| Several question from a Newbie |
|
|
|
Hi All,
I have a few questions to ask, to help be decide if I want to get into this game. Sorry, I know these have probably been asked a bazillion times, by every other newb that has logged on. :-)
1. I'm playing WoW with a 1 week trial account right now, and it's okay, but not nearly as in-depth as I had hoped for. In GW, is it all hack and slash and then loot, or it there more to it than that?
2. I don't always want to play with a group of people, can some of the parts be played by myself?
3. Do I need an account someplace, and if so, how much $ is it per month?
4. I've seen some screen shots of the game, but I can't tell if they are from game play or if they are from a cut scene. How are the graphics in the game? They look similar to Oblivion, from what I've seen.
I just don't want to be disappointed with another game like Everquest, that looks like it was made for children and was so boring that I only lasted a day with it. (after the 5 hours of patching that took place). :-( I need a game with substance and challenge.
Thanks in advance for any help.

its basically "hack and slash then loot" but nowhere near as much as WoW imo
yes, you can add NPC's to ur party if you cant find a group or dont want to - they can be more powerful than most if used correctly but most of the time they aren't - however, they're enough for the job :)
yes, you need to buy the game to get ur account but after that there's no monthly fees - buy the game and u can play as long as u want
yup they look pretty similar to oblivion
imo i think it's more of a "challenge" then EQ and i hope u get into it :)

1) Yup, lvl20 is your max, not the monsters'.....
2) almost everything is "henchable". So you can form a Pickup Group (pug) or go at it alone or with henchies. 8 is the max...
3) You buy a chapter, and play it unlimited. No monthly fees
4) The graphics look the same as the screen shots placed on the forum. Though touch and feel depends on the chapter
5) Probably someone around here has a 10-day trial key. I have not used mine yet, so I can give it to you.
Regards,
Michiel, and welcome to Gameamp

It's not nearly as much grind as WoW is, Guild Wars is more skill-based than time-based. The level cap is at 20, which means that in order to do well in PvP or PvE, you have to learn strategy, rather than uber-leet skills.
2. I don't always want to play with a group of people, can some of the parts be played by myself?
Yes, in all 3 campaigns, you can have henchies, which are prebuilt npcs who group with you. In Nightfall, you can have Heroes, who are like henchies except they are fully customizable by you.
3. Do I need an account someplace, and if so, how much $ is it per month?
Just buy the game and you can begin playing. No need to sign up anywhere else unless you buy it online. GW is pay-per-campaign, which means once you pay for the game, it's free until you decide to pay for another campaign, which you don't have to do.
4. I've seen some screen shots of the game, but I can't tell if they are from game play or if they are from a cut scene. How are the graphics in the game? They look similar to Oblivion, from what I've seen.
The level of graphics is MUCH higher than WoW, that's for sure. But it's not as detailed as Oblivion. But you won't really be disappointed, as there are tons of beautiful scenery in the game.

GW is much more than hack'n'slash...you have to put a lot of thought into builds and tactics because of the imposed level 20 limit.
| QUOTE | | 2. I don't always want to play with a group of people, can some of the parts be played by myself? |
If you have Nightfall, there is the hero system, which are customisable henchmen. They have their pros and cons...

Nothing....no monthly fees...ever...

It's the same....obviously better graphics card = better graphics...

No WoW cartoony stuff here....GW is a superb game with PvE and PvP to suit your needs. It also has decent storylines. Ask someone for a buddy key and try it yourself for 10 hours (or however long it goes on for). You can download the game from the website www.guildwars.com
Give it a go, and I hope you enjoy it!

Welcome to GameAMP! Hope you get hooked in GW like we all have!
I will answer your questions below.
1. I'm playing WoW with a 1 week trial account right now, and it's okay, but not nearly as in-depth as I had hoped for. In GW, is it all hack and slash and then loot, or it there more to it than that? I'm not terribly familiar with WoW - there is a bit of hack/slash and loot, but with advanced coop missions and other coop stuff, it's a great way to do more than that!
2. I don't always want to play with a group of people, can some of the parts be played by myself? In Guild Wars: Nightfall, the ability to play by yourself is always there, in my opinion. You can pretty much beat the game using henchmen and your heroes. So YES to your question.
3. Do I need an account someplace, and if so, how much $ is it per month? No, Guild Wars does not require a monthly payment - you buy the game and play it!
4. I've seen some screen shots of the game, but I can't tell if they are from game play or if they are from a cut scene. How are the graphics in the game? They look similar to Oblivion, from what I've seen. The game is quite nice looking. In fact, I find the environment to be quite immersive (if that's a word). And the \"cartoon\" aspect of WoW and Everquest is not present. Overall a great looking game!
Hopefully we'll see you in-game. If you need help at any point, hit me up. My in-game name is "The Beano."

