| Very displased with some of your adverts to the right |

Now I think that as a popular site for the community it is important to do the right things for that community. However I have noticed that on the side advertisments there is often links to sites that are doing totally illegal and imoral things.
For example. I noticed that some of them mention sites which have listed exploits and cheats for CoH. Clearly that is not something that a respected website should be doing as that kind of behavior should not be expected by players and is certainly encouraging others to break the terms of service for the game.
Secondly I see sites which are offering not only powerleveling services for a price but also the ability to buy used accounts for not only CoH but other games as well. This is totally illegal since it clearly states that people who play the game are NOT to make any profit or monetary gain from it.
I would urge you to remove these adverts and others like it from your site since its encouraging people to abuse the game because you show their advert.

I'm not sure about this, but I think that Gameamp makes their sites put up a Google search for commercial sites dealing with whatever is on the page. Any site manageers wanna help clarify?

right now i'm not seeing any advertisments on the right hand side, but i know that when they are up there it is the google search... i will speak to nogame about this and see if we can get those gone permantely...

The adverts appear to the right like this:
I know for a fact that the devs will not approve of people using their game to make money from, plus under the EULA it clearly states that one account is only to be used by a single person so they are illegal because of that alone. I know that alot of us let partners and such use our accounts but you don't see us advertise it and certainly not publically charge for it either.
The sites which list exploits naturally are breaking the EULA and the fact that they charge for the information is even worse.
What I'm gonna do is see if I can contact NCSoft to find their position on sites which offer these powerleveling services. I personally think it violates something but they know the legal ins and outs however I'd urge you as responsible members of the community not to promote powerleveling services.
Found the bit about how you're not allowed to use the games content for any monerary gain. It specifically talks about fanfiction and derivitive arts but it does say that the players can only use the game content in a "noncommercial contexts" so clearly starting a business around powerleveling is very much commerical since its using the game to make money.
"City of Heroes is comprised, without limitation, of software code, programs, routines, subroutines, objects, files, data, characters (including but not limited to attributes comprising or associated with a character or Member account), graphics, sound effects, music, animation, video, text, content, layout, design and other information downloaded from and accessible through the Service (collectively, the "Game Content").
Members are permitted to make use of Game Content in noncommercial contexts, including in connection with the creation of noncommercial fan fiction and fan sites relating to City of Heroes. Members are prohibited, however, from reproducing, preparing derivative works based upon, distributing publicly performing, or transmitting the Game Content for commercial uses without the express written consent of NC Interactive. A “commercial use” by a Member would be any use for which a Member receives monetary value, including but not limited to payment of fees to the Member by others."

Yes and no. Legally, I think that powerlevelers could get around this intent by simply having one Game Contract issued to one person. If the powerleveler and the customer use the account at different times, the two could claim that they are simply giving the contract over to the other.
And the stuff about not being able to see the graphics/code/ect. apply to people who use parts of their code in commercial games, or take characters and make commercial comic books with them. Nothing about powerleveling, but a lawyer might be able to argue the point that it does.

It picks up on things like books, games ect.. however I have just emailed NCSoft about their position on the powerleveling services to be certain. If I was to interpret the terms of service then any money made from the game is illegal unless it goes to NCsoft and Cryptic. But I'll see what they say.
The links which pop up selling accounts is illegal though I know that much for certain.

are you seeing them right now?? i haven't seen them up on the site for a while... i'm just wondering why i can't see them (i tried logging out to see if it was b/c i was site mgr, but i still didn't see the links) i know the ones you are talking about, i've seen them b/f on the site, i just hadn't seen them recently... and you are correct it is all illegal, you aren't supposed to make any kind of monitary gain from coh at all, including powerlvling services... please let me know what they email back to you, i'm very curious about this

thejeni, are you using Firefox? You can block certain ads with different plug-ins for Firefox, so that may explain why you are not seeing it. The ads are certainly there. I hope that these ads are illegal, I know they are immoral and unethical. Even if they do not violate the letter of the law, they certainly violate the spirit.
Why is it most internet advertisements are for viagra & other adult products or for cheating the system. Great stuff we are teaching our kids.
Ahh, well. Life goes on. Do your best to run the site as honorably as you can. We appreciate the effort, even if you can not get it perfect.

I think a lot of firewalls will block those. When I'm on from home, I see the ads. When I'm on from work, I don't. This is the same computer, but when I'm on from home, I'm going through my Wireless router to the internet, when I'm at work, I'm going through a highly monitored Proxy server (I work for a bank).

ok i got word from nogame and he said, "The advertisements on the right hand banner are random, we also do not control what content is thrown in the 4 boxes, Google does. Though we do not encourage the use of any methods or means that these sites employ, they are determined by Google and out of our control.
Hopefully within the near future these advertising slots will be replaced with ones that we do have control over and will not feature services that some gamers consider "questionable". Until that time comes, these ads help us pay the bills on server cost."
and the browser i use mainly is Opera, but i opened the site in explore also to check to see if it was Opera, and i didn't see them either, but we do have a firewall so maybe it is making so i can't see them.

