elementalist, b/c of the gylphs. the glyphs can let u cast faster, and make some spells free of energy. mesmer allows you to use echo[E], and do other things.

Both are good choices for energy management reasons. Ele has Glyph of lesser energy for some really nice management, and Mes has things like channeling which is pure energy manangement, but also utility skills such as Inspired Hex and the various Mantra's, such as Mantra of Resolve which is great when you don't want to be interupted.

I cast a Mo/Me vote for you. There are only a couple good glyphs for E, and a whole line of Inspiration skills for Me. Once you ascend (gotten pretty far through the game), you'll be able to change your secondary profession. At that point switch to ele and buy the couple useful glyph skills.
PS - for a Mo/Me, you probably won't be using echo skills much. The instant-recharge elite E glyph combined with divine spirit is nice. The lesser energy glyph is nice now that it effects the next two spells instead of one. In the earth line kinetic armor can be useful though tedious to maintain. But the inspiration line has many more useful skills for a Mo primary in my opinion.

wel reli its what YOU want!
i would recommend 1 of 3 professions: WARRIOR MESMER or RANGER
WARRIOR: this is if you want to still be in the heat of the battle, and still help team mates, you have to be wary though, as u may get sum unfriendlies or may die yourself.
NOTE: this is also good with smiting skills
MESMER: this is if you want to be a hexer to deal damage and still be a healer, this can surprise enemies well. this also works for energy saving.
RANGER: this is for those of you who like to still be in on the offensive, without directly attacking by using a pet, i actually have a monk like this, i have a pet bear as it is the most offensive of the pets, and i am a protection monk. i also have an elswyths recurve which i find very useful.
hope this helps!!!! ( + cred plz if u find it useful!!)
thanks! gary

I've tried Mo/R and had some dodgy results. Pets are a bad bad bad bad bad idea if you're Heal or Prot, they die and you're out of commission for ... how long is it again? ... too long anyway! If you're Smiting you can bounce spells off your pet, using it as a tank which can be fun. I think I'd rather stick with the energy of a staff tho.
FYI - The Bear has the slowest attack rate and Brutal Mauling does no extra damage apparently...shame.
You can use the Ranger Defensive skills if they're tied to WS but then I find Guardian is better since it's spamable.
I'd go Mo/Me if only for Inspired Hex and once you get used to playing a Monk all the other energy management stuff comes as a bonus.
Anyway...you can swap once you're ascended ;)

If you are planning on smiting, it doesn't really matter what you do, any of the classes can help you out in some way. When it comes to healing and protecting, you really want to be focusing just on that. If you try to bring some damage skills also, you will be spreading yourself to thin. Basically it's just a bad idea for a monk. And I have to agree with Keo, having a pet is a very bad idea. Sure, it might be fun, but it takes two skills out of your skill bar, and you are out for a full 10 seconds if you're pet dies. Obviously, as the healer you can keep your pet alive, but your time and energy are better spent keeping your party alive. I wouldn't appreciate it much if I saw a monk with a pet, or trying to help out with the damaging. It's just not their/our place.

in pve i would go with ele. Glyph of lesser is extremely useful you dont need to invest any points in it so you can focus on your monk spells and it has better energy management than just about every other non elite spell (asuming you use it with 10+energy skills).
