| Choppiness in Tournament mode :( |
|
|
|
Hello,
This is really bad. UTComp 1.5a runs very well until all players hit "ready" and match starts. Server runs smooth as well in warmup mode. Once we start playing match, game runs very choppy. Actually it's hard to notice in many gametype except for LowG where you have to spend more time in air than in other modes. :)
There's no lag, CPU usage on server side is not higher than 10%. I tried to turn off all mods and mutators and it's all the same. Regardless number of players or bots. Autodemo recording is off on server side. I double checked that.
Will anyboy explain me what the hell UTComp is doing during the match? Why did you mess with tickrate functions?
Here's a snippet from UT2004.ini with UTComp settings:
[utcompv15a.MutUTComp]

bEnableBrightskinsVoting=False
bEnableHitsoundsVoting=False
bEnableWarmupVoting=False

bEnableScoreboard=True
bEnableWarmup=True

If your tickrate is changing when the match starts, you are starting a demo. Tickrate on servers goes to the demorec tickrate when a demo starts. (Yes i know you said you have it off)
Other than that, I can't really offer you any advice and you'll have to try figuring out the problem for yourself.

Good idea. I'm gonna try to play with different tickrate settings for demo too.
Though if it was a case, then demo tickrate was very low. However it's really strange. If tickrate was low, then we all would see ping increase and lag. And why does it switch to demo tickrate even if autodemo is off?

double check in webadmin if demorecspectator is in there or not
choppiness can also result from too high of a tickrate.

It's definitely a bug or misconfiguration. Where!? Why the hell UTComp messes with the game every tick!? Are developers practicing with UT scripts and replications on us?
....
ok, just experimented with different servers and different server settings.
First, this choppiness occures only when warmup mode is on.
Regular tournament mode ("players must be read" server setting) works fine even when UTComp is on. Tickrate does not affect this. As well as demorec. I tried to turn it on and off and it did not create problems.
I tried 3 different servers (all of them are Linux based, 2.4 and 2.6 kernels), one of them was P4 3.2Hz, 2G and my home computer AMD Athlon64 3200 512M. You have to agree that those boxes are powerful enough to run CTF IG server with 1 player. :)
I did not notice lag, CPU and RAM usage has never been of a problem.
I witnessed the same problem when game switches from warmup to tournament. It's easier to notice it if you run server with LowG. No other mutators were running!
PLEASE, FIX IT!
I'm really tired ot UT Comp and its bugs. By some freaking reason our ladder requires it for matches. :(

This is most likely a misconfiguration on your server and not something inherent to UTComp. I run several servers with UTComp (on Linux 2.4 and 2.6) and I have no problem.
My suggestion is to go back to a default configuration and change settings/mutators one by one with testing in between to see where the problem arise.

Servers are pretty much standard. Like I said, UTComp is running fine unless you use warmup mode and switch to tournament from there. Servers are pretty much standard, I don't run anything besides UT Comp, I even removed AntiTCC for experiment sake.

Still my servers are just fine with warmup enabled and they are nowhere near your machines in terms of processing power.
BTW, is "tournament" referring to the new duelmode? That I haven't played around with much. Could be an issue there. I'll try to check it out when I can.

No. Tournament starts when all players click "ready". Before that moment everything is running fine.
How to reproduce.
Remove all mutators except for Instagib, LowGrav and UTComp. Turn off everything in UTComp except for warmup mode. Warm up time = 0. In game rules set "Players must be ready".
You can keep bots if you want to test it alone (number of players does not change anything). Start game session on simple map like Thorns for instance. Jump around. Everything should be fine.
Now click F5 -> Ready. Tournament mode starts.
Double dodge and jump. You'll see a lof of chopiness. And like I said, no lag, CPU usage is normal, server side demo recording mode is off.
I believe it's not so noticeable in Onslaught, regular gravity etc. But in lowg this problem is evident.
Turn off warmup (UTComp may be kept on) and keep all other settings intact. Restart map. Join server and click to start tournament mode again. No chopiness whatsoever.
Tested on 3 computers. All of them are Linux boxes. Plenty of CPU power. Tried standard and tweaked tickrates. Patch 3339. UTComp 1.5 and 1.5a. Both have the same bug. I really doubt now that server were misconfigured. Should I dance around boxes with ritual tambourines to make UTComp work properly? :)
Will anyboy explain me how warmup affects server ticks? Hello developers?
Another question should be addressed to ladders admins who found idea of making UTComp as mandatory mutator a good idea. :(

I see what you mean. There is decidedly something strange going on here but I doubt it is tickrate related. At least on my system the tickrate remains the same all the time (I have the same tickrate set across the board). Use 'inject userflag 1' to see the tickrate, it's the 'R=' value, 'inject userflag 0' to turn it off again.

I did not mean changes in tickrate value. Sometimes mod developers use UT server (or client) tick to fire their own hooks. Basically it's a bad habit and generally should be avoided, because it reduces server performance and potentially dangerous for game consistency. If it's a case with UTComp, then no wonder why tournament mode works like this.
ok, my final investigation. Looks like UTComp conflicts with LowGrav mutator. And it happens only in tournament mode after warmup! I did many tests with lowgrav and without it and found that chopiness occures only in lowgrav. :(

I went and did a little testing on this....
This is a bug with restarting rounds and low grav.
The exact same thing will occur in onslaught or assault on the start of a new round(without utcomp) when using MutLowGrav.
I'll fix it in utcomp if there is ever another version.

yeah, just turn off warmup to get around this for now...tbh, i've been around some iCTF servers with UTComp, and warmup isn't really needed :)
