The Death of Captain America!

Yes, I could not believe it myself but read the article below.

RE: The Death of Captain America!

That's a bummer. Especially when we need a strong, positive American role model out there.

I'm not too worried though. I still have my death of Superman comic in it's black wrapper stored at the house. Cap will be back.

RE: The Death of Captain America!

Joey Q and the boys at Marvel strike again! I just don't know about this whole thing he's got going on in Stan Lee's "house of ideas" but the board of directors must agree. I used to be a Marvel nut back in the 80's-early 2000's but year after year my title list has dwindled to just 2 Marvel titles...now just one I guess, lol.

I think the thing that has turned me off the most about Joey Q's reign is his whole "if the books are good people will wait for them" line. I had to wait over a year in between issues of Daredevil "Father" and after all that wait...I had to re-read the issues before it to remember what was going on.

I know that DC "killed" Superman and 6 months later brought him back, but Marvel has killed off Thor and Hawkeye and they still aren't back. Oh well I guess I'm just not "hip" enough to understand what Joey's doin to the Marvel Universe.

It used to be Make Mine Marvel! now it's just Make meh Marvel...

RE: The Death of Captain America!

Just searched some on it and they said that it is all a part of the Marvel Civil War where superheors had to reveal their identity to the public. Spider-Man did and Captain America was refusing too and was taken to federal court. So, on the way in "Bam", he takes one.

Bad part about Marvel is when someone dies in the comics, well at least lately, they are gone.

Deadman, I feel the same way. I don't care what the numbers say, Marvel has really gone down, quality-wise, under quesada. It seems all they can do now is go for shock value instead of just telling good stories. Also, using the comic medium as a bully pulpit to espouse your political views is a huge turn off to me. Killing Captain America is a not very subtle statement.

I used to love Marvel. In the late 80s and early 90s, I was a Marvel-over-DC sort of guy. Then they killed off half the original New Mutants. I slowly moved over to the DC side. After the events of House of M, I stopped reading Marvel entirely.

Marvel sucks these days.

Sadly I've been out of the comic collection hobby for quite a few years now but WHAT!

They killed off Thor!? That just ain't right I tell ya. I guess I'm glad to not be collecting any longer. Sounds like Marvel is going to hell in a handbasket. Granted when I quit collecting, I had been thinking of cutting most of my collected series and switching to the new Dark Horse comics(Thats right, I quit collecting when Dark Horse was NEW. I am that old :P)

And yes, I too think that killing Cap off right now was a pretty rude statement.

There are some comic heroes that are icons of the entire concept. He should have had a better retirement than that. Going down fighting the good fight or something. Lost in another dimension saving the world. You know, a fitting hero's demise.

RE: The Death of Captain America!

My guess is that someone will step up to take the mantle of Captain America to fight against the whole "identity revelation" thing.

Although I haven't read an Avengers-line book in a REAL long time, I have been sorta keeping up with the X-Books of late. I really like the new Excalibur...but I digress.

Steve "Captain America" Rogers will probably stay dead (assuming I'm even close to right here), but I suspect another (or possibly others) will take his place.

OK, I do like Ron's possible solution. And it does make sense in a comic book concept story line.

RE: The Death of Captain America!

SPOILER

He's not dead. Shot - yes, multiple times even, but not dead. And guess what, not going to die either. The current writer (Ed Brubaker) is brilliant and is using the awful Civil War story arc to kinda jump start ol' Cap. Steve Rogers isn't going to die, although someone else may just don the costume for a time. Brubaker said in an interview little while back that Steve Rogers is not going to die.

RE: The Death of Captain America!

P.S.

SPOILER AGAIN!!!!

If you didn't read Civil War, in the 7th issue, Punisher wipes out some baddies who were going to help Cap's side, and Cap kicks the shit out of him for it. Cap starts yelling at Castle to fight back, and Castle only replies "Not against you." At the end of the big battle between the pro-government registration types and Cap's team, Cap arrests himself because of the destruction they caused, and takes off his mask to be arrested as "Steve Rodgers, not Captain America." The next shot is of Castle picking up Cap's mask and leaving with it. I can only hope and pray that Castle dons the mask and goes total war on everyone as Cap :) But I am kinda a sick freak for Punisher.

