Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

I have been playing this game for well over a year and half and I only have one person in a super group and that was one I made myself so my toon would be left alone and I thought one person could make enough to build a base. To this point I have refused all offers to be on a super group. Contrary to what people say I have yet to see any benefit to joining one. This causes me to fend off bind invites to a sg and having to constantly explain that I do not see any valid reason to join any group.
I would like to hear from fellow players that are tired of being bombarded by blind invites to a sg. I know that I am not alone.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

What I hate worst is that people camp out in the Spawning zone for heroes. In other words when you first make a toon you spawn out down the steps from Ms.Liberty.I've had people Blind invite me right when i zone in.I refuse to join in just because of the Blind invites.

What I hate worst is when you Reject to join someones Supergroup and they keep constantly trying to invite you and after the third blind invite from the same guy in less than 5 minutes,You have the right to tell the guy to f*** off.

Another thing that gets on my nerves is the Supergroup names in general. On Justice there is one named 'City of Heroes Pimps'.I'd always try to avoid that Group cause most likely it's a bunch of kids trying to act cool cause they can be called a Pimp.I know that was alittle off topic but it's just another thing that gets on my nerves the most.

Ok well it's nice to let loose my anger on the Supegroups.Very good way to start my day off.Supergroups are one reason why i solo.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

Not all supergroups are bad. But you do not have to be on a SG to play this game. SGs can be a big help for transportaion to the different zones. If you do want someone to team with and are on a good SG then you have people that like to play together. But it is all up to the individual person. I personally hate blind team and or SG invites. To me it is rude and just makes you look desperate. Teams are not quite as bad as blind SG invites. But they annoy me anyway.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

it's obvious that two arent members of the Alliance! when we first started the gameamp alliance, there were at least two full teams of ampers running missions together and kicking ass. it was tons of fun, and still is, except there arent as many people on in the SG like before.

when the SG was formed, a few of us adopted triumph as our homes and we became good friends from teaming so much (PathofWrath, Sportgenius, and myself).

Nasali and Deadman also moved to triumph at a later date and the three of us and path have started using Ventrilo while we play. it's nice to actually hear the people you've been playing with for over a year! (i hear path does a pretty good peter griffin impression too).

the same thing occured when the Bringers of Wrath VG was formed. Ampers joining together to form a common bond of ass kicking is always a hella good time.

basically, it comes down to playing with your friends and having a good time.

I started playing this game because of the design, mechanics of the game (my first MMO) and so I could be a super hero, but I've stayed with the game this long because of the friends I have made from the supergroups I've belonged to and the friends I have made on this site.

HISSSSSSSSSSSSS Ugh You said the V word... The evil in my life right now (Actually there is more evil but that sounded so dramatic).

Big is correct tho. If you are able to play with friends it makes all the differance. I have made so many wonderful friends on this game. Not to mention the good friends on this site that talks about the game.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

The only reason I still play this game after two years is because of the great supergroups I am part of. I have had plenty of alts that joined less then perfect SG's in the past and both the alts and SG's have long died. But a great SG is really something to treasure. Whenever I log on will find a group of friends that make playing MMORPG's so much fun. But finding that great SG can be a painful process. I would still recommend to everybody to keep trying. It is absolutely worth it.

So, I like playing the game. But I like playing the game with cool people even more. Big, Raz, DM, Nas, DC, and others from here. The folks from Global Heroics. They are the reason I go into withdrawls when I'm away from the game for a couple days at a time.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

I must say that I fully agree with Lunar One.

This game attracts many different kinds of people and different kinds of gamers. There is no 'one way' to play the game.

To me, Supergroups add an entirely different dimention to the game. Rather than logging on every day to run around the city by myself, defeating villains and monsters in silence, I prefer the social interaction that comes with my SG. But then- I am just that kind of person. I now have more purpose in playing. I am promoting a fun, casual 'organization', supporting other players, and creating a home and atmosphere that people can join and enjoy. To me, it makes playing the game more fulfilling.

However, like Lunar said, not all gamers are created equal. Some of us like to log in, pwn face, level up, and so on, all on our own. If that's what makes the game fun for you, then that's what you should keep doing!

No one should be sending blind SG invites, and if they are, the SG is not worth joining in the first place. I think it's a great idea to start your own SG if you just want to avoid getting the invites. I played a toon for a while on Guardian with my brother and we created the "SG for people who don't want a SG" supergroup. :) It was just him and me, so it worked.

But- don't be completely put-off by SG's as a whole. While many of them may be shabby organizations, some of them are great and are lots of fun. But again, if it aint your thing, it just aint your thing.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

Well, I don't really join too many different SG's. Almost all my heroes on Virtue are in one SG. I know all the people in it, and we support each other with funding needs, and team quite often. Also we have plenty of prestige, since there's really only about 4 of us with all our alts in it, so we have a base with everything we need. While many things, eg: transferring inf, can be done without an SG, its easier, and easier to trust them than to broadcast and get someone who may run off with it.

