I was thinking about rolling a Storm/Electric defender, and wanted to know if any seasoned Defender vets had any input for me. I have virtually no experience with defenders, fo any input at all would be much appreciated.

Here's my advice: take every power in the storm set. Really. They are all useful if you work with them correctly, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The worst that will happen is that you decide you don't like something and respec out of it.
Here's something you won't hear many people say: O2 Burst shouldn't really be in this set. Yes, it is helpful. Yes, I have it on Mr. Uganda. But it draws away from what the set is really about: control through organized chaos. And the problem here is that you can use all of your other powers to PREVENT damage from happening, but most players want you to lean on O2 Burst because it is a heal. And that makes you a less effective Storm defender.
Storm is a harsh mistress. You will screw things up in some battles while you are learning, but don't worry about it. By the time you are done you will love it.
And here is a good combo using 2 powers that most non-stormies hate from this set (Gale and Tornado). If you have an indoor mish with a nearby corner to work with, here is what you do:
1. Toggle on Hurricane.
2. Start pushing your mob to the corner. It takes some getting used to when you are trying to wrangle a mob like this, but keep at it. Use Gale to help push them along.
3. Once you have them in the corner, unleash Tornado. Tornado tends to be a wild power with a mind of it's own, and many people are afraid of it because it has a tendancy to scatter mobs. Here's the secret: if they are all gathered in the corner with nothing nearby walking around, Tornado will stay in the corner, and toss people straight up and down. This RULES with Paragon Protectors. No feet = no MoG.
4. Drop Freezing Rain, and put up Lightning Storm. Fire at will from your secondary until everything is toast.
Either way, make sure you check it all out. If you have any questions, let me know.

I know you are looking for a seasoned Defender Crookwood, but the best I can offer is a Blaster that just keeps trying this set.
I think my third incarnation will be the keeper.
A lot of people get really frustrated with storm summoners of either variety. I myself love Hurricane and Freezing Rain. Your hard core "Clump em tight" Tankers and Scrappers will be quite a bit frustrated with you until you learn how to use Hurricane properly. I'm still learning it's uses, but I have a standard running crew that will be patient with me. Be ready to hear a bit of criticism as you learn.
I've found that the right team, and right circumstances make the difference with this set.
AR and Energy Blasters, Illusion Trollers and any other team that likes to use knockback, and mob scattering techniques to reduce incoming DPS will be the most agreeable.
For the non KB or scatter teams, learning to stay back with hurricane as protection for the squishies is a good tactic. Having dealt with Storm Summoners more than playing with them, I have always liked them. I'm very happy sitting in that hurricane with them as I blast away. Storm Defenders are very good for Blasters.
Using the hurricane requires some thinking too if you are going to directly use it to bottle stuff up. Caves, warehouses with good tight hallways and sewer missions are great. Open areas, not so much.
And just remember, you aren't a Blaster. It's hard for me to keep that straight because of my playstyle. But as long as I run assist through the Scrapper or other Blasters on the team, I can also O2 Boost them real east too. It's alweays fun when I play it and don;t have a Stormie hater on the team.

As someone who has played Stormies with about every secondary possible, you are in for hard learning no matter what secondary you take. If you were someone who hadn't played the game before, I would say stay away from this set until you understand the game better, but I think you will do just fine. Understand that mistakes are going to happen when learning this set, and it is one of the roughest defender sets there is to learn.
While I might not agree with Nak about some things when it comes to Stormies, he is right in that you should get every power in the set. Take them all, and learn different ways they can be used effectively. I personally think O2 Boost belongs in the set simply because there are times when you can't always mitigate the damage with the other powers. If you need any help, let me know. I'll help you however I can.

I do have O2, and I do use it quite a bit. I am not saying the power isn't worthwhile, at times you will be happy as heck that you have it. Some missions leave me no choice but to lean on it. I just don't think it goes well with the theme of what the rest of the set does, and alot of players you come across will only care about that power, because it is a heal.
And by the way... I'm a dude. :D

Sorry, Nak, I knew that. I'm a little tired from work is all. I know how you feel about teams leaning on it and wanting you to use it all the time. It's one of my biggest peeves when it comes to peoples idea of what a defender should and shouldn't be. It does fit with the set somewhat though I think it was more of a weak attempt at throwing a heal into the set.

Just a quick update, I rolled him about 2 days ago. Led Kashmire (:D I loves me some Zed Leppelin!) is a lvl 5 Storm/Dark controller with Gale, 02 Boost, Dark Blast, and Gloom, and I plan to get Snow Storm at 6. Thanks so much for all the advice, Nak, Knack (hehehe), and Thunder.

ok, I've only been on CoH for 3 weeks now & my highest toon is a lvl 20 Storm/Elec Def & I really enjoy it... I agree with several ppl above @ taking O2... yes, it sucks as a fullon heal... but in a pinch, anything werks... plus you can also help out the main heal at times by waking up toons that have been put to sleep... snowstorm & freezing rain are a particularly nasty 2-punch. Then either use your charged bolts or whatever to help pick things off... I prefer to drop the ss&fr combo as I'm charging in behind the lead tank... then drop a short circuit and fly out, firing bolts as soon as they recharge... SC doesn't do much dmg but it sucks hella amounts of END from mobs... really helps out the tanks in the thick of things... oh, & I lurve zapp, sniper bolt ZORCH!!!!

Talk to me? About Storm/Elec? Why? Because I have a Storm/Elec 50? Understandable. I'm with Nak, although I no longer have Gale. I wasn't using it enough, though it does have it's uses. Freezing Rain is very awesome. I've got mine triple-slotted for Def Debuff, with a recharge or two and EndRed. It is great. I skipped Hurricane in my original build but picked it up in my last respec. I like it, though I don't use it much. That's partly because I don't play him much now cause of all my alts. I love Tornado. Tanks and Scrappers tend to dislike me when I use Tornado, but it's a great power. Especially if you're teaming with a Troller. Have the Troller hit them with an Immob and drop Freezing Rain and Tornado on them and they die. I mean arrest. Thunder Clap is okay, though I'd put two Acc in it if you plan on using it reliably. I've got an Ill/Storm at almost 37 now, and she gets great use of Thunder Clap.
