New guy looking for advice.

I am a long time D2 player and just now started playin GW. I have the original and I also have Nightfall. My question is: Whats is the best beginner build to farm? also where is the best place for a beginner to start looking for better gear. I have a lvl 7 ranger and a few more chars I've started on. I wish I had factions so I could use the assasin. I want a cookie cutter build and advice on using him. I dont wanna lose interest in this game right off. It seems pretty good. I'd also like to team up with anyone to learn more. All i see in towns are 5000000 people running around. So in short, help a noob out. LOL! Thanks!

First off:
Welcome to Gameamp!
Secondly, I'd suggest you try and get through the storyline first, so just follow all the Primary Quests, and complete all the Missions. You shouldn't need much money at that stage in the game.

RE: New guy looking for advice.

1. Welcome!
2. First, do all of the primary quests and missions until you reach Consulate Docks. That is when you can first get max armor. If you can afford it, I would also buy armor around 1/2 way there, when you reach Blacktide Den.
3. Don't even try to farm until you reach level 20. After that, I suggest joining a 4 or 5 man trapping group. Just follow directions, and that is an easy build.

Welcome to Guildwars and Gameamp!!!

I completely agree with Dark Knight in that you should follow the story and finish the game first and farm later.

If you start farming right now and bypass the story line, then it just becomes boring.

I'll continue doing my quests. What is the best build I can use. I wanted the assasin, but dont have factions to get her. So with the choices i have from nightfall and the original, whats the best build to use. and second profession. I know this sounds repetitive, but what is the most popular build. warrior/monk? ranger/elementalist? I guess thats what I'm trying to say. adn what skills are my primary attacks. thanks in advance for your replies and patience!

RE: New guy looking for advice.

Welcome to Game Amp.

Well, there are some good starter combinations, with Warrior/Monk being most used, though it's quite hard nowadays getting into a party, since Warrior/Monks are aplenty.

Try Ranger/Monk, or perhaps a shot at Necromancer/Monk, since unless your aiming for taking henchmen most of the time, these combinations are easier to take.

Ofcourse the decision is all up to you, if your in a guild, you could later on just ask for help, so that problem with the Warrior/Monk thing would be fixed.

Since you have Nightfall, you could also make a paragon, or dervish, i'd go for Dervish first, paragon is a bit hectic sometimes (atleast thats my opinion) their good damage dealers too with that, just not too much builds on farming for them yet.

Edit: just readed last line, you really call yourself willingly a noob? shouldn't be so harsh on yourself already :P

About getting help from people in-game, you could join our guild [ToD]. Or if you don't wanna do that yet, I could just help you out in game with quests and stuff. My in-game names are: Zak Mcracken, Ribok Kirash, Ele Mela Jela, Pvp Sassin, and theres some other ones. You could just add me to your friends and whisper me and I can help you out.

RE: New guy looking for advice.

Welcome to Gameamp, Jlmccown!

The staff hope you enjoy your stay in our digital corner of the universe.

As far as which professions, well-It's all up to your style of play that you prefer. There are the melee ones and then there's the spellcasters. Each will give you a different ability to play. I personally, prefer to play a Monk. I haven't had too much difficulty finding a group (even a PUG) within a mission. Plus, I don't have to worry about dealing damage. I leave that up to the rest of the team I help keep alive.

Try them all if you are able to. I am almost sure you will find one or two to your liking. :p

For around Istan, it's easy to solo the level 2 Juvenile Bladed Termites with most if not all characters. For a Ranger, you can max out your Marksmanship and Expertise, bring Hunter's Shot and Pin Down, and then just pick off most any melee monster that you can get alone. Just Pin Down to Cripple them, Hunter's Shot to deal some damage, and repeat whenever you can. Since the enemies are at -50% movespeed, you can just back away from them whenever they get close and they'll not deal much damage. You should even be able to beat the Irontooth Drakes if you take some Stances that give a block% like Whirling Defense or skills such as Throw Dirt which Blind the enemies. Hunter's Shot, Pin Down, Whirling Defense, and Throw Dirt are all available in Kamadan (Throw Dirt is from the Hero Skills Trainer).

For a beginner looking for better gear, look around Istan for Collectors. There's one with a bow in the river in the Plains of Jarin that trades for Termite Legs and another just outside Sunspear Great Hall for Mandragor Carapaces (Mandragor are creatures that are invisible until you get close; there's several groups around the Great Hall). There's also armor collectors who give better armor as well.

In the alternative, for weapons you can hunt down bosses from your profession and kill them. Bosses will drop green items which come with weapon mods. Green items rarely have the best possible mods, but until you can build your own weapons from scratch they're more than adequate.

For armor, while it is significantly more expensive than relying on collectors, you can go to an armor crafter. On Istan, there's crafters in Kamadan, Jokanur Diggings, Blacktide Den, and Consulate Docks. You likely won't be able to access Blacktide Den or Consulate Docks until later though (BtD opens after the second mission, while Docks opens after the primary quests after the third).

