| Gamer Conventions and Fan Events .... Ever attend one? |
|
|
|
Well it is that time of year when companies start to promote products and fan joy at various events. At this time perhaps many of us are wondering are these events fun or a stark realization that you have a hobby out of hand. So have any of you attended a fan event? Any tales to tell? Or are you just totally put of by the idea? It is ok come from lurking in the shadows and share your thoughts.

I never have but I would like to check out some of the EQ2 fan events and meet some of the people involved. But those kinds of things aren't usually held where I am and travel to them isn't a viable option atm. :-)

In the past I have been to Amiga computer shows, comic conventions, and a verison of GenCon but have really missed out on attending any kind of live MMORPG fan event and would love to participate if one comes to my part of the world but at this time for financial and other reasons travel is more difficult for me but I am hoping that improves in a year or two.
So anyone been to any events of this type they want to talk about here?

***shivers in corner*** LARP events scare me....
Amiga? SRSLY? like Comador? are they still around like making stuff?
ok on topic my brother makes me go to comic shows, tournaments and all that jazz. I even competed in a Smash Brothers tournament, we hold on of the largest ones in the country at my former university. People call from all over the country. They also hold a tournament for RPG card games, and LAN games which includes Quake, Half Life, Diablo and a ton of others. It was a lot of fun, bring your own box event. We got to play with a ton of people we didnt know and the competative atmosphere feeds my already competative side. It was awesome beating those guys (being the only girl was HAWT). Anyway they are a lot of fun, I loved it. Didnt win but hell I had a good time and we got free t-shirts and those were cool.
and again the LARP people were scary...though some of the costumes were cool...but some of the costumes were ZOMG i cant believe she wore that in public...eww
but eh it was funny.

Yep in the 70's and early 80's I was going to comic shows. Amiga computer shows (yep like Commodore but more like a Mac than a C=64) and the like were a mid 90's up until 2001 event. In the late 80's I used to watch some folks spar with full armor and bamboo or blunted weapons, these shows were put on by the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). I also used to go to a Ren. fest that had live jousting tournaments. Oh and I forgot another true mark upon my geek tabard was earned by going to several Babylon 5 conventions....

I thought the true mark of geekdom was the Star Trek conventions dressed as a klingon?

Oooo Speaking of Live Events I got my little BlizzCon flyer from Blizzard in my mailbox this morning. Looks like a good time for fans of Blizzards many fine games.
Boy but like live concerts the price sure seem to have come up in the last few years. The same goes for developer conferences seems like not that long ago you could expect to pay between $16-20 per day and now these things commonly run in the $80-100 range and I think last year the developers conference in Austin was a hefty $320 per day.
Going on a momentary diversion. Has anyone been to DragonCon in Atlanta and if so what did you think?

I used to be into the Wing Commander game and enjoyed some of the fan created add ons and most of the people doing those seemded to gravitate to Dragon Con so a few times I was very tempted to go. Along the lines of meeting people in real life I had a few live events for my bbs back in the late 80's and a few folks had some rude awakings at those things when they would find out that the person that had been sharing suggestive mail an chat with was not as they had imagined. All and all those were great fun though and still go on to this day but are down to only a few of the old timers now.

It's usually a great experience meeting people you know online in person. When I was in Miami, I was involved with a Freenet that would periodically get together. It's always interesting to see if people are similar in real life as they are online.
Now, most of my net connections are people I know in real life. It's a very different experience now than it was in 1993 when I first got online.
Oddly enough, I both miss those days and don't at the same time. :)

*giggles* Oh boy is that ever so true! I spent a lot of time in the early 90s dialing into BBS's. (I have a list here somewhere with the FidoNet listing printed out on my old dot matrix printer.) On one local BBS here we had a weekly coffee night going and would fill up one of the cheap restaurants in town for the evening. There were upwards of 25 or more people and some of them sure were not what they had been thought to be online. :-) We also had dances, camping trips, and bowling nights. It was great fun!

I have never met any virtual friends in actual life yet. It might be fun, but it might also break some of the magic as well. I don't know, I guess I'll find out one day. Or not.
As for conventions, I have been several times to E3 in Los Angeles. Especially the first time it was really amazingly fun! Three days of pure gaming heaven. All the great games at my fingers. And being surrounded by thousands of like minded gamer geeks, developers, semi-celebrities. Quite amazing. I don't know if the it was me or the industry as a whole, but every following year the magic was getting less and less. All the big games were behind closed doors for VIP's only, or with long queues.
The last year we went we actually got bored after a day and a half and in stead it had become just an excuse to party for a few days in LA. Which was already from the first visit one of the great joys. We always stayed at a shady motel near Hollywood Boulevard. LA is just a weird town. Unfortunately I now live a bit too far away to fly all the way to LA for a few days, especially since E3 is not much of anything anymore.
For work I have been a couple of times to the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. And what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so I can't say much about that, except that the convention was definitely the most boring part of these trips.

Oh Man Phedre you got to go E3, well that is the cause of some envy to be sure. :) I have been very very lucky in that all the folks I have met virtually then met in real life have been really great folks but as we all know this is not always the case. We have all heard lots of stories where these meeting lead to some real let downs with regard to expectations not being met.

I went to fainfaire last year in Atlanta. It was a lot of fun. There were breakout sessions for EQ2 that covered crafting/adventuring/new changes and more. One of the best parts was that they rented out a club one night, that had a live band on one floor, and heavy medal karaoke (better than it sounds) on the second floor. While you were there you could also hang out with the developers while you watch EQ2 on the big screens around the bar and drink free beer.(woot!)
Some of it was a little to geeky for me like the costume contest or the live events, but if anyone gets the chance to go, you should. I wanted to go again this year but I really didn’t want to fly out to Las Vegas in August.
