I've been playing WoW for the past two years and have grown tired of it, so, I thought I'd give Guild Wars a shot.
Well, I've always been a melee class. SAM/WAR in FFXI and Warrior in WoW, so I came to GW thinking I'd play a warrior, but once in the game, I realized just how out of place I was. The feel's so different than either FFXI or WoW. So, I did a Google of "Guild Wars forums" and found you all.
Hopefully you can give me some insight into GW and the Warrior class. I'll try and list the questions I have as of now, but if I miss something, please enlighten me.
How does the weapon system work in GW? Do I need to carry a two-hander for damage-dealing situations and a sword-shield combo for tanking?
Is the warrior's only group build a tanking build?
Assuming I am allowed to DpS, is dual-weilding possible in GW?
How does armor go in GW? Is it like FFXI where you must have a certain piece at a certain level?
If there's anything else you can help me with, I'll appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Hilton1588

-There are two types of items, a (sword/axe/wand) with a (Shield/offhand) or Staves/Hammers/Daggers. Hammers, though having the highest Damage in numbers, attack a bit slower than a sword might. For tanking, it's recommended you use a shield. But for Damage Dealing, it really doesn't matter; Sword/Axe and Shield can do just as well as a Hammer.
-Not at all, warriors can tank very well, or they can deal out very good damage.
-No dual wielding in GW. The closest you can get is Daggers, which are the primary weapons of Assassins. But you can't have two different kinds of daggers, they come as a set.
-Armor does not have anything to do with your level. You can acquire Max Armor when you're level 1, assuming you can access the area it's in.

first of all,
Welcome to Gameamp
Now for your questions,
Hammers (wich are the only 2 handed weapons) are genarely used for PvP(Player vs Player) because you can do knockdowns with it. Knockdowns aren't that effective in PvE (Player vx Enviroment) Axes and swords kinda balance out, both work great for damage and both can be used for tanking. Hammers dont go very well with tanking though.
In groups for PvE most of the time warriors wil have to role of tanking. There are some occasions were you have enough monks to heal/protect that the warriors can be damage dealers.
There isn't any Dual Wield system in guild wars, theres just Axes, Swords and Hammers, were Axes and Swords can take shields with them.
As for armor, in towns along the storyline you wil find armor crafter NPC's wich have [Armor] behind their name, You need to give them materials to make them craft armor for you. You can craft armor whenever you reach a town that has a crafter, Your level or progress in the missions/quest doesnt matter for that.

How does the weapon system work in GW? Do I need to carry a two-hander for damage-dealing situations and a sword-shield combo for tanking?
actually for warrior there is 3 weapon: axe, sword, hammer
axe and sword are one handed weapon, hammer 2 handed
when you set a build for your warrior, you choose one weapon to set your point and skill in (you can change ur build without any cost when you are in outpost )
hammer do more damage, but is slower and have knock down
Axe and sword swing at the same speed sword go for a 15-22 damage axe for 6-28 damage, axe have more ''spike skill'' than sword.
Is the warrior's only group build a tanking build?
in pve people will consider the warrior as a tank, to hold the aggro, in pvp there is no aggro and no tanking, warrior keep pressure on other team and use his weapon :)
Assuming I am allowed to DpS, is dual-weilding possible in GW?
the only dual wield in gw is assassin dagger, but it's one dagger set, so you can't have 2 different dagger at the same time. you cna also use dagger on your warrior as any other weapon you want, there is ton of funny build, the flourish sin in a good example :)
How does armor go in GW? Is it like FFXI where you must have a certain piece at a certain level?
you can buy max armor at any time any lvl you just need to have access to the town wich is easy to get :)
If there's anything else you can help me with, I'll appreciate it.