For a Ranger, you'll probably want to go mostly Marksmanship right now. Usually Beast Mastery is a waste unless you really know what you're doing, and even then it requires skills that won't be available for a while. I'd suggest something like this for a build:

Hunter's Shot
Screaming Shot
Crossfire
Troll Unguent
Whirling Defense
Throw Dirt
Ressurection Signet
1 Other

This is a pure-damage low-level Ranger build. I've always found that for a Ranger secondary profession doesn't matter, which means that it defaults to Monk for the reusable ressurection spells (especially Rebirth).

There's a lot of popular builds, and many of them work very well. It's actually easier to suggest things for you to AVOID trying than to suggest things to try. On that note:
W/Mo. This isn't a very good combination because it's much too tempting to try using Monk skills to heal yourself. While it can be done, for a beginner it'll be vastly more efficient and effective to use Warrior skills for this purpose.
N/W. While it might seem that someone with a sword and shield running into battle would be fine if they can lifesteal, this isn't gonna be the case unless you really know what you're doing. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself, and I've been playing for nearly a year and a half.
On that note, any /W character is gonna be tricky to play and you'll die a lot if you try to go into melee. If you take that secondary, avoid skills from any skill line but Tactics and avoid any skills from there that are labeled as attacks. This only holds slightly less for a D/W.

While in the past I would've suggested starting as a Monk, that isn't the case since the introduction of Heroes. People are no longer so desperate for Monks that you can allow hero Monks into the party, so Monk isn't the best starting profession anymore. Elementalist is probably the top of the list now since there's so many powerful AoE skills in Nightfall that they're highly desired again.

Oh, and even if you get Factions... Please don't make an Assassin until you're much more experienced. Assassins are the third most difficult class to play well in the game after only Mesmers and Warriors because it requires a vast amount of tactical awareness to know when, where, and how to use your teleports and survive. Also, don't make a Mesmer until you've gotten at least 2 other characters through to level 20 and probably well beyond; they require knowledge of how other professions work in order to effectively create counterbuilds to shut those others down, and a newbie isn't going to know how to do that. Finally, please don't make a Warrior because they require intimate familiarity with the aggro system of the game in order to tank, which is the primary purpose of a Warrior in most PvE teams.

Umm... Did I cover everything? I always forget which advice I've given to a person.

Oh yes! The final thing is this. There's a difference between a newb and a noob, that being that a newb is a new player who doesn't know anything due to a lack of opportunity while a noob is an idiot who doesn't know anything due to a lack of intelligence and/or trying. newb, while somewhat insulting, isn't terribly so... But calling someone a noob is a pretty deadly insult :P

RE: New guy looking for advice.

Monk is nice yes, but i have no idea how fast he understands Guild Wars, and i dont recommend monk immediatly as a starters, since the hard part is still keeping attention at all the party and your health and other stats, and your skills need to be balanced otherwise you run out of energy too fast, and especially with balanced, new players can not be expected to immediatly know how to balance your build out, that takes time.

Ofcourse, you could try, its just a bit harder, but it was my second character i started.

RE: New guy looking for advice.

Just try and find the thing you are most at ease with. That's the most important...

Up close and personal: dervish or warrior (though a dervish can be tricky to play, at least that is jmho....)

Distance melee: paragon or ranger

Easy spellcasting: Fire-elementalist

Difficult spellcasting : Mesmer and Necromancer

Easy support: healer monk

So, take the type of char YOU feel comfortable with, since you'll be spending an aweful lot of time with him or her...

Second: there are NO bad builds or bad characters in GW, just people who can't deal with certain builds (i suck at ele, necro and dervish....). So... Take your pick and learn the basics. Try to get into a guild that can show you around a bit, and learn you a thing or two.

Assasin: nice and very powerfull, but weak against physical damage. Easy to play but very hard to master! I suggest myself that you finish a game with a different type a char before you go out and make your sin.

Just my two cents...

Regards,
Michiel

RE: New guy looking for advice.

For all people starting the game, I always like to give this link out to them: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

You can find many builds on there, hints/tips on quests if you get stuck or need a map, and information about elite skills.

Sometimes it goes slow, but it's a great resource and specifically for starting players, it has these pages:
(Prophecies) http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Pre-Searing_guide
(Factions) http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Getting_started_%28Factions%29
(Nightfall) http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Getting_started_%28Nightfall%29

On the note of builds for a ranger, once you are able to get elites, I'd say one of the most often used ranger elites (on the PvE side) is Barrage. There aer many builds that you may hear of called "B/P" which stands for barrage pet and basically is what it says: bring barrage, a few disrupts, and your pet (with a few other skills). For further info and more builds, you can check both the Builds section on gw wiki (above) and the guides sectoin on this site.
