Expansion in the works?

I check thed the necromancer skills the other day, and noticed something funny and interesting.

At level 50, you get Death's Touch I. I thought it was a mistake at first, so upon checking further, I found quite a few level 1 skills down the tree.

If you think about it, why level 1? If you get spell level 1 at the highest adventure level possible, when you get spell level 2?

Interesting... Are they already planning an expansion, or will they increase the adventure level in a patch? I'm not in a hurry, of course, but it does sound interesting. But then again, when was the last time a MMORPG did not get an expansion or three? :)

RE: Expansion in the works?

Well, the system of having every skill with levels is an EQ-I and EQ-II classic by now. Doesn't necessarily mean there's going to be a version II of every skill, it's just how they're all set up. It does allow for easy expansion down the road.

Right now I doubt many folks at Sigil are thinking about Expansions though. They're way to busy doing a great job at working out all the kinks and konks the game has and had.

Right now I'm having too much fun to even consider an exapansion, just thought it seems fun to have the option. If there are no plans of an expansion sometime in the future, they could just as well name the skills Death's Touch instead of Death's Touch 1 and so on.

Great game, though. It's much better than World of Borecraft. ;)

RE: Expansion in the works?

Oh I'm sure an expansion will come at some point.
First Sigil has to complete the planned for launch content though.

There's little to no End Game content as of yet. We're all eagerly awaiting that. Especially the folks who rushed through the game and have been at level 40 to 50 for a month now.

Best way to enjoy the game for now is to take your time, not be in a rush and roll the occasional alt to try out what you really like. I've brought three different healers to their early twenties now. One for each month I played really. At my rate, I'll Ding 40 around Christmas :-)

RE: Expansion in the works?

Why would anyone rush to the highest levels? Personally, i think the entire point in a never-ending game is to enjoy the actual game. I'd rather spend six months gaining six levels instead of six days. It's about the journey, not the destination. :)

But yeah, right now they don't even have visible helmets, and unicorns and shadowhounds were just released. Guess we'll have to wait a while.

BTW what is that end-game thing you mentioned? I'm quite new to the MMORPG scene and haven't even reached level 20 in any MMORPG yet. Will the story come to an end? Um... are there a story?

RE: Expansion in the works?

I fully agree with you. After playing more than 6 years of MMORPG's I only made it to highest level with one character. And when she got there I basically stopped playing her. It is all about the journey, and the friendships.

What end-game is referring to are story lines about special areas with the monsters/demons/etc that made the world as it is. Most MMORPG's have quests where you need to gather many top level players and defeat the arch enemies for truely unique loot. Personally I don't get the fun of it. If I made it to the end why would I care about my armor or weapons? But that is just me.

Maybe somebody with a bigger urge to get to the top can explain it better.

RE: Expansion in the works?

I never fully understood the whole "End Game Content" either, but I think I can grasp it through comparison with Guild Wars. GW really is just 20 levels of tutorial and endless "end Game". Essentially end-game content is stuff to keep you occupied after you reached highest level. Achievement players tend to reach that rather quickly. In Guild Wars that could be brought down to a matter of hours, but there it's no problem as it was designed around that idea in the first place.

However there's whole hordes of players who see the intermediate levels between 1 and the highest as some kind of annoyance developers put in to "gain an extra month of sub". To them all that matters is what happens after that. That's when "the game begins". Quite frequently they're subsequently disappointed by the lack of meaningful content and start whining about that in forums. Most end-game content constitutes raiding. Raiding is something I avoid like the plague it is. It's institutionalized group-grinding by rote. Ick!

A good example of this can be found in the WOW community and game system. <<flame repellent: this is not representative of all WOW players of course >>.
I've been frequently told that you have to tough it out and grind for two-three weeks until Level 40 before the game becomes fun as you can raid for uber-gear. It's those remarks (besides the way toons look in WOW) that keep me from even trying that game.

When I reach final ding, you won't hear me cry "there's no substance to this game" because I've seen (nearly) every critter, story, location and quest in the game. Not just the 10% that's best for XP grinding.

There's also a sub-section of achievement players who don't bitch and whine, they re-roll and try another class. For them speed-leveling is a sport. I can appreciate them enjoying it. I have some trouble with the whiners though.

RE: Expansion in the works?

It's not just MMORPG's, it's pretty much every game. Back in Diablo 2 (may it rest in peace), I joined a multiplayer game with a low level character. Five minutes later, I had been offered high-level gear for every single part of my body. Rings, armor, weapons, you name it. The worst part (IMHO) wasn't that I couldn't use any of it as it was high-level, or even that everything was offered for free. The worst thing was that several of the people offering it to me did not understand why I refused it. I was very low level and didn't even have a magical weapon, so how could I possibly enjoy the game? It kinda made me laught, kinda made me want to cry.

After spending a lot of time in Diablo 2 in multiplayer, I got really bored of it. Every time I playing a group, it was just run to a boss, kill it, grab the gear it dropped, quit and restart. Every. Single. Time. Basically, people just kill stuff so they can grab better gear and kill even more stuff to grab even more gear and so on. It's just pointless.

It's sad that people still don't see the difference between a single-player action-RPG like Diablo 2 and, say, World of Warcraft. I played WoW quite a bit and loved it. In fact, I got some problems with the update, so I had to download about 3%, quit, restart, download the next 3% and so on and on and on. If I had been able to download all in one go (of the patch, of course), I might still be playing it. It looks cartoony and there's a lot of grinding, but it also had a great community. I made a lot of friends there and even joined a guild meeting in-character, both which has yet to happen in Vanguard.

But that said, I don't miss it. Vanguard plays a lot like World of Warcraft, but feels a lot more advanced and enjoyable. It's pretty much World of Warcraft all over again, except there's far more too it.

Come to think of it, ever played a FPS deathmatch online? Every match is the same, no amtter what game. The newbies try to enjoy the game, the rest runs for the biggest, baddest weapon right away and try to find a place where they can reach more ammo easily, kill other people easily and not be seen. A place,, of course, they know exactly where is already. There's a reason Counter-Strike is commonly refered to as Camper-Strike.

Anyway, just rambling on, I guess.

Which server are you playing on? I have noticed quite a bit of difference between the various servers. I have played on three different ones. I started off on Hilsbury where the majority of the players seem to have the urge to play for xp and get to level 50 as fast as possible. If you went to the well known xp grind spots you could hear the 'CIS team need healer', 'KE spot open for tank'. Outside those areas it was rather quiet. I also played on Infenium, which was just quiet everywhere. I think I have never teamed there. And now I play on Florendyl, which I really like. People stop to talk, give random buffs and you can find players at the most remote locations. Based on your name and time of posting I assume you are really a Norwegian dude. You are not limited to the 3 EU servers. I would really recommend you create at least one alt on Florendyl to have a look for yourself.

RE: Expansion in the works?

Um, I am in fact Norwegian. I've been playing on the Infineum server mostly, and so far I've had a decent experience. Some people ignore me, others join me for a quick party now and then. But thanks, I'll try the Florendil server. The problem is it can be very difficult to come up with an unique name, even on Low Populated servers. World of Warcraft was actually better at that, as both names counted towards the unique part. Then again, I tried City of Heroes for a while as Lady Nightstalker and got a major problem with some MentalMidget who insisted he (she?) had a different character named Nightstalker and said I'd stolen his name. Which was bull, of course, as I've been playing for about thirty minutes by then. :-)