*Neo Nebula: lvl 50 Controller*
*Cilux: lvl 50 Scrapper*

Griffan: lvl 45 Defender
Justice:
*Xenokrates: lvl 50 Brute*
*Kuramaru: lvl 50 MM*
Wolf Fury: lvl 38 Brute
Bullitz Krieg: lvl 40 MM
Towering Shadow: lvl 38 Bane Soldier
Guardian:
*Titaness of Fire: lvl 50 Tank*
Shikimori: lvl 41 Controller

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

In a good SG it's all about a group of players with similar playstyles and personalities. Other than the comic book aspects like The Justice League or Avengers it's not needed at all.

There is an additional channel to communicate with the SG only.

There is another additional channel (Coalition) to communicate with other allied SG's to your own.

These are great team finding tools.

But with obvious additional tools like the global channels like gameamp.com there is even less actual need for joining an SG. I know I can throw a hello out on that channel and get tons of replies.

Base options are an obvious plus. The teleporters are like crack and I'm spoiled now. I remember how much of a pain getting around in the early levels were, and the SG bases are sweet for your lowbie alts that do not have movement powers yet. It's kinda hard to muster the Prestige needed for a fully operational base solo, but they did improve upon that recently. But building those big bases takes a lot of Prestige, so large SGs can create some really cool stuff.

Then there is reputation. On Liberty ask about Those Who Wield Power. Most will tell you its a good set of folks to team with. We took great pride in not allowing griefers and gankers to be associated with us. Our reputation carries some weight as positive and helpful gamers. To be associated with a good SG will gain you teaming opportunities from other players that recognise that.

Blind invites to a SG....... Only come from idiots. Refuse immediately. I too put all of my toons into a private SG as soon as they hit level 10 until I can get to an officer with invite priveliges to get me in TWWP and stop the spamming.

How I would recommend approaching SG membership is to just play and develop your friends/global friends list. If you find a group of players all under the same banner that you have fun with every time you run with them, and you see them often, then they are worth consideration. Otherwise you don't need it, and you can still have fun with them. You will find that the quality SGs are a little more leery of whom they invite. And they will approach you much differently than the blind invite. They will take note that you are a good player and approach you about it with polite tells asking about your interest after they get to know you a little.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

As people may have noticed, I do a lot of soloing. This is not because I don't like SGs, but because I'm focused on getting so much of the game's content -- teams accelerate you past storylines, so by and large I try to do the storylines alone (except for missions that more or less require teams) and then team until I reach the next 5-level mark and have access to more storylines.

But I digress.

There is value in supergroups IF the groups have decent leadership or are just collections of friends. I don't team with my SG-mates that much either -- there are a few of them in my level range (one at 39, one 38, a 36 and a 34), but the 39 is offline until she gets a better connection and computer, the 38 is a bigger altaholic than me, the 36 usually doesn't bother trying to fight her brother for the keyboard and the 34, until last week, was working at H & R Block -- and if anybody has ever done tax preparation work, they know you have no life from Jan 31 to April 17th (in this case).

Supergroup bases are a distinct advantage. Access to teleporters, storage of inspirations, salvage and enhancements (I've got 2 Hami-Os I picked up as Kid that I didn't want to carry around for 20 levels until Sunny was able to use them), the ability to create temp powers (always handy in the occasional boss fight) and other niftiness. It's REALLY annoying to be in the deepest recesses of Eden or the Rikti Crash Site, die, and be forced to go through PI or FF to get back to your mission -- with a base reclamator, you can just go to the base, to Eden, to your mission -- not that you see many door missions in RCS or Eden, but that's beside the point.

And it's nice to have a group of people just to chat with. Sure, I can chat on the Gameamp channel, and I do enjoy talking to you folks... but the people on the Student Union channel are people I've known for years. Good friends I don't often get to talk to elsewhere.

So... no, you don't have to be in a SG... but it adds an element to the game. A couple of them.

RE: Why the big deal to be in a supergroup?

Don't get me wrong I have no problem with people being in a super group. The major problem I have is the recruiting. It is a major pain fending off blind invites to a super group and on top of that are the people that spam the broadcast channel with how great their group is and want you to join.
Even you must admit that it sometimes gets out of hand.
If you want to join a super group fine. More power to you. But joining a super group is not for everyone.
As of right now there is nothing a super group can provide me that I can not provide for myself.
As it is right now I seldom have problems getting invited to a team and there are people that seek me out for my skills and they know that I can get the job done.

Actually, I haven't noticed much problem with this. The broadcast ads and blind invites seem to coincide with certain variables like time of day, server, and zone.

As most people know, I'm a bit of an altoholic. And have 2 accounts. 99% of the time I don't have any problems with blind SG invites.

I try to avoid Supergroups the best I can. There just a waste of time. The only reason i see to join a Supergroup is for the Teleporters. But I do occasionally get blind invites all the time on my 5os in Atlas Park.

Don't know if you may know this but there is a setting in the Option Screen that allows you to reject Supergroup invites automatically.I use it alot on my toons to keep away the best i can,I enjoy my peace and quiet.

Is there some inconsistency here? "Occasionally" "all the time"?

Maybe you don't like to do a gameamp SG, but you could at least join the gameamp.com global channel. It is always handy to have all of us at hand even if we are on different servers and what not. And, of course, welcome!

