Masondixon PMed me and I thought I would reply to you all because I think it is an important question that many may be wondering about.
He writes:
"How long did it take u to get all the field marshalls stuff?
R U A very successful mage? Frost/Arcane/Fire"
I am a fire elemental mage, meaning I am fire with elemental percision in the ice tree and arcane tree items as well. As for successful...well I guess that is all relative but I am one of th most saught after mages on the server alliance side and have had various guilds fight over me because I raid and pvp well, but I also take direction from the Raid Leader well. It is about not having a fat head, there are enough of those already in the game. I am also one of the top ranked mages lifetime on any server period in PvP according to Blizzard and various other websites. So sucessful? Yeah I guess I am. I have also been part of various PvP teams, not the leader just a participant, and a good PvP leader is key to getting good gear.
As for my build, I kill mobs and other players very quickly, that is the point of my spec. And even if I die, SO WILL YOU! So go ahead and attack me, kill me but your going to die if I die, because my fire dot will take you down. But on the other hand, I also have the stamina gear to take the hits if need be. At my peak I had more armor than most rogues and more hit points than a lot of hunters.
So for the last part of the question, To get my FM stuff, well I got my Lt. Commander gear in 7 weeks of grinding, but that was before the system changed. And then it took me I think about 100 hours a battlefield time for my GM weapon and the whole level 60 FM set takes about 250 hours of battlefield time. The level 70 set will probably take approximately twice that amount of time.
So I am going to guess the level 70 FM gear plus GM weapon will take approximately 600 to 800 hours of battlefield time. When I was PvPing hardcore I averaged about 1000 honor per hour, give or take it being a double honor weekend. So that is what you have to look forward to if you want the gear and to do the work. It will become your new J-O-B.
Well I hope that helps, its a lot of dedication but if it iss the gear you want then go for it.

Ahhh detication. But then the BG gear is comparable to the gear you would get if you were raiding instead. So I guess either way, if you want the best gear, you are going to have to put some time into it.

The PvP gear usually equates roughly to the Tier 1 gear(pre TBC stanadards) or first Raid set. It's a little better than the first dungeon sets you can aquire. But from what I saw the PvP gear also has better stats for PvP. That makes sense. The more you PvP and aquire that gear, the better you will be at it.
Some guilds will require that you get decent gear on your own before you start raiding with them so that you are not quite so squishy, and it also allows for a lot of players to start to learn more in depth about how to use their characters in crisis situations.
The beauty of the PvP gear is that you just have to go to the battlegrounds and sign up. You don't have to try and work yourself into a raiding guild's roster. With the new big instances capping out at 25 players, those spots are going to be a little tighter this time at the level cap range of characters.
That PvP gear is really nice. It's worth the effort to get it. You just have to get your head properly wrapped around the whole PvP mentality. Get used to dieing a lot in the beginning(That's where I'm at with it right now =P). But once you get going, that light bulb will come on and then you'll see in the instances that you run pre-raid what you have been learning about your class during PvP encounters.
Once you can manage dynamically thinking players in combat, the scripted AI of the monsters in the instances and raids makes them seem pretty stupid and manageable.

Nope, that's why it's called tier 1. There are a couple of tiers after that. If you didn't have the expansion, and could find a guild that still ran the old major raid instances, you could get up to tier 3.
The first few major instances like Scholo and Strat start dropping your tier 0 set. It's nice to start getting matching pieces, and this is when you start getting bonusses for wearing so many pieces of it. On tier 0 sets you get your first bonus for wearing 2 pieces, then 4 pieces, 6 and so on.
With the tier 1 sets, you get those from running the 40 man instance Molten Core. They start giving bonusses at 3 pieces, 6 pieces and then the complete set bonus.
There are tier 2 and 3 sets that drop pieces respectively from Black Wing Lair and then Naxx. Although there are a couple of crossover pieces from other places. The tier 2 pants drop off the last boss in Molten Core(The tier 1 instance) and the tier 2 headpiece drops off of Onyxia.
The PvP gear you can earn from honor points is about tier 1.5 respectively. But the stats you get sort of cater to the PvP ones you would want.
The big raids come with a lot of planning and drama. Many people don't like dealing with the type of competition withing the guild for the tier gear so they go after the PvP gear. Or in some cases they have declared a main for raids, but still want to equip an alt with decent gear, so they have to PvP with the alt.
Now that The Burning Crusade is out, most people are skipping tier 1-3 gear altogether. And going for the raid gear in the level 70 range. It takes a lot of time to constantly keep going back to the big raid instances to aquire the gear, and my tier 1 gear is easily outmatched by just standard blue gear from the new Burning Crusade instances. It's already 90% in storage and soon to be sold(I know I'll stop crying one of these days...... that was a LOT of work and BS to get gear that was like instantly crap when I stepped through the portal........ "You are not prepared!" ........ I really REALLY need to kill that guy)
The PvP gear is great because you don't have to affiliate yourself with a guild to go after it. You just get yourself in the queue and go hunting the opposing faction.

