A few months ago, in the middle parts of February, I just sort of stopped playing Guild Wars. Now, I'm considering getting back into the game again, but I'd like people's opinions on whether or not various problems with the ingame community and the game itself have been fixed or have fixed themselves. The biggest problems that I remember there being were these:
1. Due to the availability of heroes and henchmen, people simply were not making full human groups anymore. Even in the FoW, DoA, elite missions, and to a lesser extent the UW, people preferred heroes to real people.
2. Gold was highly important for gear, but not easy to earn on regular quests. Extensive farming was necessary to outfit each character.
3. In PvP, a few select builds were king. Most everyone used one of the simpler to use builds and those who chose not to use those were pushed to the sidelines. PvP was stagnating, big time.
4. Also for PvP, the faction-farming aspect of Factions made large guilds very nearly a necessity for accessing the better features of that game. Due to this, large guilds became the norm, and smaller, more friendly guilds seemed to have pretty much died out.
5. In both PvE and PvP, people in general had simply stopped talking to one another. You could sit in towns and not see a thing besides traders hawking wares, and if someone asked a question in local chat they'd either get no answer or yelled at.
What I'm looking for is ways that these things have gotten better, and more importantly WHY these things have improved. For instance, I don't want to hear "well, you can farm gold easily now," I want to hear "gold is easier to come by because..." In actual fact, I don't want to hear about farming at all, unless it's to say that few people do it anymore... Gold was always easy to farm for if you had any patience at all, but I don't want to play again just to farm for three hours a day.

sorry havent got much time, so i will only answer 3#
in PvP you builds like SF and zergway have died out, and times have recycled, we are back to spikes such as ritualist, paragon and ranger, you still get the occasional spiritway or hero team but mostly it is balanced or spike builds now.

Well, that not all true, PvP is pretty much EVERYTHING imaginable now. Just get a pvp guild if you dont like PuG's that dont know what they're doing like i did :D
Approving guides since November 2007.

1. Nothing has changed in that respect. With the release of HM more PuG groups are forming for vanquishing or ss/lb farming, but you still won't see any LFG's in smaller outposts or major cities.
2. Solo farming has been dealt a forceful blow. Gold is much harder to come by, but because the nerf has deflated the economy items are becoming cheaper or easier to farm in groups.
3. PvP has been this way since about 3 months after release after people discovered that random skills in PuG's don't go far. The builds have changed, but the attitude and basic structure behind BuildWars has not.
4. If you go back to factions you will still see the corporate alliances. Guilds in Nightfall are not as relevant, and can be much more casual.
5. Ever heard the expression "People never change"? Things change, people don't.
The why behind most of my explination is Hard Mode or AT's. Those are the biggest changes since Feb.
Best of Luck! I hope you enjoy farming and grinding for titles because that is all there is left to do! (besides wait for GW:EN/ GW2)

1. As far as I have noticed people try to avoid at all costs taking heroes into the elite areas since heroes still "steal" drops. It is true that there is very little help in doing quests but then I never bothered with questing with people even before the addition of heroes.
2. With the addition of Hard Mode which is just fun to play around in, in the earlier areas and loot scaling I have found it easier to get money, heck I have days where characters I am moving through story line get more money than the character I am using for farming. And I have a short attention span and get bored or frustrated easily and I still make money fast and easy probably have a lot more if I didnt want so many materials but then you get a lot of the basic materials fast too which is really nice.
3. I don't pvp much but when I poke my head into Heroes Ascent I notice everything from random groups that don't care what they get so long as they are having fun to the cookie cutter this supposedly wins every time group.
4. As for factions I have always been a part of a three man guild and we have no problems and tons of fun in factions and I'm trying to get the title (not trying very hard though) In all honesty I dont think its changed much but then I never wanted to own a town so no clue what to say there.
5. People still primarily hawk there wares but that has been going on since I started (which was a few months after prophicies came out) As for the asking questions you get some people willing to help (such as myself), others call you a noob (but its not like those people know the answer any way) But that is just the way these people are in real life. Actaully I have seen a rise in random conversations in major cities but thats cause some people like to talk :)
Well hope this helps. Sorry if it doesn't.

1. I have to claim guilty on this one myself. I never join PuGs anymore except for elite missions. With heroes that I can customize and gear and control, why take an unknown factor?
2. Prices have dropped significantly (ectos run 5.5k-ish, Ragos Staff 50k-ish, Sup Vig rune 17k-ish). Solo farming for merchant loot is gone, green/gold/rares farming is still available. Hard mode is king for farming.
3. I don't PvP besides the occasional AB. From that, I can say that you do still have cookie cutter builds en masse, but occasionally you get the oddball guy with the 'Huhwha..?' build. There's still stereotyping and expectations, as in all parts of the game.
4. Faction farming is not as big as it once was. There's still large town-controlling alliances, but as we all knew, once Nightfall came out, interest in maintaining Factions faction would wane. They still exist though, but at least from my viewpoint not as prevelant.
5. I've met some very nice people in game and on forums, but there's aalways been a sizable amount of ruthlessly callous players, moreso than I ever saw on my old game. Not everyone is a scammer or griefer, but I don't go to towns to socialize, I just kind of stick with the nice people I do find occasionally.

In regards to accessing elite areas in Factions, it no longer is only available to guilds owning capitol cities. (I havent tried it yet) You can now exchange 1k faction (I think) for an elite area access scroll, which when used takes you to that elite area (I believe). Maybe someone else can shed more light on that since I have not yet tried this feature.
In regards to the community, I can only speak for myself. I try to help out guys who are asking honest questions about the game and try to help them out with their problem. Ive even reimbursed some poor guy who was scammed out of a few k so the game is not ruined for a new player and to show him a good side. I also made a good GW friend that day.
Anyways I still enjoy the game. Welcome back?

on the major nerf note, i really hope anet does a skill balance soon. they have not since early in factions and pvp is getting really dry because of it. if any of you employees at anet read this, we need a skill balance for the sake of pvp!

1. I think the reliance on heros only grows less the higher in the game you are, DoA always requires a full team of real players BUT teams follow certain builds so if your prepared to play any 1 of 3 types of Monk skill set, 1 Ele skillset , 1 of 2 tank builds or a BiP Necro its gonna be hard getting in a group, it's become alot like BP groups in ToPK. I can't say I've ever witnessed groups going into FoW, Urgoz, The Deep or UW with heros. Some, if only a little, of the novelty of heros has worn off and most players, by the time they get further into the game, start to realise that humans are actually better.
2. Gold is just so much easier to come by, do any quest or mission in Hard Mode and you will notice quite a difference in terms of loot. Hard Mode has definately leveled the playing field as far as the gap between 'hard core farmers' and 'casual players' is concerned, prices have dropped massively. Loot scaling has helped there too. You just don't need as much gold these days unless you really must have that uber rare skin with max mods....
3. + 4. Not into PvP or faction farming so I have no comment :)
5. People do seem a little more friendly, random conversations in the major cities do exist and i'm glad to say they aren't all flame fests, there is still alot of ignorant stupidity rearing it's ugly head but hey that happens in RL so it's to be expected.
