Just today I saw a Ranger Trapper using this awesome staff.
It had these green/yellow "stars" following it and they created a rather large trail.
Kinda like holding some special staff in a mission, it has these really long trails that follow it around.
I couldn't get a screen but would really like to know what staff it was.

maybe it was a zodiac staff or a celestial staff?

That would be the Arcane Staff. Core staff added with Nightfall. Very cool effect.

I second that statement, It's an arcane staff, my ranger uses it as well. You can one with empty inscription slot for your pve chars @ Camp Hojaru (spelling)

Personally I think it would be a Zodiac Staff but I've never seen an Arcane Staff. Does it have some sort of Effect?

The three 'heads' on the staff have an animated fire within them. When you move, the fire doesn't, though it is constantly refreshed within the centre of the heads.
That said, it leaves a little trail of the small fires as you move around.
