I got scammed

Lo everybody,

I've been playing Guild Wars for half a year now and I got scammed. I have no idea where to report it so I'll just try here. (my apologies if this is the wrong place)

I know it was stupid and all but I just dont want to let him get away with it.

He wanted a show of the Kanaxai Edge just outside Kaineng... since that was usual I let him. He wanted to buy it... he said for 53k... which is a fair price in my opinion.

But here it comes: He wanted me to drop the thing before he bought it.... I thought this to be very strange but since he walked away a very good distance (stupid as i was) dropped the thing to pick it right up again... but he beat me to it with the assasin teleport skill or something....

Anyway here is a screenie:
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/7030/gw001ct8.jpg

I just hope he gets what hee deserves....

Thanx for listening

RE: I got scammed

Unfortunately, its not a scam since you dropped the item therefore making it free game. Regardless of what this individual may have said to you about wanting to see the item, it was your choice to drop it.

As much as I hate to say this, the only advice I can give you is to be more careful with your items in the future.

RE: I got scammed

Thanx for your quick comments guys.

I did open trade with him... he closed that again and then asked me to drop the Sword...

Like I said its real stupid of me and I have no idea why I did it :S

Anyway I can't be fussed about the cash I lost, it's just the fact that I let myself be scammed... And I wonder(ed) if somebody can do something about it (him)

RE: I got scammed

You can try to report it here. In the list there is an emailadress to NCSoft for violation of conduct (the 2nd adress).
The ony problem is that the scam cant be read from the chat. It looks voluntarily in a way, but you can always try.

Hope this helped a bit.

EDIT:
Welcome to GameAMP btw ^^

RE: I got scammed

Well, this stands is a perfect example and warning to those that are just playing, or still haven't heard of that.

I mean, trade window can't be broken, and even so, then you shouldn't just drop it so he/she can take a look at it, it looks the same when you wield it.

Hope you find yourself another weapon like that soon, too bad it doesn't count as scamming... :/

RE: I got scammed

This type scam has been going on for a long time. I remember it from Diablo 2 with items that weren't allowed to be placed inside the trade window that were very high value.

Problem in that game though was it was a hack. They would have a tracer program running to get your IP address, and when you dropped the item, they would ping bomb you and you would lag off the server and by the time you came back (if not kicked offline), your item and the scammer was gone and the account they were on was empty as well.

It does come down to your fault, but I do believe that A-Net would at least lock his account for a few days. All they can personally do though is ask him to return the item to you. Nothing more, nothing less. Would take a whole server roll-back to make the incident go away, and while making you happy, would massively PO about 99% of the GW population.

Be more careful in the future. My philosophy is, if it looks like a scam, smells like a scam, or can become a scam, it is. I've probably lost some legit trades from this, but, it's worth it to lose a few k here and there than to lose several or even your account.

Not to flame you, cause I know how bad you feel right now, but come on. Dropping an item....why????? Sorry to say it, but he didnt scam you. You may have been a sucker to fall for it, but as soon as you dropped it it did become fair game. Not that it is right, but it is legal.

RE: I got scammed

I appreciate all your points made here and understand here...

It's my own stupid fault and I will fully admit it... however... It's not the fact that I lost a weapen or a few k.

It's the whole point of people like this spoiling the game and tricking other people into these scams... I for one have 6 fully equiped chars and play the game for fun and like to make some profitable trades.... for the fun of it.

But some people say "fair game"... thats not true... it's downright dirty and something should be done about it.

What is the definition of a scam if this isn't one...

You could say I voluntered to drop the weapon... yes I did...

But you can also say that someone volunteers to press the trade button when gold is put in instead of k (in the older days)

Where do we draw the line?

Just wondering....

RE: I got scammed

But as you might know, not every person on this lump of rock is nice, honest, and does good deeds, there are always people that want to get money, or items easier.

And its through these tricks, to get people like you, to get their weapons and money from.
Ofcourse your mad, but theres very little to be done about scammers, i know that atleast (from what i heard myself from players all my Guild Wars playing time) 70% of the people i know that got scammed, didn't even know how to report, and once i told them atleast half of them decided not to even try since it was too late, let alone that they forgot to take a screenshot of actual scam.

Loss isn't too great for you, its just the idea that you got scammed while your normally always alert that is bad.

He does have a point there. You put up 2 ectos and they put up 20 gold instead of 20k. You hit accept. Who's fault? You hit the trade without thinking. Yes other person did wrong but so did you.

It is very hard to draw the line. Only time I drop a item on the ground is if I don't want it or quickly giving someone something that is not valuable when we are not in town.

Anet could make something similar to loot drops from monsters. You drop a item and item stays attached to you "not full 10 min's but maybe 2-3 mins" and a certain amount of time goes by before someone else can pick it up.

