my guild, but their are PvP-only guilds and PvE-only guilds
2. Depending on your class, who to go after in battle, when to stay back, etc.
Warriors go into the battle like Dervish and assasins. The rest stays back depending on their build.
3. Do you use your lvl 20 PvE player and go at with the PvPs?
I do that because i love the PvE aspect of the game, and all my chars are only PvE.
4. Do you start out small with and under 10 and get blooded?
Don't get this question
5. Skills. What's the best way to learn how they work not only singly but in combonation.
Some PvP builds with the usage too, they are all good combinations.
6. Is it pointless to go PvP without being in a guild?
It isn't pointless but you can't do GvG or AB(if you have Factions)

I think I would like that kind of guild

Didn't know if there were any hard & fast rules as to what certain classes should do. e.g. You have a Warrior and a Dervish vs. a Monk and Necro.(I know there are no 2v2 but this is an example.) Who goes after who and why?
3. Do you use your lvl 20 PvE player and go at with the PvPs?

Sorry I wasn't more clear. Under 10 means less than level 10. \"Blooded\" is an English fox hunting term that signifies a right of passage or to get ones feet wet for the first time.
5. Skills. What's the best way to learn how they work not only singly but in combonation.

Thanks for the info.

All I did was read about some builds then made my own and played random arenas and learned what I could fight and what I coudln't. Over time you kinda just learn how everything works.

Welcome to Gameamp, Menckenite!
I find it best to go with guild/alliancemates. It makes for learning with a *LOT* less pressure. It's more fun that way. And you won't get the "professional hardcore" players who talk down and treat you like dirt cause you don't have any fame or rank. Let those go in one ear and out the next. :)
Have fun at it. I, myself, only have 7 points of fame (no rank), but got it while going with guildmates. And we had fun! It's what it's all about. And I am really into PvP.
Again, Welcome.

To learn more, get a nice guild that is friendly. Most of those guilds teach you how to do that stuff and the techniques. But you just can't rush into it. Learning how to PvP takes time. Most of PvP is teamwork and that takes time too. For the caster classes(mesmer, ele, monk) stay in the backline and cast away. For rangers it depends if you are a thumper in which you hit people with a hammer, or if you use ranged attacks. For warriors, assassins, and dervishes go upfront and in their face. For paragons try and stay back because spears are ranged and you have no business getting beat up in the frontline. Casters stay back since they have the weakest armor and melee'rs do a lot more damage on them. Just try and take your time and sooner or later it starts to develop in you. I haven't known one good PvP player that just became really good the first time they tried PvP. Just mess around with builds, put skills you think will work well together. Then you will start to get better at making builds and playing different classes. As for PvP characters, they're nice since I have one slot with a PvP character in it because they have all the skills you unlocked in PvE and with your faction on them. Just switch classes and stuff and it makes it A LOT easier. Hope this Helps!

1. Non-Guild PvP play basics.
-Random Arenas: A place to test out random builds, builds you have seen, etc... a nice place to have fun and go for the Gladiator Title (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Gladiator)
-Team Arenas: Once you start getting the hang of Random arenas, move onto here with friends/random people. Generally, the team builds are created before entry rather than the 4 random players in randoms. Along with RA, you can go for the Gladiator Title here.
-Heroe's Ascent: This is one of the first places I started my PvP. In HA, there are many builds and players of various skill that attempt to earn Fame to reach higher ranks of their Hero Title (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Hero_%28Title%29). Games won in the "Hall of Heroes" are those that make it to the last map (which is repeated until loss)and compete for Favor of the Gods (which is used to get into FoW, Uw).
-Hero Battles: Although I haven't done much here, as far as I can tell... it's just a place to play around with your heroes and learn how to use them more effectively while going for the Commander title (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Commander).
2. Depending on your class, who to go after in battle, when to stay back, etc.
-There really is no definitive answer to this. A general rule for most classes is that a Warrior and Dervish are "frontline" characters meaning they are in the front. Assassins will be popping in and out of this category or, in GvG, often seperate from the group. Casters such as Elementalists, Mesmers, Necros, etc. are called "midline" casters -> as the name says, they stay in the middle, closer to the back... although they can go up if needed to hit an enemy monk or something further back. Monks should always be towrads the back as to not be caught in all the action. As a Flag runner, whatever profession, if the fight is at or near the flag stand, let the monks know you are coming as the other team will quite possibly go for you. If you are a "soft" target (casters), be away from the opposing melee classes.
3. Do you use your lvl 20 PvE player and go at with the PvPs?
-I personally use them if I feel my PvE character is equipped to its fullest extent - runes, armor, weapons, etc. It's really just based on how much your characters have - if it's sufficient for pvp (i.e. no missing insignias, etc.).
4. Do you start out small with and under 10 and get blooded?
-Still a bit confused with this but assuming you mean start small, work towards big?... Yes, I guess.
5. Skills. What's the best way to learn how they work not only singly but in combonation.
-I would definately say hit "B" while in-game to observe games of both GvG and HA (Guild versus Guild and Heroe's Ascent). If you see games with high ranked/rated guilds, you will USUALLY see proper placement of characters (which is actually often random in HA) - as in feild positioning. It's also a good place to see the common builds people are using to know what builds you could possibly encounter. IMO this is definately the first place to start for anyone new to the PvP aspect - it's also where I started :)
6. Is it pointless to go PvP without being in a guild?
-There is a lot you can do without a guild. Most of my HA experience has been through friends (I am up to about 1k fame away from rank9 ~2660 fame or so)... A guild is really only NECESSARY if you would like to GvG (which can be done without one, but it's always better to be part of a guild so you can work together over time). HA, RA, TA, etc. are absolutely fine without a guild, but can always be more fun when you are with friends or guildies.
If you have any questions, just let me know... not sure how much sense all of this made, but I tried :) Feel free to message me on here/in game if you have any questions.
