City of Heroes and you

City of Heroes and you.I get bugged all the time by my wife that I play the game to much.I enjoy the game to much cause when I was a little boy I always dreamed of having powers. Then I grew out of that and wanted to become a Cowboy. But anyways,Alot of my heroes are all Southerners 'cause I like to have my Heroes relate to me.The Hair and Facial Hair are the same color as mine,The body and the clothes are similar to mine also.Always wondered if I was the only one doing this.I don't get Critized alot in the game cause of the pattern in my Southerner heroes, cause I don't have many friends on the game to ask.Thank you all for letting me on this site.More than happy to make new friends. But let us stick to the question,Is there a Similarity between you and your Heroes?

Maybe my inner personality matches for a part my alter ego's. But even that is a maybe. From the outside we are definitely nothing alike. But I can keep dreaming, can I?

RE: City of Heroes and you

Good topic. :)

My first character relates to me in a way. I too love the western/ country feel- although I'm from Ohio. So, I made me up a cowgirl. She has red hair like me- but mine is short. If they would let me put short hair with a cowboy hat, I'd be doing that instead. So yes, I wanted her to resemble me.

However, one day I did try to make a hero in my likeness. She was my height, my size, similar hair, I even messed with the facial scales. Turned out that I hated to play her. I just didn't want to look at myself really. I wanted a glorified version of myself (ie, 5 inches taller). So- she was promptly deleted.

My other characters only resemble me in the fact that they are female.

I grew up wanting to be a superhero as well (to the point of designing armor based on the scientific principles I was learning in physics class as a teenager). While I've made a few of the characters I designed in my head as a kid into heroes in CoH, I've never actually made anybody who looks like -me-.

RE: City of Heroes and you

My main Thundarpants has a costume option that looks like me(Granted when I was 18 and in football. Not the slightly rounder version I'm currently sportin!) but I've always associated with the darker heroes in the comic world. So most of my heroes have some sort of inner demon they are struggling with, or straight out look like the demons in my own personality.

Asphalt Mage is a great example. Nasty looking demon that just loves to burn things. Anyone that's seen me at a bon fire knows about my fire bug tendencies.

I wrote a little story about an event with electricity and me a while back(to the mortification of a lot of posters....I'm OK, really) that pretty much explains why I'm so attracted to the Electrical sets.

I roll up a lot of alts to test powers, but only when they come from my core personality do they get lots of attention and levels.

RE: City of Heroes and you

Well I finally read this thread and was surprised because it was not what I thought it was lol.

As far as me being like a character I created, I have to say that Col Flag is alot like me in terms of look and the way he is moral wise. The only other trait I tend to make with my toons is the Long hair. It is like if it does not have long hair (when the hair is showing anyway) I am not happy with it. Since I have long blond hair I always see my toons with long blond hair. Kind of a weird thing.

RE: City of Heroes and you

None of the characters I've made yet look like me much at all, really. To tell you the truth, the idea never even came to me, which when you think about it is kinda weird.

Though, while we're on the topic of making characters, does anyone else find it nearly impossible to create a character without knowing what power sets you're giving them in advance, or at least having some kind of back-story to them?
Usually I find myself almost unable to make someone unless I "know who they are" first, in one way or another. Either that or I have a basic look I'm going for, make them from there, then choose their powers based on how they look. I've yet to make a character or choose powers without basing it on some aspect of what they already have.

Now, back to the main topic, making a hero that looks exactly (or rather, as close as you can get in the game) like me is an interesting idea. Now the hard part is deciding what power sets to give him/me...

*EDIT* That would actually be a pretty amusing SG idea. A SG where everyone is a toon that looks like them. XD

They don't give players the ability to look as good as I do so I've never tried.

ROTF, Big you kill me!!

When I first made my 50, I used my real name in his Bio, as well as referred to my home country in his origin.

I recently changed it to fictionaly, because I realised I'm playing an RPG. I play me in RL everyday, so I guess when I play CoH, I'd prefer to be someone else.

Hummm,

I would have to say I've gone out of my way to make sure that none of my characters look like myself. Since there seems to be a lack of fat, ugly balding men in the character build section. I am sure this is a temporary oversight by the Dev. that they will address in an up coming patch.

RE: City of Heroes and you

For a time my main on Freedom had a costume slot that was identical to what you'd see me wearing on a daily basis, but I've changed it recently to another version of his armor. He is the only toon I have that's my height and I do tend to identify with his origin more than my other toons so I guess that in some way he's an alternate version of me.

RE: City of Heroes and you

On Virtue, I have a character wich I have patterned on the following premisce: If I were a living character in Paragon City, I would have been...

