Making a character of the opposite sex?

I was just curious about how many people make and play a character of the opposite sex? Do you enjoy it for the constant eye candy? Or do you like it for the concept that you use for that character? Do you play differently then you would with a character that is the same sex as you? When a member of the opposite sex flirts with you in game, do you tell them you are not what gender they think?

I am bored at work and was thinking about this. Humor me LMAO.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

I have 2 female heroes and the rest of mine are men.

One I created to join the Lethal Ladies Supergroup on Pinnicle - Swiss Miss - Engry/Energy Blaster.

Second, was for Ampy's Angels supergroup from the Gameamp website group - Center of Gravity - Garvity/Kinetics Controller.

Apparently, I didn't make mine that hot, because no one has tried to hit on them. Which I don't see why they would anyway...

But, to answer you question mine were made for the specific reason of joining a particular Supergroup.

Swiss

Now to humor you...

Normally I do not cuss, but this joke is my exception:

There were 2 young boys up in their room one morning before school and the 9 year old says to the 7 year old, "Hey, I have a great idea. When we go down for breakfast this morning let's cuss."

The 7 year old thinks it a great idea.

The 9 year old says, "I'll say hell... and you say ass."

"Ok... ha ha ha. This will be great."

They go down for breakfast and sit at the table waiting. Their Mom turns to the 9 year and asks, "Tommy, what do you want for breakfast this morning?"

The 9 year old thinks for a moment then says "Well hell, I'll just have some Cheerio's"

The Mom quickly slaps him across the cheek and he falls backwards off his chair. His is on the floor holding his cheek when she calms herself and ask the 7 year old, "And what do you want for breakfast?"

The 7 year old's eyes are huge and he says, "You can bet your sweet ass it won't be Cheerio's..."

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

I've made several characters of the female gender. Usually, kinda like what Swiss said, it's just for concept reasons. But then again, most of my characters are just for concept reasons. I think I only have two characters that were not created with some concept in mind, RonJ73, my L40 Brute on villains, which I created with my screenname for the purposes of the "Newsie Grind Experiment" and RonJ, a Scrapper on heroes which is kind of a Scanner Experiment. So that's about it.

Lastly, I don't think I've ever been "flirted with" ingame...if I have, I didn't notice.

City of Heroes/Villains
Onion - L50 - Katana/Super Reflexes/Body Mastery Scrapper
Scotch Bonnet Girl - L50 - Fire Aura/Fire Melee/Pyre Mastery Tanker
Aurora Australis - L41 - Willpower/Energy Melee Tanker

Primarily all my heroes are female. I have made a few males and end up deleting them, for a reason that is a little embarrassing. I hate to watch them run!
I have been flirted with from time to time even asked once if I wanted to in game date. That was freaky and also a while ago. I play more evenings now and never run into that at that time.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

i have an angel of ampy's and one other femaletoon that i play. i originally had her as a stalker, but changed her to a fire tank. she's the only female toon i have had to make it past 10 so far. usually i either dont like the toon, powers, costume or something else and cant get into the character, which is a big thing for me.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

No... I don't like playing a character that is of the opposite sex. I don't know why, it's just a weird thing about me. I'm a guy, so my character will represent what I am... a guy. The only female character that I will play is Samus from Metroid.

And about the flirting... By my avatar you guys can see I am a big, fat, hairy loser. If you look very closely between my eyes brows you'll see my L firmly scarred into my forehead. Yes I have flirted with female characters in the game, and yes I have been told that they were guys playing female characters. But every so often, you'll get lucky and run into actual ladies. Anyways, yeah I'm a loser and have flirted in the game. Hell I even "flirted" with Big's character... well all I said was 'Big, for a guy you got a great pair of ***s'

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

I play characters of both sexes. Mainly for costume concept. Doesn't make any diffrence to me.

Though, and I know this is so stereotypical, but do you ever notice that guys -- in general -- tend to make their female toons extremely attractive (read: huge boobs, skimpy clothes) and females that make male toons -- again in general -- either huge or armored to the max or just really straight -- suits & such.

Just an observation -- my male characters are the one with armor & robotic arms/legs or sized huge (wish they had huge sized women -- I have a concept for that). The only exception being my Kheldian.

Or maybe it's just my perceptions

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

I guess I should respond to this thread since most of my toons are female, though I myself am male.

Back when I played a lot of FPS' I always had a female avatar because they are smaller and therefore harder to hit. So I'm in the habit of it. Also, in CoX females have more and better costume options. The "eye candy" factor is fairly low in my equation. A lot of my toons are concept based and when I the idea pops into my head, most of them are female.

Path of Wrath - Storm/Elec/Elec Defender - 50
Miss Trinidad - Ill/Storm/Ice Controller - 50
Miss Cote d'Ivoire - Dark/Regen/Dark Scrapper - 50
Posey Punk - Grav/Kin/Stone Controller - 50
Mr. Azerbaijan - Kin/Psy Defender - 40
Laccolith - Earth/Rad Controller - 30
Geriatric Justice - Willpower/SS Tanker - 21

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

i agree with path about the costumes. although, frescana, my fire/energy tank, has a skirt and somewhat skimpy top, i made her like that cause i think it's a nice costume. there are so many more options available i don't want to use a lot of fabric cause i normally do.

also, i've heard people say that they enjoy watching female toons from behind better than male toons, but i honestly hardly look at my toon during battle. i'm too heavily involved in combat to worry about if my butt looks good in tight.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

Sure ya do, Big. Sure ya do.