WELCOME TO GAME AMP and GW!!!
It seems they have answered all your questions, but just to add I have played both games WoW and GW, and GW is not about gear but about skills especially in PvP. But I bet you will have tons of fun playing GW!!! Good luck!

first off,Welcome to Gameamp and Guild Wars! if you point in a random direction, chances are you're pointing at a warrior but warriors are good to start off with since they have really high AL.
for the weapon system, you can't hold a normally-1 handed weapon in 2 hands (unless you use some 1337 h@x) like swords, axes, spears and shields but some items are naturally 2 handed like hammers, scythes, bows, staves and daggers. Typically 2 handed weapons deal a greater damage range but attack slower (daggers being the exception) but 1 handed-attacks faster w/less damage
and tanking is not the only things warriors do in a group even if it's the most normal use like in PvP warriors need to deal dps since *most* people are smart enough not to gang up on the tank
and armor level depends on where you get the armor for instance in Prophecies I saw a lvl 2 with max Droknar's armor in Factions you get max armor at Kaineng Center and in Nightfall at Consulate Docks (I think =/) and if you want to be showy you can get 15k armor which is always max
hope this helps if you need help my ign is alphic guardian i i^^
and sorry for hogging space I'm talkative today^^
argh you guys posted while I was typing =P

Hey their,
As everybody said 100% correct, if you mix and mingle a bith.
I just want to know which campaign you bought?
Phrofecies, Factions or Nightfall?
Because if you're gonna want a bith more indept into your Warrior, Dervish are just the thing. I'm not saying Warriors do not require brain to fight, they just require less ;-)
For Warriors I can give you one very solid tip off advice and that is: Hit 'em HARD!! And if you need any help GameAmp is here for ya mate.

As of now, I only have Prophecies. That's the original, no?
I figured I'd try it out and buy the expansions if I like it. So far it's pretty good. I just have to get the hang of it.

First off [Welcome to GameAmp second, I play as a warrior W/ME/Ele and i have to say that warrior is probably the easiest starter class. Also, it was very smart for you to get Prohpecies (the first installment of Guildwars) if you need help, my IGN is :Arabian Battle Axe
oh and for good all about information about guildwars, this site, and this one GuildWiki
have fun and if you get stuck, there are thousands of us who are willing to help! just ask around.. oh and future tip. do not get a run to droks... you get there eventually. and for a good armor set, get ascalonian when you can... it lasted me untill after i reached the fire isles. :P

well welcome to gameamp i geuss...
anyways what i wanted to say is that it is quite useless to only have 1 campaign unless you only do pve... in pvp you will miss out on a lot of skills so i would buy factions to.
not that this has anything to do with what you asked but that is not my problem... it is actually noone's problem since it is not really a problem, but i don't really care about that so i will just call it a problem.
plz clickzors, i need t3h viewz !

what do you mean no mending? mending+healing sig+frenzy=ultimate pwnage ;) j/k
I have a Warrior/Mesmer using Healing Signet, Cyclone Axe, Triple Chop,(it's Factions so Cleave or any other elite will work too), optional skill (I usually bring executioner's strike, dismember or penetrating blow) "Watch Yourself!" Physical Resistance, Elemental Resistance, and Resurrection Signet that's pretty good at staying alive as you don't lose any armor when using healing signet from the physical/elemental resistance

i played GW for about 10 months then got wow for 5 months but then quit and am back on GW again, you will find that its about the skills you have that beat others en in GW its about how well you can work with other players. Its a great game that can be challenging in parts, lvl isnt to much of a factor depending on what classes you have in your party en welcome to gameamp!
(i forgot how much i lieked my shocking signiture thing!)

| QUOTE | How does armor go in GW? Is it like FFXI where you must have a certain piece at a certain level?

