I was watching MSNBC and they are reporting that movies that show a character smoking in movies, said movie could receive an R rating. WTF??!! And, to beat all, it would depend upon the style in which the smoking is portrayed!!! The belief is that it will curb teen smoking. Ummmmmmmmmm okaaaaayyyy. And, yes, I'm one of those perceived-to-be-disgusting smokers.
You know what disgusts me? Parents slighting their parental duties in speaking to their children about the "horrors" of the world and wanna blame movies, TV, and video games for violence, pre-marital sex, and smoking. But, no, they'd much rather blame everyone(thing) else other than themselves on why their kids get crazy in HS or college. So, let's make Wolverine no longer smoke in comics. Let's remove the many cigarettes in betwixt Bogies fingers in the cinematic treasure known as "Casablanca." (No, they're not gonna be doing that, to my knowledge, but if they do I would not be surprised.)
Why all of a sudden (meaning, past 25 yrs.) is smoking so horribly awful. Of course, yes, the medical aspect can be horrible. I have lost family members to cancer and I am in no way being disrespectful to anyone who has lost a loved one due to cancer and are vehemently anti-smoking because of that. But why is there so much disrespect to smokers in our society? I've never went into a non-smoking restaurant and ranted and raved because of that fact. But non-smokers will.
Let us not forget, such horrible silver screen and small screen mess-ups that are beloved by kids and parents alike.
Spongebob: there's nothing horribly wrong with SBSP.....except for all the sexual innuendo!!!!!!!! But, yet, parents have no problem with allowing to have their children sit in front of the tube watching the show. Whatever happened to the original (meaning BETTER) He-Man and TMNT???????? But, yet smoking is "worse."
Disney's Emperor's New Groove: I absolutely LOVE this movie, but I laughed more at the fact that it had such blatant innuendo, I was in shock!!!!!! Disney is the poster child for blatant innuendo in the movie industry and yet, smoking is still "worse."
Batman and Robin: not only did they have the gall to promote and release such a cow-pat of a movie, it's worse than the previous two examples. To reiterate my point, I direct any interested to watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and select Ch.17 and listen to the witty exchange between Hooper X and Banky.
Though I get a bit off-topic (no pun intended) and long winded, I had to let this new MPAA rule be known to fellow gamers and movie-goers......and to rant about it also. :) I would like to know my fellow Ampers viewpoints on this subject.

I don't like smokers. Just who I am. But I totally agree with you, they don't need to change wolverine smoking or re-film Casablanca (A gorgeous cinematic experience if you ever get the chance to watch it). I feel for you man but I don't think the rule will last, much like trying to take violence out of videogames, we kids are the future, and we won't let it happen. Stay strong.

Casablanca is my favorite movie of all time. It's just the first classic movie I thought of that is adored and features lots of smoking. To me, Humphrey was John Wayne before John Wayne. I just think that some of the rules that are applied to our society anymore are unwarranted. I guess that's why I've found that when I get angry at society I watch Fight Club......even though I'm watching Jay and Bob since I looked up the chapter I referred to.

All I have to say is, this is probably the stupidest thing ever. People make their own choices, some of them are good and some of them are not. You only become addicted to something if you let it, I see people that are addicted to drugs, alcohol and such as weak minded, NOT sick. Everyone is able to make their own choices people put those choices out for you. You choose your path may it be good or bad, also a teenager is more than capable to distinguish what's good or bad. I say screw with this "rating" thing, if people want to smoke their lives away it's their choice, but I think there are way more important things to be taken care of... *hint* poverty, orphans , wars etc...
Ps: I just want to make it clear that I do NOT hate or even care as matter of fact about smokers. I was a smoker myself started when I was 11 years old (now 22) I quit when I was 18, because I realized that it was a waste of money and I hated waking up in the morning all tired and feeling drunk... a pack a day hurts...

I have a very close friend, and if someone smokes around him he goes into asthmatic shock. That's why it has to be regulated. I don't agree that a movie should receive an R rating though.

