Depends on where you get drops from. If it is a new player zone and you can sell them at 1-5 gold then I would salvage them. Chances are you'll get materials that cost more then just the drop.
I like to salvage weapons like swords, hammers, and axes because I have a good chance of getting Iron Ingots.

There was a time when I pretty much salvaged everything, and I think that's a pretty good thing to do for awhile, but once you start getting large amounts of materials, switch over and sell everything. That way you'll always have the stuff to craft new armor if you need it.

Yeah, It's really usefull to have the materials already, it saves a lot of money.
so you can choose, or going for materials and don't spend any money on it when you buy armor, or going for the money so you can buy the materials for armor.

i would keep up salvaging. as stated in other posts, it is a good way to get materials for new armor, and when you get too much.. sell it somewhere. there is always some1 willing to buy material. try droks ascalon, or any major cities people go to. in other words, switch between the two, or give some of it away to new players. That is always nice, and you may see them down the road and they help you (cough got 10k free cough)

my rule of thumb, sell everything on newb island or presear till you are in areas that bad guys are lvl 15 or so
then i salvage everything that will lead to leather, tanned hides, steel, iron, wood, glittering dust, plant fibers....
sell everything that is worth 100g or more as is to the merchant
generally thats the way I go, i dont salvage anything that may turn to granite slabs, chitten fragments or bones generally

This has been a small matter of indecision for me as well. I question how much money it really makes you to salvage, when it costs 20 gold to use the superior salvage kit, and 5 gold for IDs. (Does IDing every white item really make up for the cost of the kit?) Salvaging an item worth 50 gp to get 20 gp in material just doesn't size up. Some materials sell well at the trader; but from my point of view they most often don't.
Another thing that simply makes no sense to me is spending 600 gold on stupid chest keys for chests that yield 125 gold purple items and much less than perfect golds. I just don't see the value there, unless it satiates a gambling addiction.
The best casual deal imo, is when items can be traded to collectors for a profit.

Good point. The enjoyment factor would have to be prime motivator for me, 'cause the financial benefit doesn't seem to be there.--Pretty expensive title. :p

I think chest are just a money sink for GW and they are good even though it is a pain in the butt to never get good items outta them. Cept my 15-22 req 9 15^50 celestial sword. Anyway I suggest salvage anything under 100g like UC said and sell most things over 100g. I usually don't ID white items, but other things I do, in case it find "Highly Salvageable". And if you have a lot of money do what the other poster above me said and donate a little on newb islands. I got 21k when I went post for the first time and it has been one of the most memorable experiences of my GW playing time. It really makes someone's day. Good Luck with your decision.

Salvaging runes is the eaisiest choice. After IDing, go to the rune trader and see if the cost to by a rune is worth more than selling it. Never salvage runes that cost 100g to buy, as they sell for only 10-20g. After about 200g to buy a rune, and <= 100g to sell the armor, then I usually salvage the rune. It's amazing how many superior runes sell for <100g, but the armor their attached to sells for 300-400g.