A very good case for you to not need one. Even if teleporters are a major concern if the player with the star sets an option, you can use their base teleporters too while you group with them. You won't find any quality SG's out there spamming invites or their own accolades.

Welcome to the site Houston. I see that this is only your fourth post and I missed your first. You were actualy the first to note that they added a feature to auto block SG invites. Good info for the crew. +cred

Unfortunately you must have had some bad experiences with previous SGs because they aren't a waste of time. Being in an SG and running with a great group of players is what keeps my account active. Were it not for TWWP, I would have shut it down long ago. I'm playing WoW mostly now, but I still get the urge to go level and pound on things with my heroes. I always know I have a home and friends. Oddly enough its a little like Wolverine, my favorite Hero. I love the team, but I got my own thing going on sometimes.

I've seen MANY SGs start and fail. It's not an easy thing to get the leaders and members right. Even though most have the best intentions, leading an SG is a pain in the ass too(excuse my French). I led TWWP for about 2 years before I went semi-retired. Not alone mind you, I was a member of a council and advisor to the main lead. The drama and personality comflicts are endless. It can leave a real bad taste in player's mouths.

But taken from my personal experience, once you find the right crew, it does enhance the playing experience.

As far as joining SGs go, you need to interview them as much that they need to interview you. They could be a tight group but just don;t share your vision of the game.

I've actually had have a few bad experiences and those are the main reason I try and avoid Supergroups today. As I learned while playing alot I don't like to team alot,I enjoy Doing the missions and reading the story lines even though i've done it many times.I usually let the teams come to me which happens rarely. But the times I do team either is a Disaster or it turns out really good.

I've seen MANY SGs start and fail. It's not an easy thing to get the leaders and members right. Even though most have the best intentions, leading an SG is a pain in the ass too(excuse my French).

Sadly I think Running the Supergroup is worst than being in one,not only do you have to hear them talk, you have to answer there questions. Not that giving a hand is a bad thing in all but mainly the questions they ask are if you can promote them to a higher rank,or "Can you Pl me?".My favorite is hearing them ask if they can work on the base.Yes,I'm talkin' about the New players but it's still a pain.

I led TWWP for about 2 years before I went semi-retired. Not alone mind you, I was a member of a council and advisor to the main lead. The drama and personality comflicts are endless. It can leave a real bad taste in player's mouths.

I'm afraid to ask why you stopped running it and "Semi-Retired" was it because all the drama that had happen and all the conflicts you had to settle?

It's not a bad thing at all, it's an addiction thing. Actually we had most of the drama handled and things were going smooth. A group of real life friends here in Texas I hang out with had been playing WoW since almost release and were constantly badgering me to join them.

I fought the urge because I'm a huge original RPG Warhammer fan. I knew that playing WoW would kill my urge to play CoH like I was. I have over 40+ alts all over the servers. finally one of my friends bought me the game for some fence building I did for him and I was proven right. I'm kinda hooked on WoW right now and I just wasn't around enough to qualify myself as a leader. I need to be online a lot to actually lead.

I won't deny that the drama and BS did take the fun out of the game some days, but the overall team comradery and the truly awesome accomplishments we all reached together out weighed it 100 fold. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. And you have to take the good with the bad. There is no way to get 2 people to agree on everything, 30+ is an obvious challenge.

SGs can make or break your experience with the game. That's a fact. But we need to have faith in our fellow heroes that we can work together on common goals and have fun doing it.

I know, because now those friends and I are leading a new guild on WoW. So I've signed up for it yet again. I have faith.

We offered no PL'ing services, TWWP's motto is "Trainers of Elite Super Heroes". We helped each other learn the game from each other's perspectives and role in the teams. Simply running in one of our groups was like PL'ing because we just plowed the missions. There would almost always be experienced players online to direct the team and teach people new to the game or that class of character. That's why I'm always so hard on PL'ers. There is just no need for it. Find a good team and the levels just flow.

I was of course the Blaster specialist. You'll find a lot of my advice here in the Blaster secion. That's my deal, I like running squshies that rip massive ammounts of damage.

Granted, I can't tell you how to slot every character type, but my friends taught me enough about their class that I can offer advise for most situations.

Leading is inately hard, and I'm by no means perfect. But I try to be fair. And I'll stress again that it really takes the right group of players. I was also the SG new applicant screener when I still had regular contacts with the Liberty community. If there was even the hint of previous events where a player thought it would be funny to pull giant monsters into a hami raid or was known for exploiting PvP things in the earlier releases you got a firm NO THANKS. We had standards to uphold, and those for whom the standards were second nature were a majority of the SG.

That's why the SG worked, and is still alive. Our simple rules of "Have fun and respect the other players" was a foundation for finding the right peeps. There were a suprisingly few that had a problem with it, but there were some.

And as I'm sure your eyes are bleeding from another one of my long winded posts, the only thing you have to worry about when asking me a question is how much you will have to read. GameAmp is a decent place to find people that could run one of those quality SGs. Don't give up on SGs as a whole, just be very selective. When you find the right crew running one, you'll know.
