I have been seeing a lot of solo underworld guides. I would like to try them out but I have never been to the underworld before! Please can someone tell this noob what I need to do to get there and where it is?

when you read the guides good they should give you enough info :P. anyway, im starting again with guildwars but i played UW 24/7 so i should remmeber at least a thing XD
no you need to go to "Temple og Ages" in Prophesies and talk to the ghost before balthasar, pay 1k and tada

Be carefull with solo UW guides at this moment. A lot of skills that were used are now updated with new requierements. Some last shorter, have quicker recharge.
The thing that will make every solo build harder at this moment is the fact that rend enchantments (dying nightmares use that to remove your enchantments) is cast in 1 second now which makes interrupting pretty tricky and as soon as that happens its all over.
Try to find a build that does not depends heavily on enchants.

ele/mesmer FTW!.....its enchant heavy and doesnt have a problem with dying's, as long as you are away that they spawned.....simply run when they spawn(before you aggro the group, or after if its smites), and you can easily at least pull the dying alone far enough to kill him.
I really should write up a guide for that.....(i've done 2 UW runs POST-nerf without a problem)

Right now, the fastest (and probably the safest also) is the
Elementalist/Mesmer Earth build. There was this guy on gwguru that posted the guide first, and the skill setup is like this:
Sandstorm (Elite)
Earthquake
Aftershock
Storm Djinn's Haste
Stoneflesh Aura
Stone Strike
Mantra Of Earth
Sympathetic Visage
Stats:
earth 16 (3+1)
Illusion Magic 9
Inspiration Magic 7
Energy storage 8 (+2)
Air Magic 4 (+1)
use a +20%enchantment staff or a totem axe
now, if you plan to use the build your going to need some training, don't expect it to work at the first try. For myself, I lost 13k the first times, but now it's starting to pay back.
when you first arrive in UW, go talk to the ghost NPC (without aggroing foes).
the place should be flooded by grasping darkness now. cast the mantra and all your enchantment skills except SV, and then rush right into a group of aatxes and darkness. QUICKLY run back again to the circle you started at or even further if it's needed, so that the aatxes will stop to chase you.
Now, wait until all of the graspings have used up their interrupting strike. cast SV, and follow up with Sandstorm, hang on a sec, and continue with the combo eartquake+aftershock. the squids won't be totally dead, but close to. just cast aftershock again, or repeat the whole procedure.
When you have cleared the whole area, the gate to the right will open. Now you need to run past the aatxes. Cast every enchantment except for SV, and start to run right at the gate, but not totally through it! usually, a dying nightmare spawns, and strips your enchantments if your unlucky (meaning, every time). it shouldn't be any threat, sine the aatxes will stop to follow you before the enchantments are stripped. Simply wand the nightmare to death, before you continue to run through the gate, and up to the smite area.
when killing smites, use the same procedure as when killing the squids. DO NOT AGGRO THE COLDFIRES! Just don't... they'll hurt you seriously, most likely kill you.
I guess that's it... it's posted much better somewhere in gwguru, but I can't find it...
if I made some mistakes, I'll try to correct it.

You must be unlucky, I've only had a nightmare spawn there twice out of 10+ runs.
As for the coldfires, they can hurt but if you do aggro them, get all your armor up if you can, and use storm djinn's haste and run like hell. Works best if you strafe left and right as you run, cause you can dodge their shardstorm....the only thing that hits through your armor, and it slows you down.

Yeah it's good, but seriously the ele/mes build posted is WAY more effective, I use it myself - and once you've mastered it there isn't a more profitable solo build in the game IMO :)

I must have bad luck.....I get about 3k gold for a full run, which aint bad for how fast they go, BUT I only get an ecto once every other run or so. I got 1 ecto to the last 4 runs of done....next time I get any ecto though it will most likely be 2 in 1 run.

I AM very unlucky, I've played this game for 15 months, and I haven't even gotten a black dye yet >_<
only 6 ectos during that period aswell, it speaks for itself.
Also, if it's your first time ever in UW, I strongly suggest that you find a PuG so that you can get into and just look around a bit, so you get a feeling of how it is. Also, checking out what guildwiki says about UW and the monsters is a smart choice.
good luck, and don't be discouraged by the numerous deaths you will have in the beginning! It's definately worth it ;-)

Theres also a W/Rt guide out there but I can't accsess it ATM because of the "more guides" button is hooked. It probaly the safest build for soloing in the UW and despite what people say I can do it in about 15-20 mins a run, not the 35 they think it takes lol.

Hehe i did my first ever 4 man trapper run and i got 2 ectos and the second run i did i got 1 ecto ^.^ Beginner's Luck FTW!
