As I've been looking over the various titles available and the numerous strategies which could be used to earn them, I began to ask myself some questions regarding the purpose and point to the whole concept of titles. I'm curious to hear others' views on these questions as well, so I thought I'd post them and see where the GW community stands on the topic.
What are titles?
Why do you (personally) like/dislike titles?
What standards do you think titles help/hinder you to achieve?
How do titles influence your perception of players IG?
To get the thread started...
IMO: Titles are the IG equivalent of a doctor's license, a policeman's badge, or a soldier's medals. They help players distinguish between those who are serious gamers (and thus likely to be skilled and well-informed) and those who are casual weekenders (less likely to be skilled and not as well-informed).
I have a problem w/ players who want to own titles but do not want to earn them - for example, /roll in PvP. As a tie-breaker, /roll is a good idea but I am very much against teams using it to avoid battles altogether.
IMO titles are supposed to reflect your ability to play the game. The benefits that come w/ some titles (such as increased faction or dmg done to monsters) are supposed to be rewards to those who persevere - they are priviledges, not rights.
What think you? (And remember, no flaming - state your opinion and remember that others have the right to a different one)

I think you are right, but at the same time using your analogy you could think of people today who will go to school or college and cheat there way through and still get a badge, liscence etc. But the key thing to remember is, those type of people who just crawl there way through will do it the rest of their lives and their play will be equivalant to that of someone who is supposibly not as educated.
I think your point cannot be more true, and I would agree with you fully that it should be a right, but it just wont happen sadly. You will always have those people out there who will "cheat" their way through, I guess thats just life :-/

I very much agree with your point aswell. Titles to me are challenges that are meant to test your skill and persevearance. It really annoys me when people ask for quick and "easy" ways to get titles.
I currently have very few titles as i dont have the time to dedicate to them, but whenever i get the chance i do a bit more. This keeps it fun and exciting.
Unfortunately there isnt any way to stop poeple from taking shortcuts, but i dont believe that it matters at all. Someone who takes shortcuts may have titles, but when you see their gameplay it is clear that they arnt really that good.

hi evenmeer :) i checked out your guild site + your art the other day ^^ very nice work all round :)
im a fan of 'most' titles i like the ones you have to earn and put the effort into to get, but i dont like ones you can buy, for example the drunkard or the eating one :)
i personally do not want to spend 2000 platinum to get a max title, whers the fun in that!
last title i got was 'legendary survivor' :)
WTB: mallyx's perpetrtuity or snapjaws powerstone! plz whisper me ingame/1 thanks ^^ name in sigclicky>W/A KD CONDITION

Let be honest what i think you said is that you should drop your life if you want to earn a title and to be a serious gamer. Is that it? Because you said nothing different besides that.

well there arent many titles that you can take shortcuts with are there? the cartographer titles cabt be shortcutted, the protector titles i suppose could be by leeching, skill hunter title is no easy task either. and getting fame is difficult (well for me anyway), so im always in awe when i see someone with "renowned hero (9)" (i think thats it). and i could go on forever about every title and its shortcuts, but i wont so ill stop now

Title is a challenge. I already posted somewhere that titles were that something that brought me back to GW. When i started to play prophecies i was bored on second week of intense playing, though i didnt even make it to post searing. I just didn't know how. Then, when i started visiting diffirent sites about GW i found info about titles. From that time i started playing again and never stopped. Cause survivor title was that
reward for staying alive for a long time that none other online game had.
And from that day i decided to make all my roleplaying characters survivors, with one exeption for my brothers warrior. Though none of my survivors made it to lvl 20 yet,
game seems much more interesting when you have only one life.
Titles rule, but theres always people who got them easy, without gaining experience.
Person with 3-4 maxed titles (survivor,protector,explorer +
optional) in your party will act like morale boost.
Soon... Or never.

Titles simply show you achieved something, the skill hunter title shows everyone else that for a fact, you have quite some elite skills (or all of them)
The Drunkard and Sweet Tooth skills shows lesser men and women that you have spended alot of cash on something you thought worthy to pay for.
Titles for one person are a sign of power, and to another person a sign of uselessness, its your opinion how you think of it.
At this very moment, im quite done with playing Guild Wars, so i decided to go skill hunting and go for some exploration titles while im at it, keeps me playing Guild Wars nonetheless :P

I think some titles are more impressive than others....leaving aside KOABD and PKM, in PvE I would say that protector, grandmaster cartographer (especially tyrian), and the current max elite skills title (can't be maxed at the moment) are the most impressive. This is because I think they take actual time and effort to achieve. I'm sure it's not every case, but when I see things like drunkard titles, or sweet tooth, the first thing I think is gold sellers or ebay.
[edit] I dont use ebay or gold sellers, and actively encourage against their use. I'm currently trying to get both drunkard and sweet tooth on my main character, and the gold amount needed is just ridiculous.

Currently mixing Skill Hunting in Tyria with Exploring ^^

PuffyDog - Nope, I don't believe that a serious gamer is simply someone w/ no life. In fact, it is b/c I know (personally) that GW can't (and shouldn't) be the main priority in a person's life that I believe titles should belong only to those people who put more effort into the game than simply leeching or /roll-ing.
I wish that every title was cheat-proof precisely b/c it would allow players to know, w/out a doubt, just how serious another player was about the game.
Having said that, I also want to make it clear that I do believe that any game you are not employed (ie, being paid by another party) to play should focus on FUN more than anything else. However, it is also true that there is such a thing as "serious fun".
B/c GW focuses on skill rather than on hrs played, I feel that it is a game for those who enjoy the challenge of "serious fun". I also feel that a good part of the fun is derived from earning your success through trial-and-error, research, smart IG investments, and interaction w/ other players.
Titles, IMO, are the proof that you made the effort and that it was worth it - not that you have no life outside of playing the game.
There are the good, there are the evil, and there are the clueless... and really, the clueless are the ones who have all the fun; the rest are too busy with their respective purposes. - Evinmeer
