Improving Frames Per Second......

Amp

Is there a way to improve fps? Whenever I play Guild Wars I have low fps. With my old graphics card (Radeon 9250 128mb), I averaged around 8fps. With my new card that I just installed today (Radeon x1300 256mb), my fps dropped to a consistent 5fps. And now I seem to have a 2 second lag from my computer to game control.

My pc specs are as followed;
Windows XP SP2
Intel Celeron 2.4GHz
1024MB PC3200 SD DDR RAM
Radeon X1300 256MB

Is there anything that I can do to improve the fps or "lag" issue I am having?

Studies show that 92% of teens listen to rap. If you are part of the 8% that listens to real music the add this to your signature.

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

I'm surprised you're getting so low fps with a noice card. what I would do, is first turn off wait for vertical sync. Second, try lowering your graphic settings, one at a time if you're anal like me. if that doesn't do anything, try closing other running program when playing guild wars.

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

Very odd...I used to run a Radeon 9200 SE (256MB), and even with mediocere settings, I got over 20 FPS in the worst spots.

Try lowering them, if it still happens, I dunno whats causing it.

I have an X1600 Pro 256MB, and if I'm in windowed mode, and enable anti-aliasing, I get between 0 and 5 FPS until I disable anti-aliasing.

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

Put in 2 gigs of RAM. That will solve a lot of FPS issues. Also using a 64-bit processor will improve the FPS.
As for working with the system you have; set things like antialis to 2 or even 0

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

Firstly Kanna, Celeron processors are notoriously bad for gaming, as are ATi x300/x1300 cards :( they're more suited to less powerful jobs. Upgrading to 2 gigs of RAM may help a little, but I believe you'd get much more of a performance increase by investing in a new Card and/or CPU.

But if you're working with what you got, there are a few things you can try.

-Disable Anti-Aliasing

-Ensure VSync is turned off

-Disable all lighting effects etc. This can make alot of difference.

-Lower your resolution to 1024 x 768 or even 800 x 600

-Turn your shaders down to low quality

-Turn your textures down to medium/low quality.

Basically just lower everything and see how it goes! Granted it may look fugly as hell, but sacrifices have to be made sometimes :(

I agree, i run on a GeForce 7950 GX2 and i have everything on low just so that it runs smooth. It's not rlly necesarry but i find it rather usefull =).

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

dunno if this will solve ur problem.. .
its not always the graphic cards you should also consider to take a look at ur monitors refresh rate.

also just adding a new graphic card might not be enough and you also might consider some other upgrades.

my advice: go see an expert in a specialized computer shop
they should be able to help you

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

Ouch. I have the same exact card, too.

I got it for a really afordable price. But I get about 35-45 FPS playing at 1600 x 1200 resolution. I run it on a XP 64-bit (3.0GHz) with 1GB DDR, AGP board only. Budget blown to go PCIe. :-(

Have you tried checking on the background processes that are running? Latest drivers for sound, video, and directx?

Also, try setting your sound quality to a lower setting.

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

A good fps is 50 plus, some zones may lower your fps due to the intensity of them on your card. I use a nVidia GeForce Go7600 and my FPS (everything on max, anti-aliasing on x4) averaging 53 (just over, yay!). Lowering your graphics settings is the easiest way, as it making the screen smaller (eg, using 600x800 instead of 1240x1028).

If you have some spare cash, you could upgrade your graphics card and see how beautiful the game really is (The splashing of the water hitting the rocky shore spraying people, beautiful).

Uh ok this is just wrong, your computer should be able to run it at a decent frame rate.
First thing I noticed is that you said "With my new card that I just installed today".
How did you install it? Did you change any BIOS setting to accomodate that new card? Older versions could do with a 2x ratio setting, newer run at least on a 4x
Did you properly uninstall the former card within Windows (I recommend using "catuninst", a utility from ATI)? If you simply shoved the new one "over" its sibbling driver-wise, you definitively have a conflict there.
Is the new card recognised by Windows?

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

I was having trouble with my ATi X800 so I spent £200 on a new Mobo, AMD 64 3500+ & an X1900GT.

I run at 1280x1024 with everything on @ 70 fps.

Sometimes you've just got to replace the hamster! :/

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

I'm kinda perplexed on this one. xD Just to redo everything, I uninstalled all the drivers for the card and installed the newest drivers there is for my computer.

Would Monitors have anything to do with it? On my 19" I run at 1280x1024 and I was getting between 7-20fps. On my 22" Widescreen no matter what resolution or GW graphic settings I stayed between 5-7 fps.

Though the fps has never really been a problem with me, I stayed around 5-10 on my old 9250. I have about a 2 second lag from my computer to game control. Would my computer specs really be causing that? I'm kinda broke, so I can't upgrade. xD

Do I just have to deal with what I have?

RE: Improving Frames Per Second......

Perhaps try disabling your 2nd monitor, driving 2 screens will take toll on the card.

One thing that I find causes lag like that is if I drag something off screen 2 onto screen 1 over teh top of GW...then it's jerksville. That of course is only if I play in a window.

Kill everything except for system processes and GW including all your ATi control panels as they cause me no end of trouble.

That's all I can think of right now.