Well I got a preliminary reply from NCSoft, basically I emailed their support team and they passed it onto account administration so I guess I'll need to wait until I hear back from them.
I had a feeling that you had no control over the adverts however you do have control over which service you use for your advertising. May I suggest perhaps finding another advertising service that doesn't have any checks for illegal content.

as nogame stated as soon as we cna find someone else to advertise there we will be changing it, but from the sounds of it, it isn't that easy to find people willing to advertise right now... but nogame is almost always keeping an eye out for them, so hopefully soon it can be changed
oh and i would really like to hear what the "offical" stand point on these websites are, i've noticed there are a lot of them and have always wondered how (and why) they haven't been shut down, i feel the same way about those accounts on sale on ebay...

You know...not to sound like a jerk or anything, but if it keeps the site up, what's the problem? At least he's not using popup ads or porn ads. Vote with your feet and don't go to the sites you have an issue with.

I don;t think you're a jerk Ron. I kind of feel the same way. Yes I have a problem with people exploiting the game...I hate even more teaming with a lvl 50 that's never played the game... BUT that's saddly not something in my control.
The people that use these services are the ones losing out.
Yes the Ad's are controlled externally, and it is incredibly hard to get someone else to advertise. So if those ad's are what's keeping this site running... then well... I ignore them.
I don't apporve of the principal behind them. I don't condone the bahavior of the persons using these services... HOWEVER... there will always be someone out there trying to find a way to cheat the game.Read PL'ers... you can see them all the time... standing at the train stations... which is kind of why when the griefers get a bug up their butt about them and train some baddies to them I don't feel so bad about it... That too isn't right... cause ligitamate games might be hust as well... BUT I'm getting sick of haveing to wade through the masses of PL mob standing at the trams...if you've got a travle power and you want to bo PL'd then get somehwere that I don't have to see you.
I know that the ad's may be offensive to you... but... you have to remeber... we don't ahve any control over what these people do in game.. the only thing we can do is report the people that we know use the services (including the sites listed to our rights >>>) and let Cryptic handle it.
There's nothing as an individual... even as a small group that we are, that we can do to eliminate these sites... BUT like you said it's in the agreement... they've just done something illegal and the company that they did it to does have the right to do something about it :)
So now that I'm done ranting... keep fighting the good fight... report those people... report coppied names.. let Cryptic handle them, it's the best thing we heroes can do to help our beloved game :)

The advertisements are probably put there by the host of the web page. I doubt you can change them. As far as what they are. I don't feel it really matters. I am not likely to use them and it is someones right to choose whether they will use them or not. If its illegal, then the trouble will be theirs. Powerlvling groups get around the legal side of things by having you pay them for their time. I think its lame, cause you lose alot of the fun, but it is legal. They don't use your account, they have to set up a time for you to be on, and you just sit there. As far as exploits for CoH, I looked at that site, it is mostly AFK macros and other such stuff. I didn't see any server hacks to get into the server. As far as I am concerned as long as it ain't porn on a game site, or some other such as that, it aint gonna make much difference. Last time I checked I wasn't an angel. :-) I think we are all smart enough to make choices for ourselves.

Just to clear a few things up,
Now it is against the TOS to sell your account, such as on ebay, be that as it may it is in no way illegal. The most NCSOFT could/would do it ban the account, if not just give you a warning.
As in most online games, people are going to be selling accounts. This cant be stopped, and still happens, very much so, in games such as Star Wars Galaxies and Everquest, this has never, however, been illegal, just "not allowed" by most game developers. I myself have sold an account in the past, and in no way regret doing so. I sold the account for what I felt was a fair amount for the time I put into it. The person was paying for my time. I got a few hundred dollars, the buyer got an account he really wanted, everyone was happy.
I don’t know why you are so worried about these ads, not that you don’t have the right to be, but to take it as far as to emailing NCSoft about it is kind of strange. I wouldnt recommend using one of these powerleveling sites, as you put yourself in the risk of being scammed. However I dont see anything wrong with them if the person is just trying to help people out by running a legitimate business.
The bottom line is that these ads are selected by Google, not by us, in no way do they reflect the opinions of any of the staff here at gameamp, and are not illegal. Therefore the ads are more than appropriate for a site such as ours. Sorry if this sounds kinds of harsh, I dont mean it to be, i'm just a very opinionated person.
