Repeated Topics

Does anyone else get annoyed by endless repeat threads on the same topic? Seeing people's ideas is all good and great...but after reading 3 threads on the same topic (on the same page, nevertheless), I get a little weary. Okay, you might be very happy about the new updates, we all are. I see so many repeat topics starting "This might have been posted already, but...". Did it not occur to you to check? I'm sure I'm not the only one that gets annoyed by this.

But there is a solution! Don't forget that you have two mighty tools at your disposal:
1) the scroll button
2) the search function

Simply by spending several minutes (that's for those of us who like to look at forums while doing other things, it shouldn't really take take that long) having a look at recent topic names in the forums. General Discussion is normally a good place to start. If there's a topic with a similar name to the one you want to post? Check it out, it might be appropriate to post there.

Can't find it immediately? (This happens when there's a lot of new threads, General Discussion does have quite a few pinned topics) That's where the mighty search function comes into play! Search for recent topics using the keyword of your choice, you might find it there. (Of course, that only helps if people spell things correctly. But spelling is a whole other issue, and I know we're not all native English speakers :)) This won't stop them all, granted. But it may just help us out a little.

Just to add. I don't want to stop Gameamp being the helpful forums we are known for. I'm not trying to scare people from making topics here :P but sometimes I think that spending a few minutes thinking about what you're posting could help us all...

(FYI, I did a search for "repeat" before posting this. I got the results:
"Another repeat weekend?"
"repeatable quest or glitch..."
"Repeated Skills"
"Repeatable Quest"
Clearly, not related. ^_^)

RE: Repeated Topics

I agree, it's aggravating to have 4-5 threads about the same thing. Although sometimes there are exceptions.

Adding one more thing:

If you do post a repeated thread, just add a link to the first post and ask that your topic not be bumped.

I have to say I'm quite confused where you got that impression from. ^_^ I'm not trying to "ban" anything as such...merely expressing a view I have (and one I'm reasonably sure others have) and some possible solutions.

lol! +cred!

Do I feel another guide coming on?

I completely agree that people's first stop should be the forum search feature NOT the Add Thread link! I actually like to see old threads revisited for that warm feeling of nostalgia!

RE: Repeated Topics

The scroll is no problem but the only search the site actually has is the one for auctions. At least thats the only one I see. I know some have the google search thing but being as google has been sued a few times for selling info about its users I tend to stay clear of it and besides that I like Ask Jeeves better. So maybe add a regular search like what is on the forum for auctions.

There's a search bar on the forums. If you go to general discussion you'll find one at the top-ish

RE: Repeated Topics

Oh yeah forgot that one. LOL I guess that shows how often I start a thread. But also notice sometimes the info you get from old threads are wrong cause of updates that may have changed things. But also some of the pinned topics could be combined to make it so less were there so more regular topics showed.

RE: Repeated Topics

lol funny but that still doesn't solve if it may be a topic open but old that comes up and things have changed from updates. Also went and counted and the pinned topics number 13 while regular topics were just 10. I've seen times when we had so many new topics due to the numbers of pinned topics there were several on the second page. Note all you have to do is click next some people aren't patient enough to do that after scrolling threw the first page. It was something I had brought up on combining a few of them before and even though some staff liked the idea nothing ever came of it.

This a forum, a place where popular and unpopular opinions are voiced. If you don't like what I have to say, I don't care. Logically tell me how or why I am wrong, and we can discuss it. Reply to me the way an upset 10 year old replies, and you will be spoken to as such.

RE: Repeated Topics

Couldnt agree with you more Lady Alica, it doesn't take more than a few minutes to do a quick search before going ahead and making a new topic about something that may have been discussed before.

You also have this mighty tool called self restraint where if you cant think of something constructive to say and contribute to a topic you can just not post :) The point is not to have 3 or 4 threads of the same topic popping up in the top 5 on the front page.

Meh it isn't that big of a deal to me. Go to the a/m/c at gaia and there are millions of repeat topics made every day. Honesly The problem seems to be a miniature one.

RE: Repeated Topics

I totally agree!!
Best example is very recent "leak" off info about GW:EotN and GW. That day not one topic was about anything else except those 2, I do understand the excitement but you can maybe first search then post a new topic? I know I don't ALLWAY's do, but I also rarely create so ...

RE: Repeated Topics

I think the search would be more helpful and more noticed if over in the community list to the side so its there no matter where in guildwars.gameamp you are. I guess I never really payed any attention to the one up top on the right cause only you login is there and I'm always logged in so I pretty much never click or look over there.

But if its a matter of just not having more than one post with the same topic in the top five spots making more room for recent topics to show on the first page would help a lot.

If its just wanting to stop topics with same names all together well like I said with updates comes changes so your going to have same topics as older ones.

But really I don't mind the extra posts as long as they are from different people cause it takes less time to answer a question than to search through all the posts on the forums.

I guess I don't see all the fuss when I mostly look at Wiki for info for its better organized (no offense) but I come here cause of friendly people that usually help on opinionated questions. This is the best site of well behaved, generally nice people to converse with.

RE: Repeated Topics

couldnt you have a related topics thingy?

so you can just bunch em all together and only have the first created post show up...

so the admins could maybe read the subjects and if they feel they are the same as others, they could link them inside the first one that was created...

... that made sense in my head... but reading it doesnt, and dosnt sound like it would work to well either, meh

RE: Repeated Topics

People should use search, yeah.
But I wouldn't want this turning into guru where if you DO repeat a topic you get a "OMFG USE THE SEARCH YOU GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED NOOB!!!!".

RE: Repeated Topics

I honestly don't think it is an issue that will be resolved. People will not use the search button. Although this thread may have gotten a couple to do so, the vast majority will not read it and threads will continue to be repeated in the future :).

The other thing is that from time to time there are reasons to have repeated topics. Some times a long thread gets away from the topic after a few pages and it is better to start a new thread than it is to try and get the original thread back on topic.

Also there are a lot of people that just read maybe the first thread and the last couple (especially in long threads) that had been posted so a fresh topic is one that people will pay more attention to.

How many times have you seen someone post "I didn't have time to read all of that but....."

RE: Repeated Topics

I agree with you that repeated posts are kinda anoying, specialy a few days back when there were like 3 threads in the top 5 about solo farming nerf and stuff.

I don't like to read everything over and over again just in a different topic. However if everyone looks for a past topic about what he wanted to post there wil be alot more topics with over 1 page, wich i don't realy like.

I think the best thing is to use the search option for topics related to yours, then make your new topic but put a link to the related topic at the start of yours. Only if the related topic is fairly recent (lets say around a week or 2) you should just post in there.

i don't really see the problem here... if you want to read something else YOU can use our MIGHTY SEARCH TOOL to, you know ? like search for stuff you find interesting and then bump it... and then it is like in top 5 0.o woooooooooow amazing....

sorry, for the somewhat stupid(and maybe a little sarcastic) way of writing here but i honestly don't see the problem.
