New system

I'm looking to build a new system for myself in the near future, and I'd appreciate some assistance picking hardware. No better people to ask than gamers for this sort of thing.

I'm looking to build the whole thing, from the motherboard up...so I'll just outline the basics of what I'm looking for and if you guys can point me at some products (links always helpful), that'd be great.

I love ASUS for a mobo maker, been using them for years in many previous systems...so I'd like to stick with them, unless someone has some compelling aguments otherwise. I need the mobo to support up to 4G of RAM and a SLI video config...I won't start using this much, but I want it to be there when the time comes. It would be nice to find one that will support dual core, but will work with just one...I'm all about upgradability, so I can manage a budget.
Naturally, I'd need to know which processors fit, and mobo/proc combos are what I'll be looking at most. This is where most of my budget right now will be going as I feel the mobo is the most important part of the computer...I'll pay for quality.

I've used NVidia cards for years, and I'd like to stick with them. I have my eye on the 8800 down the road...but for now, I need to stay in the $100 - $150 price range and will be going with a 7xxx of some kind or equivalent (PCI-e, of course).

I'm wide open for sound card suggestions. I've used onboards for so long, I don't feel I know enough about what's available. I don't need anything uber fancy, but I do want something that's solid quality. I'm not looking to spend too much here, just want to get away from onboard sound and take some burden off the CPU.

Let's hear what you guys have got to say, and thanks in advance for the help.
