Meet The Teams
Wet Dream - wD
wD quickly rose out of the ashes of nearly dead US CTF scene as one of the more dominant teams. Containing two of the more talented (and even more contreversial) players who are just now becoming more prominent among competitive players, Vengance (and yes, he mispells it like that, and may possibly referred to on air as "The E-less wonder") and Tweak are both strong players who love the drama of matches as much as the actual competition. But make no mistakes, their attitude problems do not change the fact that they're formidable competitors and are part of a team that can do some major damage, despite some recent flakey performances.
Possible Lineup: Tweak, Vengance, Methode, Phenom, Terr0r
Backups?: Xenos, Apoc(jackaroo), etc.
Carpe Imperium - [Ci]
[Ci] is definately on a hot streak. Coming off an impressive performance vs {BORG} starting with a dramatic 4 cap comeback overtime win on Citadel and ending with an impressive performance on Pistola, Ci has serious momentum and is showing how their team is really beginning to show themselves as being capable of playing at a top-5 level, a level they've honestly haven't been at till now.
[Ci] is hungry for a shot at #1, but since !N! snatched up the first shot at TB's newly earned #1 spot, [Ci] has elected to take a shot at an arguably stronger #2 team, showing that they have the real desire to take on any challenges they can find, and this time it's a team that has thoroughly beaten the rest of the teams in the top 5.
Possible Lineup: Octavius, Cerberus, Gunker, Cryco, Kash11
Backups: ArXis, some others that probably shouldn't play this match

What 3 deminsional levels will be played in this grand competition?
Grendelkeep
Selected by wD, this map is easily the most popular CTF map in 2k4. The pace of this map favors teams who can adjust quickly, especially in stand-off situations, which is where alot of the caps stem from, since this map is harder to defend than it is to run on. Also, this map is heavy on last-second counter grabs in order to keep one team from scoring, which makes for exciting returns and intensity. This map favors wD's experience, it's been their favorite map for a long time, and often they put up really high scoring games here, but Ci's defense has shown the potential of being able to stop even the persistant grabbing and out-of-control style of Borg. On the other offensive end, Ci will need to bring their O's teamwork to another level to overcome the much stronger wD defense. wD's real strength is in their defense, and Ci will need more creative moves from Gunker as well as well-placed cover in order to overcome a very tough wD defense.
Gamebreaker: What I like to now call the G-factor. Will Gunker pull out more crazy experimental moves like we saw on Pistola last week? He'll need to if [Ci] hopes to have a chance. For wD it will be playing their usual pace and making sure their D holds up under pressure.
Pistola
It really makes sense for [Ci] to select this map after last week's dominating performance on it. Highlighted by Gunker's creative running and a stead-fast defense that really tightend up for the second half of the map, this could possibly be [Ci]'s new homemap. However, I think that wD has to be pleased with this selection, because I think it will work well with their setup, because it is more middle-intensive, meaning that it's not too terribly difficult to get the flag out to middle for weaker O of wD where their D/mid guys can pick them up and really help them carry caps home. [Ci] will have to play smart on the defensive end and stop the wD runs early, while wD will have to be wary of the Gunker-lead offensive proficiency of [Ci]. This map will be tight, and intense to watch.
Gamebreaker: The monkey in the middle. Amp runs could be the difference on this map for either team. If Vengance (Yes he spells it incorrectly) gets an amp in coordination with a wD run that makes it to the middle, it will be very hard for the Ci defense to stop the wD surge. I look for Cerberus or Octavius, whoever is elected, to put up a suprisingly strong game in the middle for [Ci], since the two of them are up and coming as the obvious primary fraggers for the team.
Maul
A very intriguing tiebreaker choice for wD and a possible chink in their map-selection armor. This map can be an incredibly strong map for [Ci]. When their defense is clicking on this map, they can be incredibly hard to score on, and at the same time Kashll seems to always find ways to get the flag over mid for [Ci] even against the toughest opponents. wD though in selecting this map shows their confidence in their overall teamwork, as this map is a total-team map. Every cap will require the entire team working together as opposed to a very seperate O and D set that slower maps lean towards. Another map that is too close to call, and if this match goes to the TB map, all bets are off.
Gamebreaker: First blood. Whoever caps first on Maul will have an immediate advantage both psychologically and historically. It's rare that the first team to cap on Maul ultimately loses. It's not a tough map to lock down once you score, and conservative play on it can hold out for long stents. Both teams should approach the first cap like it's already overtime, because since they're so evenly matched here, it's most likely that the game, nay, the match, will be decided by a single flag.
Other Notes:
With the introduction of [iM]Phenom into the wD team, and the departure of wD-Ne0 to Rebirth, wD could arguably in a re-adjustment phase teamwork-wise, and they'll have to find the proper alignment in time to face [Ci], who will probably use their most familiar lineup who have been playing together for a good while.
[Ci] will have to work to stay positive if they lose (possibly even lose big) on Grendelkeep, wD's homemap. Not to say that Grendelkeep is out of reach for [Ci], they're far too strong to count out before the match even starts, but they should keep in mind that the last two maps of the three map cater to their team and their style of play.
wD will have to show some consitency and show up ready to play in a positive mindset with their real starters for once. The contreversial TB match that cost them the #1 spot may have been a fluke, but matches count, whether you play your starters or people skip out and the third string gets in there with high pings and lack-luster talent. wD needs to man up and bring their A lineup and leave the bullshit at home, otherwise they'll be dropping down another couple of spots to a very focused [Ci] team.
Goodluck to both teams, this should be another awesome match.