To start off I love the avatar (married with children FTW).
Now to the movies - This is absurd, it is another example of how the government is so busy protecting us from ourselves that they lose the big picture. Stupid things like this are why no one takes responsibility for their actions, wake up world its the Paris-Hilton generation where kids are spoiled rotten and not taught respect and basic manners. It is only going to get worse from here on out, just wait pretty soon they will issue an 'R' rating if people are driving gasoline powered cars instead of the green-powered electric cars.
Lastly - I don't smoke and I don't like to be around it. Now that that is said I think it becomes my responsibility to avoid places where smoking is socially acceptable. I won't go into a bar and start complaining about all the smoke, If I am standing outside a building and someone lights a smoke I wont ask them to put it out, if it really becomes an issue to me I can always leave. There are some places though where it is just plain rude to light up a smoke. In a restruant for example there is a room full of people around you, what gives you the right to pollute their airspace, I say go have your smoke outside. Public busses, trains, and other areas where people congregate are IMO in the same boat as a restruant. Do what you want when your outside, by yourself, or if you are in places where it is expected that there will be smoke> Sometimes I think smokers get up on their high horse and say I can smoke wherever I want and make it an issue of peronal freedom, when in reality it is just a matter of common decency.
ok need to breathe (I feel like that angry German Kid now)

umm.. Most people smoke because someone in their family smokes or a friend smokes.
I use to have very bad asthma until I started smoking.. made me gag but that helped my lungs get stronger.
When I went to a bar for my 22 birthday. Sign said smokers welcome and all that and some non-smoker came in and complained from all the smoke and his lungs hurt. The bartender just looked at him and said.. dun like it.. why in the heck did you enter in a place where you know there is going to be smoke?
That is like a person who has a problem with over drinking going to a bar. They say they don't want to drink but go into a bar? Don't lead your self into a place you know you will not like.
Oh.. I smoked for 6 years and quit over a month ago. dang things cost to dang much :(

I have a real good friend who has asthma as well. He almost died at one of our football (American) games; they had just cut the grass and on the opening kickoff he got a face full of grass. He's allergic to smoke. I do not recall ever smoking around him, even outside. I'm very respectful of those that do not like it.
Really, I don't have a problem with smoking being regulated; though it stinks going to a non-smoking bar. A person's choices in life should not be brought on to others, whether it be smoking or religious preferences, for example. I'm really big on respect, so there are minimal times where if someone's dissing me cause I smoke, why should I have to take it, know what I mean?
I like the differing viewpoints, though. At least, so far, I'm not alone in thinking that this new stipulation is silly.
Edit: Thanx JB. I've been wondering for the past year if anyone would realize. Ed Bundy was my hero growing up. Greatest show ever!

wellll, i dont like morals police, regulation attempts by whatever wing they are, but i doubt this will affect much...
1) doubt it will be retroactive, hence, casablanca
2) how many G rated movies you see with smoking anyway? Most G material now days is so cleansed of everything, I doubt it will have any impact, just pleasing the moral majority *rolleyes*

Wasnt it AL Bundy? lol i love married with children watch it everynight at 12
and about the rated R for smoking, i think its a dumb idea. im the type that hardly even keeps friends that smoke or do drugs, yet, i dont care if its on screen, often times it sets a mood or it displys a characteristic.. i also dont think it will last long

Movies geting an R rating because they view sigarets is just stupid and waste off paperwork, except in VERY extreme situation (Constantine).
And also I do not believe charging parents with extra taxes or sorts just because the smoke isn't the proper way (which is going on in my country :S). Most people start smoking around the ages off what, 15-16? Then why charge the older persons with this, around this age parents or family don't have the biggest influence, anymore, teachers and friend's/fellow students are the bigger part. I am the living, breathing truth off that: my father, most off my uncle's and an aunt or 2 smokes but I don't and so does my sister.
It is also come to my attention that most smokers are really polite when it comes to their surrounding, they are usually more aware off it and will more easily adept to it (aka having a smoke outside, wait for a while or simply a smokechamber).

You're right, my bad. At the time I was thinking Ed O'Neil, who, of course, portrayed Al Bundy.
Uh-oh...I just put 2-n-2 together on the Ed Bundy thing. I promise all it was NOT a Freudian slip. Er....um....yeah, I'm an idiot. XD

Don't everyone hate the MPAA, RIAA or any other agency that tries to regulate to protect something but ends up just being some cash cow?
None of these regulations do anything but net a profit for the company and now they have a taste of it and want more so the little guy "consumer" gets kittened. Consumers should be number 1 concern but eh .. seems the wallet is.
