Here is a small 'guide' on what to do I found useful. Got this on the official CoV Forums actually....

To Muad Dib and others who look at their screens and go, "buh?"
Step 1: Explore. You'll get tons of gold and possibly even items. You have full energy when you first start. Enjoy it, energy recharges slllooooowwwwlllyyy.
Step 2: Explore some more. You have a lot of energy, exploring only costs 25. Keep exploring, build your money.
Step 3: The shop. Sell off extra items you have and buy what you're lacking. Got 3 training swords? Sell 2 keep 1 for yourself. Didn't get any armor? Buy one now.
Step 4: Equipment. Be sure to EQUIP your sword and armor. Otherwise you're attacking naked and barefisted. While it may be an amusing sight, it's hardly worthwile.
Step 5: Training. Without the right skills, you can't fight. Training up skills costs gold, and the number of skill points you can have is determined by how many people have clicked your link (explained later).
Step 6: Attack. Now that you've gotten equipment and skills, try your hand at combat. Pick someone who's weaker than you for now and have at them! Experience and gold are earned for winning a battle.
Step 7: On the "main" tab there's a link. Copy and paste it into your sig block here, on other forums, your email sig line, in blogs, and anywhere else you can that won't get you banned. The more people who click it, the more followers you'll get. The more followers you have, the more skill points you'll have (# of followers = # of maximum points in a skill). Also, clicking your own link counts toward the # of followers.
What happens when you level up? You'll see in red text on the left side of your screen informing you of a level up. Go into skills and the bottom half of the screen. Pick one of those abilities and hit "Train".
Don't forget to EXPLORE! Gold and items await you in the wilderness. Improve your skills, improve your gear, attack someone high than you.