Not all hack and slash, their is a great story in Guild Wars. You need Hack and Slash for a game like Guild Wars.
2. I don't always want to play with a group of people, can some of the parts be played by myself?
Their are Henchman in every outposts so you can play with them.
3. Do I need an account someplace, and if so, how much $ is it per month?
You buy the Game in the store and no need for monthly paying
4. I've seen some screen shots of the game, but I can't tell if they are from game play or if they are from a cut scene. How are the graphics in the game? They look similar to Oblivion, from what I've seen.
The cutsences are mostly as the gameplay, so post a screen

Thanks everyone for the help. I got a trial key from another user and set everything up last night.
Very cool game and worlds better than WoW. :-)
I ended up creating a Ranger and made it to lvl 3, almost 4, before I logged off. I haven't picked a second profession yet, but probably will today. The only thing about the character is that he looks very feminine, no matter what I tried to do to change his look. I think it's the "granny" boots that he is wearing. He looks more like a "Rump" ranger than a regular ranger. (My wife's words, not mine). :-)
I'll definitely be getting the full game, probably tonight or tomorrow.
His name is Lochnar Monterey (a throwback to one of the my favorite characters from my D&D days), so if anyone sees me logged in feel free to say "Hi".

Mwahahahahahahaha... fresh meat!
Welcome to Guild Wars! Glad to hear that you like it!
Don't worry about your rangers looks... later in the game you'll be able to buy new armour... hopefully that will solve the "Rumpy" problem. If you're ever in need, hit me up!

cool, glad to hear ur enjoying GW ^^
if u need any help just shout most likely ill shout hi to u sometime :)
anyways if you are buying it but are still unsure i would suggest buying Guild Wars (the original - Prophecies), since that seems to be the cheapest because of its age. I also feel that its learning curve is pretty nice for new players. However, if you are sure you like GW, maybe try buying GW: Nightfall as that seems to be most "popular" nowadays, as it's so new (well not that much anymore but still alot of players there doing missions to get all chars through NF)

Welcome to Gameamp. I hope you enjoy the game, and if you stay active on this site and ask questions, we'll help you out whenever you need it.
When you do get the game, I'd highly recommend joining a guild right off. The guild aspect of this game is the absolute best part, in my opinion. It's what keeps the veterans coming back, even if they are super bored with the game, they want to do stuff with their friends in the guild. Plus, as a newb (no offense meant) you will be wanting to ask a lot of questions, and your guild members will be very helpful with that.

before anything starts......newb means newbie, someone new to the game, it does NOT mean noob, which is rather insulting and implies that s/he is bad at the game.
that was just incase.....though i doubt anything would happen considering the title should imply that he knows what it means xD

I was just pricing the original game online and most places are around $49, but then I checked out Best Buy and they have it for $29, so I guess I'm off to BB on my way home from work. :-)
I like to play games in the order that they came out, they seem to flow a bit better that way.
I tried looking at the GW store that is linked to the main page, but all I got was a press release.

Okay, so now that I've played a bit more, I have a couple of more questions. I'll probably have plenty more. :-)
1. I went into town and tried to hire a hanchman, but can't make sense of the different colors above the characters. Does a henchman have a certain color text over them? I thought I was hiring one and it ended up being a real person who wondered around with me as I explored and got my bearings a bit. I felt bad when I realized it was a real person and I her that I was just wondering around. :-)
2. I check out some of the maps and wonder, what the heck does Pre-Searing mean?
I settled on a secondary profession of Elementalist. I figure rangers are outdoor types and so are elementalist, so they might go together well. I even got a cool cat as one of the elary ranger quests. :-)

Ahhh... it's so nice to see someone enjoying the game so much.
To answer your first question. When in a town or outpost, actual players (other people online in that town) are in either light blue (not part of a group) or darker blue (part of a group). Your henchmen will appear in Green (text) and are usually located by a big double banner.
As for the Pre-searing thing, I am going to leave that unanswered. I don't want to spoil anything for you. Sorry.
Keep at it!

Well Pre-Searing is where you are now. :D (All I can say)
As for your secondary proffesion, remember that each proffesion has a different energy pool.
Elementalists cast alot of spells and have a MASSIVE energy pool where as rangers tend to just attack.
So Being a Ranger/Elementalist casting alot of spells will end up being a rather bad combanation later on in the game.
(Rangers have "Expertise" which lowers the energy cost of ATTACKS and SKILLS, not SPELLS. :D)
If you need any help you can post here on Game Amp or check out the non-official Guild Wars Encyclopedia kinda thing.