I'm about 50/50 on femme toons to men toons. And I make 'em HAWT! No subterfuge here. If I'm gonna spend 5 hours looking at an a$$ in tight spandex; it's gonna be one I like looking at. Of course, concept and incongruity come into play also, AND HUMOR! Dont forget the funny. Nothing is as incongruous in most men's eyes as a chick really bustin' some heads.

Also though I dont really like RP in the game (go figure), I love having a funny chick-toon, and playing her with all the off-beat sayings that I can come up with. I always get a laugh. My first, Sapir on Guardian did get hit on quite a bit in the beginning, and for a while I just let it sit like that. No flirting back, just a 'thank you' when someone complimented me, or something. I finally broke down and told my friends in the game after a while, and I came fully 'out of the closet' (so to speak) with my male Villain when CoV came out (that's him in the Avatar BTW).

To be honest, I have more fun playing my femmes because of the humor aspect. And everyone should know by now that men make the best looking chick-toons. If it's hot then femme it's not. If you find an ugly or plain chick-toon, it is usually a real girl behind the keyboard. I dont know why this is so, but it is. I have empirical evidence. At least my wife let's me help her make her toons.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

ok most of my characters are female, the main reason being that male ones look TERRIBLE in the costume options. also for concepts, but mostly cuz they look like @$$ in almost any costume...no offense to anyone. they should have size slider for butts! the male butt is soooo bg on that game.

and this one time on guild wars, someone sent me a pm asking if i liked...certain sexual acts...and i was like, hold on a sec, i minimized the game and sent an email to the devs and i think he had his account taken away.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

I have tried to make a female character just to shake things up but it didnt last. Got on to 20...deleted...was for S.H.E. SG..(Stiletto Heeled Enforcers). My 2nd heroine never got pass 10. I may have one currently but dont play her.

But I favor my gender 95% more....not sure really what it is but I just cant get into playing a female character. Maybe its my belief women are vastly insuperior to the male counterpart. Or the lack of intelligence in general.

OK I AM KIDDING DONT PM ME OR COMPLAIN! I AM JOKING!

Maybe I make male heroes more because I want to think of myself as that hero. Whats the point of an RPG if you dont imagine your self as them. But I do agree the females look better in some of the costume options and you can do some really cool designs. Imagine DF's heroine in the metal skull as a male. It wouldnt be as cool. I feel like at times you can do more with the costume options on the female side thus allowing you to be a tad more creative.

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

I'm a guy and I make about 60% of my toons female.

I love to make character concepts that only work with one gender like a wooden indian or transvestite or a teeny tiny girl tank.

Everyone of my characters has to have a concept or I can't play them, that said I usually abandon them after reaching 20 and move on to the next character concept.

I get hit on some in game, but I usually ignore it unless it directly relates to my character. One example would be when I let my sister create the costume and he looked like Joey Tribbiani from Friends. So I turned the character into a super fan/tribute hero that went around flirting with anything that moved.

That's EXACTLY why I also don't a female character. Women are inferior to men. We are faster, stronger, BETTER at things then them. They are only around to clean our houses and make our babies.

um, interesting sentiment, but I wanted to throw in the fact that it would be better than they, because the word omitted in colloquial speech would be are, as in, than they are.

/Disagree. I turn the breast slider all the way down on almost all my characters.

I guess I'm an exception. I'm a guy (as most of you know), yet my avatars, desktop wallpapers, and every CoH Hero and Villain I play regularly is female.

When I make my characters in game, I put a lot of thought into their story, what they should look like, and what they will wear. You might have noticed that I have three regular characters in my comic and they're all women too :)

Because of my dressing? skills, I have been complimented (and more) by other players (Red Scout gave Jordan a heck of a time in RV one time :D )

On that note, it's usually something like "Wow, that's hot!" to which I just say "thanks! I like this costume too". Anything worse than that gets my ignore list (which hasn't happened yet thankfully).

RE: Making a character of the opposite sex?

Hey thanks everyone for responding to this thread. It has been something that really was an interesting question to me. I guess I just have not thought up a really good concept for a female toon yet. I see some female characters that are really cool and creative. I guess I just dont want to make some generic female toon that looks like everyone else. I like all my characters to be unique in some way as I am sure everyone does. I try not to even make my characters look like any comic characters in design or background story.

One little story I smile at is that I had this male toon that I made. Didnt think anything about making him look attractive to the females or anything. But damn if I didnt not get hit on an flirted with by so many females. It was an eye opener. Up till that point I had not had anything like that from the females I play with. Incedently I ended up deleting him because I hated his powers and concept. I hope to many women werent sad LOL.

Lol! I guess I really am the exception. To be honest, I just assumed that all the female characters in the game were actually men. It surprised me greatly to find out that there's actually a fairly large female player base in CoH.
