Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

As some of you know...I have "issues" with teaming. It seems that nearly every time I find myself on a PUG (pick up group) I discover that the members of the team are extremely inexperienced and tend to not know their...posteriors from their elbows.

Since Issue 8, that hasn't really been a problem. Enter...Vetern Rewards!

Yes, there's a wonderful hidden use for Vet Rewards. You get invited to a PUG. You target each member of the group, right click on them and select the "Info" pop up. Click on the badges. Low and behold, the vet reward badges are right near the top. So, although you can't really tell based on the level of the character if they have gaming experience, you can see which Vet Reward badges they have...if any.

Mind you, this is NOT a be-all-and-end-all of telling if a group is good, but it might help explain why people aren't doing so well when things go badly in a mission. It might also give you an excellent opportunity to help mentor some of the game's neophytes and help make them better players. After all, the person might not be BAD, they might just be inexperienced.

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

Definently agree with you there Ron. However, the other night I joined a PUG and after checking Vet status thought I was in for some good, fast exp. I was the "rookie" of the group so to speak. The 4 others I was teamed with were all 18 month+.
It turned out to be the worst PUG I have had in a long time. The only thing I could come up with was that they were all playing ATs they had never played before, or there were monkeys driving them.
Needless to say I bailed after the 2nd mish.

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

Another note: Vet Rewards reveal only how long the ACCOUNT has existed, not how much experience the person at the helm at that particular moment may have. Still, it's a pretty good idea that I plan on implementing (Lord knows I have some PUG horror stories)

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

Apparently Ron missed my rant about getting screwed out of my vet rewards. I've been playing since I2, as Ron already knows, yet I have vet badges going back only to when I upgraded with CoV. I can't be the only one.

I also know some extremely capable players who bought a second account so they could have more toons on one server, have one on CoV to mirror each of their 8 on CoH, to powerlevel themselves, because they used a trial account when they were broke and wanted to keep their new toons, or just so they can transfer funds without trusting anyone else. Toons on their second accounts have significantly fewer vet badges. And don't forget that the guy with no vet rewards at all might be Red Scout between time cards.

Many people also prefer to buy old accounts, rather than spend the time it takes to grind a character up to level 50. These people are often the greenest of greenhorns, yet might have any number of vet badges.

I absolutely refuse to judge a player based on how many vet badges I see. I'll judge them based on how well they fight.

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

*groan* Don't remind me about getting screwed out of vet reward time. I started playing about a month after the game went live and have only about 6 months of downtime at the most, yet I will only get my 21 month badge next week.

On topic, I've played with some groups where the ones with only a couple of vet badges play FAR better than some with 30 month badges. It can be a good judge, but like Ron did point out, it's not the defining judge of a player's skill.

This doesn't always work. I've met players with over two years of "experience" who are total idiots/noobs - whichever you like - and players with less than three months who are very professional!

I agree completely. The number of vet badges means nothing to me. I much rather play with a fresh player who came over from Guildwars or something than an arrogant prick who is there to tell me how to play. I'll only judge after I've played with somebody. Besides, what is the use of checking? If I have already decided to join the team, I will make the best of it regardless.

This works great unless they bought their account last week of Ebay. But other than that small risk it would or should give you a good idea of the person you are playing with.

But then again even if they are a person w/ 2 years plus time they still could be bad player. Much like the vast core of blasters...wait..did I type that out loud? argh.....

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

"Bad Blasters" who said that?

I agree the Vet badges may give some indication as to how well a player may be, however the only real way is to see them in action. PPl who share accounts are a prime example of this.

Wha?!? Build Up + Aim + Inferno = BLOWN UP THREAD!!!

Anyhow, I always thought PuG were a myth... LOL

I am in a great coalition with Global Heroics, Wild Cards, and Fusion Force. Plus there is the Gameamp Alliance, and other groups ran by various members here... I can't remember the last time I needed a PuG.

Bad players can play just as long as good players, however, as a general rule, the longer someone plays, the better they are at knowing how the game works. It's not an exact science, I've been in teams where the person with the most vet badges besides myself was a 6 monther and they were excellent teams. However, it's a nice guideline to tell WHY things are going badly and to give you the opportunity to make them better.

Unfortunately with the time of day that I play, I often need to resort to a PUG. :/ I really need to get to know more people in the coalitions. :)

I'm with Nak. I'm rarely on PuGs. It's only when I'm on at a very odd time that I find myself on one. I'm also in the Global Heroics/Fusion Force/Wild Cards coalition. There are lots of people in that coalition, and they are great people. There are times I log in and am sent an invite before I can even say Hi on the global channel. Okay, I guess that was a bit of a plug for them. Oh well.

I do despise PuGs. That's one of the reasons I have a couple good solo toons for those times I'm on and can't get a good team.

Easy fix to the PuG situation....make toons that can solo effectively....lol. Actually, it's what I do with most of mine anymore.

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

I find the best thing about vet badges is the ability not to get mad at a non-educated/dumb/wtf? player when you realize they have no vet badges and are just starting out. You can save your n00b-rage for those dumbasses that have many vet badges and yet they have no idea what they're doing but think they do.

RE: Hidden Advantage to Vet Reward Badges...

It is funny. For most of my gametime I have been playing I soloed. I have had so many people wonder how I survive with Col Flag as a scrapper when everyone else will get wiped out. Simple, I designed him to solo because that was all I did for so long. I have a hard time teaming with people at first if I dont know them because they almost always have atleast one person that tries to tell me how to play my character. Sure If I do something stupid I am the first to admit I screwed up and apoligize for it. But if I am playing and I am not getting my team killed doing something then I dont see the problem. If they would give me good constructive critiques as some do then I listen. But when they just tell me that a scrapper cant tank and I should let the tank go in there and die....I have a problem.

To be honest I dont even look at the vet rewards people have. I figure everyone learns at a different level. But I also understand Ron's point of view by looking at them =)
