which build is better?

I don't get how the R/E one works but I've used the R/* one and it works well.

Um, if I am correct, it's the Rotwing Recurve bow, in which case you don't want to use that at all. A flatbow or Longbow is what you want. Personally, I'd think the R/E build would work better. Many times I've gotten screwed over because I accidentally spawn the life pods and then I can't kill anything. I might have to give that a shot.

Well, it would sort of help to know what's going wrong for you. Are you even making it to the behemoths? If you are, are you not able to kill them because you pop the life pods? There are plenty of things that could be going wrong, we can't help until we know.

ok the run goes smooth...when i get there i start to creep forward until the spiders pop out...then thye kill me...i have my stances up and im hitting them with poison...but they stsill kill me...am i supposed to kill them or run by them

In my experience the R/* build works just fine. Do you have troubles getting there or actually killing the Behemoths?
I'm going to assume that you're able to get there.
Once you spot a Behemoth make sure you a longbow equipped and are preferably on higher ground then your target to get the range bonus. Then hit Apply Poison and start chipping away at your target. (You might have to re-apply Poison once or twice).
Once the Root Behemoth is dead, VERY SLOWLY approach its corpse and keep an eye out for the Life Pods. You want to lure them one at a time if you can. Say you have one, hit Kindle Arrows and start hitting them. Once they loose about 1/4 of their health, they will start healing themselves. Interupt them with Distracting Shot (if it hits it will disable the healing skill for 20 secs). You might want to switch to a different bow once you're fighting the Life Pods.
Then rinse and repeat the last Paragraph for each Life Pod. If you happen to aggro 2 of them, you can still kill them both it just takes a touch longer. However if you manage to aggro all three (sometimes there are 3) then your kinda screwed.

I think you are meant to run by them (though I take enjoyment in killing them - but thats slows things down).
If I was you just run past them.

You just run past all the spiders. Don't look back just speed right through all of them. Use your first stance and run in, then second stance as the first one just expires and then the third one. By that time you should have the first one recharged and rdy to go again.
If you become crippled, just keep trucking. It usually doens't last long.
If you find your health is getting low, try to find a spot where you can apply Troll Ungent.
In the end it takes a few tries but if you just keep going and pushing forward you'll make it....just don't ever stop (unless you really have to :)

You don't need to kill the spiders, check out that page on guildwiki. You run past first a ton of spiders, then a bunch of trolls, then some scale, and then you get to the Root Behemoths. Only these behemoths drop totem axes, so there isn't really any point in killing any of the other enemies.

I'm new to green farming and the Totem axe is a ok run for me but i have found a Ranger farm on wiki where you let your pet do the killing. Its Chkkr Thousand Tail for his flatbow. The run takes 3 mins max and last time i went he droped 9 bows in about a hour.{then he was out of loot} They sold for 8 to 10k. I'm uploading a video now on youtube for the run that i just made. When its finshed i'll post the link here. If anyone wants to do it i will be glad to show you.

But if anyone wants to do the Ranger totem axe farm and ur having trouble just let me know. I have it down and will teach you. I take no Credit for the build. I know theres a better build but this is fun for me. {putting ur pet to work}