This would stop those time of scams unless you are close to enemies and person draws enemies to you so you die and just wait it out.

What can be done about it? Absolutely nothing, except what you change about yourself.

Making GW scam free? Same idea as world peace, it ain't gonna happen.

There does not exist any method that companies like Blizzard or ArenaNet can use to stop scammers. They can help slow them down a bit, but they can't stop them.

The only 99% sure way to avoid these things is your actions.

-Don't be in such a rush to sell/buy items.

-Don't trust anyone who you don't know well enough. (Sadly, sometimes even people you trust can get you.)

-Keep control over the situation. Don't get yourself involved in any complicated or unnecessary trading.

-Remember, you can say no.

As you willingly dropped the item, I don't think Anet can do anything. There wasn't any in-game glitches or any complications that could make it seem you had no control.

Sorry but theres nothing you can do about it unless he pm'd you after saying "haha nub i scammed u!". Sorry to ehar about your lose but in the end ANet can't do anything. Also if someone put only 20g insteed of 20k it isn't considered scamming by ANet either since you would have to hit accect as well.

ya that sucks always trade with the trade screen i dont think anyone has ever had a case where their trading doesnt work. Also make sure you scroll over their item before you hit accept theres a scam where they show you a good item for a fair or cheep price, then when they are about to do the trade they cancel, say they dont have any room in inventory or max gold and then reopen trade with a item that looks the same but isnt the one you wanted, ive heard lots of people complain about this one recently.

Its quite an old trick though, but yeah, heard something about it being a totally ''hot'' scam trick again.

RE: I got scammed

You have my sympathy for getting scammed and thankyou for posting in a way which will allow others to avoid this scam.

This does however bring me onto a slightly more active way of stopping this from happening; it would be very good if gameamp could have an "advice for players" section which contains the very basics of the game and advice on avoiding scammers or funding your very first set of armour. These things are in the tips section but I think tips can be a little daunting to a player who doesn't quite know what they're looking for.

That fits in very nicely with my current pet project the gameamp guild wars knowledge base, a new front page providing links to info that all players would find of use. Thanks for mentioning the all important info about avoiding scams, that will definately make it in there.

Sorry to hear about your loss, thankyou for sharing that loss, doesn't matter how old or how simple a scam may be there are always going to be players unaware of it.

RE: I got scammed

I rember one time i almost got ripped off.I cant really say scamed cuz it was my fault. But I was selling gold hammers durring a mission and the person asked to see them so i showed him two of them.
After a minute he decided what one he wanted. But when i went to modify the offer i accidently hit accept and gave them both to him for the price of one.I instantly saw my mistake and begged him for one back, but he ignored me.
Luckly i was the only monk and when he died noone else had res.So he finally decided it was in his best intrest to give one back.Sorry you got scamed. But now you know better.

Well, good luck with the scamming arse and getting your money back. If someone is able to avoid getting scammed because of this story, than your Kanaxi's Edge was worth it.

RE: I got scammed

Although most everyone expresses sympathy I find it downright depressing that so many people think that if someone encourages another to do something and then takes advantage of that person its somehow "fair" or makes something "fair game".

If not technically a "scam" this is certainly unethical behavior and prohibited under the EULA if for no other reason than hampering the enjoyment of others playing the game.

In "real life" when con artists ask your Grandmother, with the promise of some future benefit, to withdraw her savings and hand it over to them and then take off with it the police call it "fraud" and "theft" and it is a crime.

Just because this is a game and the theft is "virtual" doesn't make it any less despicable. Somehow being somewhat anonymous on ones computer seems to bring out the worst in an increasing number of people. We all need to be alert to it and to try and bring with us (and to encourage from others) a modicum of civility and ethical behavior in here to at least as low a level as in the "real world" although it might be reasonable to expect somewhat higher standards from computer users who are, supposedly, better educated than the average citizen...

Think of it this way my friend,

My credit card isnt sliding through, could I watch you do it instead?

Or have you seen a movie where the guy will say, "put the money in front of you on the ground?

Or why did the chicken cross the road? because someone put an uber item out of there inventory into the grab-able hyperspace mmo turf where free item grabbing is made possible.

Ahh topics like this take me back to my D2 days:

"Hey want a free version of MH?! ftp me!" **all your items drop on the ground and you are booted from D2**

"Paying gold for all ur junk sojs!!!! PM ME!!"

"Seriously..I'll give your gaze back, I just want to see how it looks on my character."

Sorry man, but you fell for one of the oldest tricks in the book.

Unfortunately these things happen. I have been scammed before and i know how it feels!

Just think about it's only a game. It's only fake imaginary items and it doesn't matter, doing that makes me feel better after ive been scammed.

Best thing to do is forget about it and farm or make money and replace it.
