I just hit 38 with my Empath/Rad defender last night (right at the end of Numinia TF :) ), and was considering getting my nuke power (Atomic Blast). Was just wondering how effective it is for a defender (especially an Empath) to use a nuke.
I was thinking if I first cast Regen and Recovery Aura on everyone, I should be able to safely use a nuke without to much worry about anyone dieing during the subsequent no endurance period. Any thoughts?

My suggestion is when it's time to pick an epic power pool, go with either Dark or Electric. Both of those sets have an END Heal in them. Power Sink in Elec, and Dark Consumption from Dark. With an END Heal, you can use your nuke and then get end back from any remaining mobs. The trick is having a blue inspiration to pop after the nuke so you have enough END to use the END Heal.
And Yes. Defender Nukes are worth having. I've never lvl'd an Emp, but I see no reason why you shouldn't get it.

just so you know, RA wont counteract the -end effect, because the power has an effect of having no end. if you use a blue insp, then use RA when the -end effect wears off, you can get back to full end in a very short time.

Having RA on will allow you to recover END after using your nuke.

I know there is nothing that can prevent the ten second or so no end regen time. I just figured that dropping RA will help me get it back quicker after that.

I know a lot of Empath Defenders that get their Nuke. It's still a superior damage power for your set.
If you are going to have to limit yourself to only having a few attacks, you mught as well have the best one in the set.
It gives you a reason to burn a red or yellow inspiration every onece in a while!

Warron speaks thusly:
No comment on best nuke, they all have their ups and downs.
As far as the no end thingy, its not actually coded to give absolutely no endurance. That is not possible with CoX's game engine. What is given is a very heavy -recovery effect and a side cost of 120ish endurance points, enough that its guaranteed to drop you to zero regardless of any accolades. The -recovery effect can be countered by any and all +recovery effects, though the end result may not be noticable immediately. I know for fact that with RA slotted with 3 End Mod active and Adrenalin Boost with 3 End Mod on the character using the nuke that you will gain endurance back immediately after using a nuke, though it is very, very slowly. The combination of both recovery effects slotted so well *should* (in my experience, it always has) counter the -recovery from a nuke enough to get end back.
Hope this helps,
Warron

I've got a 41 Emp/Rad fender so I'll throw out my 2 cents...
I'm a team fender, so all heals with very low dmg output, my only damage is focused on aoes to get the most out of the debuffs with the Rad set, so she's limited to Neutrino Bolt (lvl 1), Irradiate (PBAoE), Neutron Bomb (Target AoE) and Atomic Blast (Nuke). (if it wasn't for the Vet Reward Sands of Mu I couldn't kill anything)
I find it most useful when I'm on a team slapping around an AV simply because most of the time I'm way too busy healing to waste the time or endurance to drop the nuke, however, once the group is narrowed down to just the AV, I'll drop the nuke and spam my debuffs as they come up and that's when we really see the AV start to drop.
The damage output isn't nearly as impressive as I've seen with other nukes like Nova or Inferno, but it does pack a wallop and it does leave some dudes choking on a toxic gas cloud when used in a larger group. Most of the time it's my OH CRAP! power for those situations when the team's half wiped and there's just a few dudes left with low health beating on what's left standing of my team, it's a nice way to either finish them off or do enough dmg to make it easier on those left alive. I'd never try this without a couple of blues handy though because that's a situation when I'm usually needed to get back into healing mode ASAP.

Being an empathy I woulden't recommend it at all!
Unless you have something else planned out but in most cases I would say no!
Now like if you werent an emp I would suggest it!
I have it on my kin/rad and I just walk up fulcrum shift and pop my nuke and they are dazed and confused :P

Granted this is an old topic getting revived, but it all depends on your build and if the Empath powers are filled out to your liking. I know plenty of Empath Defenders that save up power slots and fill out Empathy so that they can have one or two of the big attacks.
There are going to be some times when your point running crew are killing things so fast that the Empath gets bored. Sometimes there isn't much to heal if we are killing machines. It's a very impressive looking nuke to boot for the set.
If you have the slots, have some fun. Sure it may gather dust if you have to heal a lot, but save up for a rainy day when we can kill faster than they can DPS us. We shouldn't pidgeon hole Empaths in their power selections.

Pop a red, hit irradiate (nice debuff effect so you will hit more), then nuke. Works fine.

Thank you everyone that replied. I did end up taking the nuke anyway and seems to be working out just fine. When the whole team is under recovery & regeneration aura, healing duties tend to get a little lighter so dropping a nuke isn’t too much of a problem. Granted, I don’t kill everything like a blaster would but what is still left standing (and gagging) gets cleaned up pretty quickly. And since still under my own RA, the End comes back quick so there is not really that much down time.