Character in CoH
Myself in RL

name: Han Do Rhee
Andre
(both pronounced fast sound the same)

origin :natural
so I have been told by both my father & mother.

abilities: scrapper Martial Arts/Super-Reflexes
Martial Arts teacher 6th dan Taekwon-Do/2nd dan hapkido

looks : Caucasian with long dark hair, pale complexion
small dark eyes, aquiline nose and thin mouth;
athletic built 6 feet 200 pounds.

Those of my friends who saw the toon were astonished by the ressemblance to my true self: please
pay proper tribute to the incredible character creation module of CoH/CoV

costume : white sport suit blsck stripes & belt
white fighting gloves & shoes

The martial arts costumes were inappropriate because traditionnal japanese & Chinese uniforms; the traditional Korean garb is attached to the front and the rank stripes of TKD were unobtainable on those.

Status : founder-leader of Odojang SG in 2004
founder & director of O Dojang Martial Arts Academy in 2001

The present members of my SG are all real life friends and students who also made alter-egos of themselves in-game.

So here you are: my excellent recipe for a schizophrenic life! Enjoy!

RE: City of Heroes and you

I love this topic!! thanks Houston.
Whymsy my main doesn't look like me...she is what I wanted to look like when I was younger, blond and petite. I am brunette and taller (5'6) but every other way she is me...
I made her a total emp and I am a nurse in real life. I am a healer in the game and out.
Most of the toons I make, that I enjoy the most, have some kind of power that assists a team. Guess I love to be needed, its my nature.

ohh and Big thanks for the laugh

RE: City of Heroes and you

I have a sorta me inprint on every toon I make and play, the more "me-ness" involved, the more likely I'll play them regularly. Marine X, my 50, although much heavier built than I, is my exact height, as is my first GAA toon Marine X and his replacement Livingston. They also feature my standard issue Shaved head and goatee. Being 6'4" at about 235 lbs ( no beer belly here ), I have always sorta been a tank in RL, so I feel comfortable in that role. Most of my toons feature my height, and to some extent, other personal appearance traits. Amazed to see how short 6'4" is in the COH universe, but that's a whole other story...

RE: City of Heroes and you

My 50 fire bug has a personality based on my own (smart ass, sly, witty and, some what humorous) and my other toon Granite Gargoyle (aka Rhingo) is more serious, to the point kinda passive/aggressive, determined.

it is almost like i split my personality in two and mad two different characters. I have always loved comic books and did wish i could be a super hero when i was younger, however devoid of mutation traits or a vatt of toxic waste, i took up writing instead and this game for me is similar to when you create a story the characters in your story both good and evil alike seem to take on certian personality traits of the author. I think that is what i love most about this game.

However due to Fatness not being an option at character creation, none of them look like me :-)

RE: City of Heroes and you

Hmm well ive been trying to get my hero to sort of represent me, now see i do martial arts, so i could pretty much make a MA/sword/BS/claws scrapper to represent this or i could make an archer (since its the only 'sport' im anywhere near good at)

Anyways the point of my characters are to have themes, that clash, for example my main man Hell is a demon (recently turned demonic vampire for sg purposes) and i like to think of him (fire/dark) as what id call 'my inner demon' that represents my 'demi gothic (as everyone says)' side with the fire that burns in me for what i belive (im a strong believe of what i belive and what i dont its hard to sway me, though i wouldnt say im too arrogant -_-)

So my hero, a semi representation of me is questing to kill my inner demon in villain form, as such...

this is why i have such an alt problem, i need to make them exact or else it wont feel right playing them (and yes i do belive in inner demons, and no im not a psycopath) so yeah.

Also i find history facinating, and i love rading about historic battles and civilisations, i care not for the future as there is only one certancy in the future, death...

Anyways sometimes i like to include gods from worldwide beliefs, some currant some forgotten with time, as such my new archer hero has been blessed by the japanese god or war and one of the 6 (i belive) gods of fortune. And my new brute in comparison was a tengu (an ogre type creature that lived in mountains, or was part of mountains, something along those lines) that was cursed by the Japanese god of gods (to match the hero's theme).

As such no im not a religous person, but i do find the concept of religeon intersting, as such history

So it is almsot as if my characters are myself, fighting the different sides of me. The different sides follow different belifes that were long lost in our history...

I guess?

Congratulations anyone who actually read/followed all that *sigh*

I would say the characters I make tend to look like the idealized version of me. I'm obviously not built like that, but in my avatar is a pic of RonJ73 from my Villains side. The hair style and facial features are very similar to me. As are the colors. I'm not as tanned and I don't have those cool glasses, but other than that, spot on. ;) (Well...minus the extraordinarily perfect body)

Not so much like me but some similarities I might like to have if I was a Superhero.
My addiction and reason for continued play is while growing up I was a huge Marvel fan and this is like living a comic book which has been awesome!
To be able to create your own Hero and costume and power combos has been one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences.
