Who thinks webcams should be permentantly destroyed and anybody who uses them eaten by charr?
The software is so stupidly programmed because it sends pictures in the MB size 2-3 times a second , which instantly gives you 1000-2000 ping.
Not only are they the bane of the gamer, in some browsers the connections will time out because of the ping.
This is a problem if you have a brother or sister that you cant
kick for disobeying you!!!!

Lol i made him turn it off now, he admits half the problem is hes got Utorrent ....
Lets add that to the list of banned things :S .
Lime-wire much better program.

Hmmm...I have a really bad connection and I have no trouble playing and using a webcam. The problem is more likely his downloads than anything.
Try limiting his download clients bandwidth.

ultimate way to make bandwidth fair.....find out your max bandwidth(both upload and download). Divide the max bandwidth equally among all the computers on the network. Install NetLimiter on all the computers on the network. Set each computer to use their fair share of the bandwidth....sure it might slow yours down at times, but it makes it fair for when you are all using it.

Its not nessicarlily a bandwidth issue. Yes the main problem is the torrent client but it is because of the massive amount of connections it will created to download and upload any particular file. All home routers just dont have the capacity to keep up with all the connections so if you really want to speed up your ping limit the amount of connections per torrent, or torrents, and then if you need to limit your bandwidth. If you only limit the bandwidth then it will still try to create all those connections and you will only see a moderate increase in your speed. Or you could always get a comercial router ;-)
UGH..... Limewire.... Lime wire is great if you like malware, spyware, and viruses..

no need to ban anything, just learn some traffic shaping, and apply it :) then he can download and webcam as much as he wants, and it wont affect you the slightest bit. :) cheers

Sure in theory that works but like i said torrent clients try to create a large amount of connections per torrent overloading home routers. In theory if you set traffic prioritys everything should pass in due time. Problem is that if you overload a router the priority means less. Say you have 10 torrents running and each is making 10 connection (which is rather low if you have it set to unlimited) thats 100 connections trying to pass simultaniously. Then dump a webcam on there, which sounds like his is a bandwidth hog, and a online game both of which need a cetrain QoS to run right and therefore by default will take priority in routing (also depending on how old your router is). Even if you have a large pipe your router needs to recieve each packet read the headders assign priority, the route accordingly. This operation can be very processor intensive. A home router does not have a whole lot of computing power or memory. Pluse you will most like saturate your connection at 50-75% max speed further complicting you mess because of overhead and, depending on network quality, dropped packets causing the need for requests for repeated packets and then the repeated packet. A torrent track while a wonderful file sharing program creates a TON of packets and alot of overhead. When the router gets overloaded it will start to drop packets.
Also a more minor concern you have to remeber is the demands on your PC. As long as you have a P4 with 512 RAM you should be OK but that is the minimum these days.

Why ban awesome gadgets when you can just ban siblings from computers?
Throw some bad shiz in their history and rat them out :D. Just don't get caugh or it'll backfire xD.
I want to try a trick I made up where you take scotch tape and cut it enough to block the ethernet cable from working but so that it's not noticable unless you inspect it xD.
Then I remember (I think) there is a way to allocate more bandwidth to your computer using the router... assuming you can get into it and assuming no one else knows how to do it xD.
Since my roommates play FF11 (there is two of them they play together) and have Xbox live running at the same time I get rocked for bandwidth and at times they make Guild wars lag (at times I mean all the time xD)
So to get them back I open about 4 torrents. They have literally come upstaires and ask if anyone is downloading stuff and the ask them to stop because all they ever do is play FF11. There are 5 people in my house xD. I also get the
"your music is echoing downstaires could you turn it down?"
a lot as well.. I pull the turning it down then making it get progressively louder until it's back up to it's last volume lol xD.

Lol thanks for the great advice as usual .
Bandwidth limiters are a good idea, my brother is good at spotting things on his pc when i change them, eg in the system tray, I once made a copy batch file on a usb that put a server on his pc and made the registry entry so it loaded on startup.
I did this on haloween and said there was a hacker called the haloween hacker that was on the news, and i made his screen shake and flicker and play ghost noises, after about 2 hours he figured out it was me and wall well annoyed xD .
The problem is he has the idea that if you turn off the uploads then you cant download, ok fair enough, but he had about 3 downloads going this morning, about 10 uploads for each thing he was downloading, all set to about 25 kbps.
Turned this down to about 10 and had no lagging problems when i turned my pc on.
Although today my left click on my mouse stopped working properly so i took it apart, and managed to fix it by testing how it worked with a screwdriver to conduct the electricity , weird.

or just acess your router and remove all his internet acess (muhahahahhaa)

Cant find the button to remove his internet access, complicated :( .
I can turn the DNS server off which will break it for him but he will just be annoyed and tell mummy.

ah yes...siblings fighting over the internet. takes me back...
completely cutting his internet would be a bit unfair. i'm pretty sure your router should have an option to limit the max connections for each pc without needing to install some software to each of them. about 40 or less connections per pc are to do. what router do you have?
best thing to do is move out and get your own damn internet :P...your parents might not approve of that though.

Ive got a cable and wireless modem router with wireless in it,
pretty good router, but I cant find anything that says max connections or max routes per ip/mac , don't think it supports it.

When my sister was hogging the bandwidth, I did the only logical thing I could. Opened her router and switched a few things.
I'm guessing it shouldn't be too hard with a webcam, give it a shot ;-)

i need the make and model of the router...maybe i can research on some online manuals/specs and see for myself if it has that option or not.
gonna also research on some connections limiting software. i'll reply if i find something.

Cable n Wireless doesn't seem to be big on the web support, nore could i find anything on limiting your max connects so i'll just take your word for it. >.<
could'nt find max connections software either. only stuff for SQL and FTP servers. not for personal users. >.<
best thing i can come with is tell your brother to lower the max connects Utorrent itself has. i'm very sure it has that option, all bit torrent clients should...
sorry i couldn't come up with something better. -.-
