Apparently it's coming out in the U.S. this coming Tuesday (hadn't heard anything about it until tonight). From the trailers it looks like it might be a few notches above the usually- disappointing animation quality from Marvel.

Yeah it sucks that its animated but maybe, just maybe that it will open the door to a live action movie. Wait... I thought there WAS gonna be a live action movie with oh shoot what the hell was his name............ It's on the tip of my tongue... come on IMDB you're going too slow... come on! Robert Downey Jr. Gotta love IMDB.com

What exactly were you expecting out of a Straight-To-Video release? As promising as the Favreau movie sounds, it's not slated for release for another year. My guess is that Marvel made this STV version to start stoking the fires for the upcoming big-budget movie, but whether it was live-action or animated this "teaser" STV release was always going to be low-budget - would you have preferred it be a low-budget live action video? Personally I'm much happier they went with animation that at least looks halfway decent rather than trying to pass off a pathetic live-action cheapy. Anyone rememeber Albert Pyun's* Captain America or Roger Corman's Fantastic Four?
*I'm actually a fan of Pyun as a b-movie director, but I'm still trying to forget his Cap movie.

The two Ultimate Avengers flicks, which I assume were Straight To Video releases, were pretty darned good, IMO. I'm assuming that the Iron Man video is just a spin off from them. I was impressed enough with the animation and the characters were done well for what they were. (Non-canon, of course, as would be expected...)

Well...It could be great advertising in preparation for the live action flick, but the deal to make the STV movies has been alive for a while. They've got plans for a few more. I haven't been disappointed.

Marvel is in fact making another STV release of the animated kind in August and if you buy or rent the Iron-Man DVD there is a preview of this upcoming film. What is it you ask? Why none other than the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Dr.Strange! I watched the opening sequence of Doc Strange in the extras section of ol' Shellheads' DVD last night, looks to be pretty good. As for the Iron-Man film, I will not spoil it for those who may not have seen it yet, suffice it to say it's at least on par with the Avengers releases, with some better animation quality.
