Making a new mage

Ok, so i need some answers fon a few things.

First, Human or gnome. Humans get more spirit, diplomacy, and stealth detection. Gnomes get increased mana, escape artist, and look so ADORABLE.

Also im considering either fire, arcane, or ice. All seem viable for there own reasons, and i plan on being able to solo, yet able to add signifigantly to a team.

And last, why a mage instead of a warlock. I am also intrested in warlocks, so the same things above apply to locks.

thanks in advance

RE: Making a new mage

You should go Warlock because Evil is just more fun....... j/k

I'm a tad bit biased, to the Warlocks myself. But the convo about Mages has already been raging today, and the Goddess of Mages, Dru, has spoken. Read this forum post about some of the pros and cons, it has links to some guides too:

Today's Mage discussions

As for Warlock vs Mage. I'll elaborate in a bit. Check out that post while I think on a good answer.

Warlock vs Mage

Firstly, graphics and animations.

Mages have Fire, Frost and Arcane spells in varying colors of Reds, Blues and off Whites.

Warlocks have Fire and Shadow in Reds and Purple/Green combos.

You would be suprised at how much this beginning issue is going to make a difference. You have to watch these animations for 70 levels, you had better pick what you enjoy watching. I've seen a million Shadow Bolts by now, and I still think it looks cool!

Playstyle and your personality. Mages are tapping from the Elmental Plane for power in their respective trees, whereas Warlocks are pulling their power from the depths of Hell. Which one of these fits your personality?

Warlocks use pets to mitigate aggro in similar ways to a Hunter and their pets. Mages mitigate aggro by turning things into barnyard animals(totally hilarious IMHO). Which one of these fits your personality?

Both classes have different enemies that they can crowd control. But the Warlock class has more direct control with Seduce - Humanoids, Banish - Demons and Elementals, Enslave Demon - Demons. Where Mages have Frost Nova - Almost everything, and Sheep - Humanoids.

If you role play any at all, then personality plays into your selection big time. Even though I do not RP hard core, I choose Warlock because of my personality. I can't be evil in the real world, but I play it up well in MMORPGs! But you could be a hellbound Mage, that falls onto you.

Character appearance. The Warlock gear plays on their evil and corrupt hearts, and looks the part, wheras Mages have a bit more of a stately look in their tier geir pieces.

As you can tell, visuals mean a lot to me, the big question is, what means a lot to you?

Beyond that, they are very similar classes. Cloth wearing, ranged casters.

*EDIT* I thought of a little more.......

With every class, there are skills in your spell sets that benifit the team. I personally think the Warlock set is a little more selfish, where the Mage set has more party buffs like Arcane Intellect, detect magic, amplfy magic, dampen magic, free food and water that more of the team can benifit from. What your job on a team, large or small, will be can change a bit between the two classes.

Warlocks get to make Healthstones for the team to use. That is one team support feature.

Just like the animations that you have to watch for 70 levels, you need to pick the team support role that you can have fun with for 70 levels.