Well I guess you just have to take what they give us and vote with our wallets. I started Collecting as a kid and still have most of them ( bet I should get a price guide and go through those 10+, 3 stack boxes of Mid 70's to late 80's Marvel and see what I have ). Stopped collecting when all of a sudden EVERYONE had to have a DARK SIDE, or be an ANTI-HERO. There was really nothing wrong with Actual heroic/noble heroes, the writers just got bored. Cap is just the latest victim, and frankly I'm suprised they were able to resist the urge for so long. He is a hero created for the world of the 1940's, Noble to a fault, the exact opposite of what the SUITS, in their infinite wisdom, think we want to see. If Captain America dies, it won't have been from a bullet, Spawn, Wolverine, The Punisher and Heroes of their type will have been responsible. There just doesn't seem to be a place left for him in the Marvel Universe, too bad.

Yes, Thor is dead and so is Odin...This is definitely when I left comics altogether. This was the main reason i collected was to read Thor. The X titles were good, just too darned many of them.

But on the Cap tip, if everyone remembers, it's not that hard to fill the shoes of Cap. They did it before when they stripped him of his costume and title and gave it to some other guy. So, I guess this is the age of removing what's good and replacing it with whatever the hot thing of the day is...

RE: The Death of Captain America!

So, I went to my local shop and picked up this weeks books and of course there was Cap #25 front and center in my pile. I got home and read it 1st, now I know there are always ways around what we see in the books like the use of "off screen happenings" but when I saw the shot that took Cap down I just don't think there's anyway to get around this neatly.

Ok so here's the Marvel geek content, unless Cap was a S.H.I.E.L.D LMD (Life Model Decoy) I don't think even he could survive this shot. The bullet was from a snipers rifle and penetrated the back of his neck and exited the front of his throat, so he bled out pretty quickly. That being said, there might be the possibility that the super soldier serum has given Cap a Wolverine like healing factor that niether he nor anyone else would have known of. Of course this being the Marvel Universe anything is possible.

It was a little more than sad to see him go out like this though, in handcuffs and bleeding out, I only hope Marvel makes this right in the future.

I agree. This is one of the reasons why I don't really collect comics, is that EVERYONE seems to have to be the "tough-as-nails" anti-hero that has a bad past, hates all conventions, and doesn't seem to have the strongest of consciences. They're all out for some kinda revenge, or acting out from a violent past, or something like that.
I don't mind them here or there, heck, some teams need that kind of variety, but seriously...There doesn't seem to be many just good, decent, normal guys with every advantage in life (and would therefore have more to lose) that want to help people out of sheer goodness of heart and nobility.

Like Marine, it's not that I dislike that type of character, but one of the reasons I find them cool is because they AREN'T the norm. When you think about it, having them as the norm defeats the purpose of them being that way in the first place.

Basically, this is how I see them:
It's like the emo kids of the good ol' high school days. The "nobody understands me so I'm gonna be different and lash out" mentality only works if you actually ARE different and misunderstood. But if there's people like that all over the place, not only does it make that mentality void, but it makes everyone around them really annoyed rather then sympathetic, because at that point it's pretty much just over-reacting.
The whole "let's be different/alone together" thing doesn't really cut it.

I learned to read on Marvel comics about 40 years ago. My father introduced them to me and I loved them ever since. Then along came Quesada... Since this guy has become EiC it';s been all down hill. No Thor comic for what, 3 years now? that horrendous Avengers Dissassembled and New Avengers crap? Now the biggest blemish on the companies entire existence, Civil War? Written by a guy who so obviously loathes this country. Now the icing on the cake is the death of Captain America??? Quesada sucks. His image if Marvel resembles a small independent comic company. I miss Shooters Marvel as well as even DeFalco's. This one is just a mess.

RE: The Death of Captain America!

Oh good Grief Charlie Brown!!! Is this Marvels way of dragging its readers back? Is this how they are going to repair the Marvel world after this whole "Civil War" Amongst the heroes? When I last checked, Superman died too, but for some reason, he and Tupac just can't stay dead. So, its a gimmick, Cap will be back and swinging his shield in no time. I mean come on, look how many Marvel characters have died and comeback? Exactly!!!

RE: The Death of Captain America!

Anyone else wondering if Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, is going to get his in the end? I mean, Cap at least fought for a what he believed to be right, Stark on the other hand betrayed everyone to get what he wanted and to prove he was right. I don't care if it was to get an escape proof prison so super villians can be kept locked up for good, it was not worth the friendship of those that trusted you.

Hey I think I just have an idea how he gets it.
