firstly let me just say Welcome to Gameamp!
and imo it might possibly be your graphics card or processor which is straining to play it for the time you manage to play until it shuts off
*also sorry about my spelling it sucks >.<*

this could be very possible. however, ive been playing for 10 months on this laptop and it hasnt given me problems until lately. Any other possiblities? someone i know said it might be a virus, but its only when i play guild wars. any idea how to check?? thanx for feedback!

could be the cooling since a laptop doesn't have a lot of space between components is easy to over heat it it could be that it shuts down to protect it rom burning some parts :S
just a thought thou
edit: some ppl have been have probs since the nightfall release due to the better graphics of elona ....;

I would definitly check your cooling, I had a friend who's laptop had the same issue, it was burning up - he just opened it up, dusted, and it worked afterwards perfectly. Just see if your laptop's overheating.

You might want to try clean booting it before running the game. that way you can free up some system resources.
Could also be a Burned out capacitor on the mother board.

i know this might seem simple but check ya battery power settings as sometimes that can be affecting how your laptop is running and might be causin uneeded overheatings (im able to change nearly everythin on my laptop for example fan speed, cpu speed etc

Welcome to Gameamp.
I used to have the problem with guild wars freezing my comp every once in awhile, but that was because I had the wrong driver for my graphics card, which probably isn't the problem for you. Also, there is a specific place in NF where my graphics card would decide to crap out, Wehan Terrace I think. But I think if that was your problem, you would have mentioned it. So I probably can't help.

I too use a laptop and have this exact same problem except mine only happens in certain areas. Whislt trying to load aury rock after running elona reach i have a 50% chance of my screen going completley back and my computer freezing. This also ocurs whilst loading Kaneing City and other over populated areas. It is extremley annoying especially when running elona.
Good luck trying to fix the problem :).

I have to agree with all the people ahead of me who said cooling was your issue. Laptops do not cool well under normal loads let alone under a high demand one that GW creates. Try cleaning out your laptop, lowering proc/graphic strain on system by bringing settings down, and also make sure your comp is in a non-confined area.

first of all, THANK YOU everyone who posted their thoughts. I really appreciate the imput and personally love the community here. I am experiencing this problem after system checks and what not. I think im gonna just take it apart and blow it out as suggested, see what happens, and if that doesnt work idk. Can you buy upgraded cooling units for a craptop? let me know if its possible, cause i def will if so. Thanx again for all the feedback, you guys/gurls are great!

My old computer did this, it would stay on for like 5-10 minutes before turning off.
Finally decided to spend money to get a guy to come over, it turns out it was overheating.

I had the same problem with a laptop once. It was past its warranty, so i just decided to have a look inside. I opened it and found A LOT of dust in there. I scooped that out and gave it a bit of a clean, and hey-presto, IT WORKED. I'm not saying this is the best thing to do, especially if it still in its warranty, but it worked for me.

I agree that it could very well be a cooling problem. Especially if you're running a Centrino...those things tend to freak out if they've been at a decent temp for too long.

Some things may be the cause, but i dont know:
1. PLUG IT INTO AN OUTLET! Nothing worse trying to play GW on battery power alone.
2. Is ur Laptop "shared video"?
3. Do you have enough memory available to play?
4. are you running anti-virus programs while playing?
5. definitely overheating issue? sure could be it.
2-4 mean that you may need more memory. i noticed on my laptop, my power cord gets darn hot while playing. also, if u seem to be lacking memory, the laptop (in my case) will use extra memory to keep the game running, thus draining the batteries lower...faster. Shared video sux for this game. got to get a video card, which you need to get a more expensive one like alienware or dell xps system.
I have GW on both my laptop and on my desktop, to always stay in the loop at home and work and school. but some laptops cant handle it.

Its quite common for a computer to restart during guild wars play ( giving the fondly known blue screen of death ).
This is due to badly written graphics drivers, if this is the case you'll need to download an earlier version.
If by shutdown you do mean Shutdown, then im not sure, could be a hardware fault, i don't usually see this .
As you say its happening in guild wars its not likely to be a power problem becauseit would occur when u do anything else.
Maybe over heating, try turning your graphics down to minimum.
Any low level experts here? I think shutdown is caused by a reverse voltage being applied to the transistor that is the power gateway, caused by CPU opcode? [/B]
As to your question you can get like a metal grid with fans in that cools it, I wouldn't reccommend taking your laptop apart , not because you might damage it, but because the screws are darn near impossible to get out!

there's a little utility called mother board monitor (mbm), its free and relativly easy to set up, do a google for it and install it, generally all you need to do is know what hardware ou have which you can check by looking in your system properties in control panel. once you've got it running, run gw in windowed mode and watch the temp displays on mbm, that will give you a godd idea if its over heating, above 60/70 c is bad.
and get a can of compressed air to get rid off dust, its the most reliable method.