ACTUALLY for MAGES I would rank the gear like this:
Tier 0 - CRAP not worth your time
Tier 0.5 - still crap, there are better blues out there for 60s that you can buy on AH and get in dungeons
Tier 1 - Good starter set, I personally never used it
Lt. Commanders set - We consider this tier 1.5 - this is the PVP Blue set for mages
Tier 2 - Netherwind is good for raiding, not good for pvp
Grand Marshals Regalia - we consider this the tier 2.5, not quite tier 3, better than tier 2
Tier 3 - Frostfire, personally I never got much into it, but its okay
Dongeon 3 set - Probably wont bother getting this
Tier 4 - probably wont bother getting this either
Tier 5 - HELLZ YEAH!
Level 70 Field Marshal Set - looks promising and top rank gear for mages, BUT with this said there is a lot of new gear depending on the type of mage you will be playing so I dont know if this will be the best gear for me or any other mages out there as that I have not played with it.
Now for other classes the PvP gear does not equate quite the same BUT for mages it is DEFINATELY more than tier 1, but not tier 2, and more than tier 2 and not tier 3. Ask any hardcore raider that has had all three tier sets and PvP sets (such as myself)
Just my opinion and some other mages that I know.

I don't know if that's what Dru is saying, but if you have never done Scho, Strat and others you should try that will probably get you prepared and more experienced for the outlands dungeons and stuff. Also I think she has said that cause she has done everything and experienced everything already, but I think that for someone who hasn't done yet I would try it.
But that's just my opinion good luck to you.

let me clarify:
Your pvp set for level 60 will get you all the way up to level 70 just fine, I am still wearing my field marshal level 60 gloves at level 70, havent found any better yet, shadow labs has not been nice to me (nor have other instances thus far)
Mus is right, those instances are worth your time for drops of blue gear, which will make your questing experience in outlands much easier and more rewarding. It will also teach you the dynamics of a dungeon group more clearly and when you get to do outlands dungeons people wont get upset if you make a mistake because you will probably not make one.
I was saying the tier 0 and 0.5 dungeon was crap because IMO it is, that does not mean do NOT run the instances, that means IMO do not GRIND the instances for that gear. I find grinding them a waste of time. thats all that means.

I've got a Rogue buddy still wearing his level 60 earned PvP gear, and he's about level 66 right now. And I still actually use my tier 1 gear as my starter resistance gear until I can get a few better pieces.
I still rotate in the tier 1 stuff dependent on the fight.
The tier 0 stuff is still OK looking if just stats are not the only thing you are looking for and you can see what starting to get set bonusses for you does as a little boost.
Probably not worthwhile to go after the complete set, but if you could aquire a few pieces as you ran the instances and added them to your gear it won't hurt. The new "midlevel" instances like Scholo and Strat are still great places to learn team dynamics and bolster your friends list with good gamers.
Same goes for the PvP gear. The benifit of the PvP gear is that you earn marks/points/currency and you purchase the desired item. In the instances, the drops will be random. You might get lucky and get the chest, legs and shoes from the instances. If you are inclined to PvP, you could gather your PvP currency and purchase the shoulders, gloves, headpiece, weapons, etc...... to fill in what isn't dropping for you in the instances.
Spread the gear aquisition over a couple different aspects of the game and getting it looses a bit of that tedium.

Not to butt in, but since it seems to be in the same general venue, does anyone here have any Arena experience?
It's the main form of PvP I'm interested in when I finally hit 70 (66 Draenei Shaman...slow but steady goes the turtle totem).

Mount: you should be able to earn your 30 of each token for an epic commanders mount in one weekend no problem. I have all of them just because I had extra tokens (I had a horse before)
Arena: I dont like the arena too much becausae I was not big on dueling before hand, but with that said if you are good at dueling Arena is the place for you to be. Also if you do 5v5 and you have an awesome team you can totally PWN. I personally like the 5v5 because I pick my team and its great, but anything lower than that and I am just bait and it doesnt always work so well. I am currently plumbing about my Shaman to do 2v2 arena and we shall see how that goes. But arena is VERY team dependant and I feel also spec dependent, you should be speced for PvP combat or to support your team very well. If you are not you may have issues and loose a lot. Its all in the teamwork in the end.

PvP sets are sort of hard to get. At lvl 60 I spent 6 hours a day for three weekends and got Field Marshall and Knight Set so it isn't hard for th 60 part. The 70 I have yet to get to, but I am sure the 70 set is much harder to get especially if you want ALL of the weapons like I seem to crave over.
Check out my website at -http://slacker6.info. PM me what ya think. I am fixing something new like everyday.