1) No henchmen in Pre-searing, they go up if you make progress in the game
2) Pre-Searing is before the SPOILERSearingSPOILER
The real game starts in Post searing

Pre-searing is beautiful, I sometimes ponder on the idea of making a new character in Prophecies just to go revisit. Take your time there, enjoy it! Wait until your around lvl 8 before taking the plunge into the next part (the NPC will tell you you can't return so take that as a hint not to move on until your ready).
What follows isnt as 'pretty' and isn't meant to be, it did put me off playing the game when I first left Pre' , don't let it though, there are many awe inspiring things to see and do that come later :).
Edit: Forgot to say, don't worry if you think you made the wrong choice on secondary profession you will be able to change it later in the game.

I've been playing for a few days now and love the game!!!
Everytime I log on, I end up with more questions to ask you guys. :-)
1. Do your henchmen ever change, or are the 4 that I get now the only ones for the entire game?
2. Do the henchies ever permanently level up? They level while I'm out of the cities/outposts, but as soon as I enter the city, they revert back to level 3.
4. Is there a way to tell the henchies what skills to take out on patrol with me?
5. How do you customize the look of your character? I see some that are really wild looking and are only like 10th or 12th level. I saw one last night that looked like a bunch of candy corn stacked up walking around. :-)
I see what someone replied to me about, as far as using Elementalist as a secondary profession, it uses a lot of energy, but I don't have a huge pool to draw from. I am using more of the Ranger skills now and my pet is becoming more and more important to me. I'm just at the point where I am looking for the Flame Temple(?), the place where I have to take the ashes of the little girl. That mission is a real PITA using only henchmen. :-)
I just formed my own guild last night, just to check out and see how that works. The name is "Halls of Bytor", since I'm a huge Rush fan. :-) I've got one new member as of this morning. I was in another guild, but there was never anybody around and I didn't see any action with them, so I left.
Well, I better run, I'm sure that I'l have lots more questions later on. :-)

Welcome back! Nice to see that you're enjoying things and progressing through the game.
Here are my answers to your questions (italics):
1. Do your henchmen ever change, or are the 4 that I get now the only ones for the entire game? The henchmen do change somewhat throughout the game. You'll be introduced to new ones and the core ones will remain.
2. Do the henchies ever permanently level up? They level while I'm out of the cities/outposts, but as soon as I enter the city, they revert back to level 3.Their levels are based on the outpost/city you are in. In Ascalon, they are level three, but the time you get further on in the game, they will be level 6, 10, 12, 16 and ultimately level 20.
4. Is there a way to tell the henchies what skills to take out on patrol with me?Unfortunately, no. The henchmen come with predetermined skills. This will give you a better idea of what they're all about - NOTE THERE MAY BE SPOILER STUFF IN HERE, SO PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!! Henchmen on GuildWiki
5. How do you customize the look of your character? I see some that are really wild looking and are only like 10th or 12th level. I saw one last night that looked like a bunch of candy corn stacked up walking around. :-) The bulk of the customizing is done when you make your character (face, hair, height, etc.). Throughout the game you can buy different armour, which will change their look... and dye it if you like. The Candy Corn you are referring to comes from a tonic obtained during the halloween event this year. Hit me up in-game and I'll give you one to try out (The Beano).
A Rush fan eh? You're not Canadian are you?
Anyway, I hope this answers your questions. Good luck!
EDIT: WOOT for not closing tags!

There are more and different henchman later in the game

The level of henchies is determined by the outpost you start from. If you have level 6 henchman and enter a town with level 3 henchman those you have with you will drop levels.
4. Is there a way to tell the henchies what skills to take out on patrol with me?
No, only in Guildwars Nightfall can you have heroes, you can choose their skills and equipment.

Buy new armour from the crafters in selected cities and outposts. Dyeing the armour can also change the appearence.
Edgwalkers is coming.

1. The 4 you get now will stay available, but as you get further in the game, you will be able to pick more henchmen.
2. It all depends on the city/outpost where you are. In Ascalon City the henchmen are lvl 3, but in Lion's Arch they are lvl 12 (if I remember correctly :P)
4. No, there is not. However, when you get Nightfall, it will be possible to get Hero's, and you can choose their skills an attributes.
5. You can buy Armor from several armor crafters in big city's, and dye them the color you like. There are quite a lot of armors you can choose, take a look in the armor section on this site :)
And the candy corn things are a special tonic you could get during the halloween event.
:)
Edit: crap, I type way to slow (in English, that is xD)

LOL. If English is not your native tongue, then I'd say you type quite fast indeed. Your English is quite good!

Wow it is nice to see someone with the same questions I had when i first started playing. I was in pre-sear until lvl 10 since it was so "comfortable" and moving on was kinda scary. Then seeing all the lvl 20 guys and different armors, ooooh.
Anyways, my bit of advice is dont get caught up in the "running droks" and rushing through the game. Enjoy it, do side quests and play in the correct order for your first character. Itll make the game much more enjoyable. I give the same advice to guildies new to the game and begging for runs, some dont appreciate the truth, haha.
Anyways, welcome to GW, its ruined my sleeping schedule for over a year and a half now. Have fun.