Nope but more specifically +40 armor is taking half damage from anything that deals damage. -40 armor of course is then double damage. This is differnt from a Damage Multiplier which litterally takes the number and multiplies it by 2 or devides it by 2 as well. Monk, Elementalist, Mesmer and i belive ritualist have 60 armor which is considered normal damage. Assassins, Rangers, Dervishes all have 70 armor which i slightly less damage (Usually 5-10 less damage). Warriors and Paragons have the highest base armor in the game which is 80 at max.
Armor is not cumalative, as in even though each peice of armor says 80 armor it doesn't mean that the warrior has a base 400 armor. Instead each attack or spell hits a certain part of the body meaning if you had 20 armor on your chest and 80 armor on you legs theres a chance u may take only 80 damge from a spell instead of 160 or so. The Ratio is this:
1/8 chance it hits the head
3/8 chance it hits the chest
1/8 chance it hits the gloves
2/8 chance it hits the legs
1/8 chance it hits the feet
Spells can not hit the hands. (Also traps)
Shield however is different. It works as a +armor instead of base armor so instead of having 80 armor for each peice you will have 96 armor. Also any spells or skills that give armor add to teh total instead of 1 peice. This is why Sword and Axe are better for tanking, more base armor = less damage taken.
Last thing about armor is armor penetration. Warriors have a Primary attribute that no other profesion can use which is called strength. for each point that you put into it, he will have 1% armor penetration. It is currently impossible to penetrate 100% of someones armor because only 3 things can have stacking armor penetration. All others have BASE armor penetration and will take the highest number as the penetration number. The Strength attribute is BASE armor penetration along with all attacks that have armor penetration and all spells that do too. Also the blessing from balthazar is base. The Smiting Prayers skill Judges insight, the Sundering weapon mod, and the hornbow all are bonus. If you are lucky theres a chance that you can penetrate 70% of someones armor with a hornbow. (Small fact. you can't penetrate armor that isn't there. if they're armor is 0 the penetration will do nothing.)
Max armor as said before is set for each profesion. It is normally found in the big cities for the cheapest kind which is 1,500g (or 1.5k) for each peice + materials. THeres also the 15k armor but its just more flashy, it doesn't provide any more armor.
Thats everything bout armor ull ever need to know
| QUOTE | | How does the weapon system work in GW? Do I need to carry a two-hander for damage-dealing situations and a sword-shield combo for tanking? |
No, infact pick a weapon and stick with it because your attributes are based on how much you put into them. WHen you have all your attribute ponits unlocked you have 200 of them. if you use mroe than one weapon you are only weakening yourself instead of getting the full potential of the weapon.
Take a breathe and get the FFXI and WoW stuff out of ur head because it completely differnt lol. Ive played both, its onluy similar in some small ways.
Also about the battle system. Its more like FFXI then WoW where you have to walk up to the enemy to kill them and then hit the button. its obviously not turn based like FF but its similar in the way that you can click a button and it will do it auto matically for u. This is where the difficult comes in. GW is about the decisions you make ina battle since you can only be lvl 20 at tops and the enemies can get up to 29 and even 32 once you unlock hard mode. You have to have a good team, weapon set, stratagy, and armor set. Sound like FF?
btw dam is that all on one comp? mine barely runs gw. I got all these screwy squares instead of graphics XD

To address a few discrepancies in the information provided.
Guild Wars works on a Primary/Secondary Profession/Skill System, which means the build options are nearly endless, provided you have the skills and classes available.
For instance, a Warrior/Assassin can use: Swords/Shields, Hammers, Axes/Shields and Daggers.
For a Spear/Shield wielding warrior, you'd need to utilise a Warrior/Paragon and take advantage of the Paragons Spear Mastery Attributes.
Remember, while you can use the weapons of other classes, you won't be using them to their maximum potential, however cross class weapon utilisation is common for many of the stronger builds.
For instance, Warrior/Dervish is a great farmer and now, in PvE due to the AI degeneration, a Scythe wielding Warrior/Dervish is a fairly deadly character, to the point where Victorious Sweep is enough for the Warrior/Dervish to survive any battle on.
Warriors and Paragons also have a seperate type of energy pool called Adrenaline, which is gathered based on connecting attacks. However, do note that while a skill may says 4 strokes of adrenaline, it may take more or less depending on the nature of the skill. Why this is, I don't know, but probably some form of skill balancing reasoning.
Two handed weapons available in the game are:
Hammers, Scythes, All Manners of Bows, Daggers (technically it's dual wielding, but you get the idea; two-hands required), All Manners of Staffs (Necromancer, Ritualist, Monks, Mesmers, Elementalists), and in ritualists case, Held Items used in skills.
Signature made by me, via Microsoft Paint. ^^
My Guide to NOT Flaming: Just give it a look. :)
I'm perfectly willing to help, however due to real life, I can't get on very often. Still and all, feel free to PM me in game or here if you need help.

Welcome young master. A tip for you si this. You might wanan start a caster along with a warrior. Sometimes people learn how to play as a tank and tank as a a casting class which is very bad. Also there are a wide variety of skills with many different uses. So this game is more skill based than grind based. I hope you enjoy guild wars!
