INSANE loading/decompress times

So I got the game maybe a week ago. I enjoy it very much. BUT every time I go into a new area, the loading time is absolutely incredible. In some areas it gets up to 45 minute loading times.

What possible hardware problem could I have?

Also, I've read that I can pre-load everything if I just do some kind of "-image" tail on my game link or in the command prompt. Will that solve my computer's terrible decompress times?

Pertinent info: Comp is a 2500+ XP Barton core, 1gig Corsair XMS memory DDR400, 160gb Toshiba DMA100 HDD, GeForce 6600GT AGP card, and I don't know what else would matter all that much.

I noticed when watching a friend play that he decompresses in just a few seconds. Not 30-45 minutes like me.

What can I do?

Thanks in advance.

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

First off, WELCOME TO GAMEAMP

The first thing that comes to mind is to defragment your hard drive. I know for me it speeds up after I do that. Also, are you downloading these areas as well as decompressing or just decompressing. If you are downloading the data then the next time you go there it should be faster.

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

Seeing as you just got the game there is a huge amount of data that needs to be downloaded for the area. So, if you let the "-image" trick work until the end, the loading time will greatly reduce.

Also, I'd like to know if you also have those amazing load times for areas that you have already visited, if not do the above. If yes, I'm sure somebody will know what to do. I'm not that much of an expert on comps. :)

Hope this helps!

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

Create another shortcut, and at the end of the path, put -image

When you load that shortcut, it will download everything that needs to be downloaded. Then use your old shortcut to load the game. :)

This like can help you more. :)

Yeah once I go back it loads instantly. Except if I go somewhere with a party then it takes awhile to load because apparently 5-15 minutes of decompression is what it takes to run out into the world with another player.

Don't worry about it, its not a hardware problem and will usually start to go away the more you play through the game(even for areas you haven't visited yet). I had that same difficulty after I did a complete reinstall of Guild Wars some time ago (yay for Full System Restore of OS).

I don't know about the image thing, maybe someone else does.
EDIT: ^ Looks like Kanna knows

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

Every time you visit a new area, you're downloading a bunch of new objects (trees, water, landscape, creatures, etc.)

So if you download a certain tree in one map, you don't have to do it again for the next map that shares that tree skin.

firstly,
WELCOME

As for posting, go to the proper forum while logged in and click a button called 'New Topic' up in the right-hand corner near the search box.

I'm no where near informed enough on DNS to really say anything for certain, but usually DNS requests are handled by your ISP, so its probably their fault. More than likely, they did something stupid to the servers or the program configuration files(like changing the TTL(time to live) values to something stupid) in an attempt to cut costs a little. But as I said, I don't know a whole lot about DNS and this is just my guess based on what little I know.

EDIT: Gah!!! Colors didn't work

Another gig of RAM would be GREATLY beneficial. As recommended before, do a defrag of your computer also. You really should not be getting times like those.

do this, it helps A LOT, it'll take about an hour-2 if you just bought the game before you can play again, but when you play, all you have to do is decompress and you'll be in!

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

For what it's worth, I did the -image trick and I'm a little over 2 hours into the process. It's at 55%. So this'd better be worth it :-p

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

Oh, it will be. ^_^ I highly suggest making a back up of that file, if you every do a system restore too. x.x

You might be loading slow, cause of all the background downloading that is going on on a fresh install of Guild Wars. With -image, you are downloading EVERYTHING that has been patched, since that install you have was created. You will notice a considerable difference. :)

RE: INSANE loading/decompress times

Well, theres one thing I ALWAYS do after an update happens in the game.. ' -image ' and if I load a bit slow, defragment. Defragmenting might have to be done every month, or however long.. Thats how it is for me anyway.
