Hey all,
I was thinking of starting a new character when I reactivate my account in a little while. The only two things that I've decided on are one, it has to be a hero character and two, it has to be on the server that the GameAmp Alliance is on (whatever server that is).
I was considering an Energy Blast/Energy Manipulation Blaster since I haven't tried those power sets yet but I'm still a little bit rusty. Just toss out any thoughts or suggestions you might have.
Thanks,
Wigwom

Well, the "official" Gameamp server is Triumph. Most, if not all of the GA members have at least one character running around on there.
Also, to help you choose your AT and powers, here's a way you can look at it:
Tankers: Melee fighters with the highest HP of the 5 main hero ATs. Their attacks tend to be slower to recharge and cost more then Scrappers so they tend to have average damage output (lower then Scrappers and Blasters, higher then Controllers and Defenders), though their attacks themselves aren't much weaker then Scrappers' (if at all).
Their main role in a team though, since their primary power sets are shields and defensive powers, is to protect the team and put your HP to use, so to speak.
Their high HP and good defensive powers allow them to solo fairly well. Although they're not the strongest AT offensively, they're still pretty strong and can hold their own in a fight.
Scrappers: These guys are the opposite of Tankers (though, they get different power sets other then Invulnerability). They're also melee fighters but, as their primary power set being offensive powers would imply, their job tends to be to deal out as much damage as humanly possible. They're able to achieve this because, not only do they get more attacks, but they tend to recharge faster and cost less then tankers' attacks.
On paper, this AT is the easiest to solo as. Great damage output, a defensive secondary power set, and having the second highest HP of the hero ATs means that, not only can they kill quickly, but they can take a good amount of damage as well. Also, they tend not to have the endurance troubles tankers do.
Defenders: These guys tend to be the team protectors. While Tankers protect the team by drawing their attention and physically taking the hits, Defenders protect the team in more indirect ways such as healing, shields, various buffs, or whatever the specific set you choose concentrates on. Their secondary set is made up of offensive ranged blasts. This means that while their primary objective tend to be to protect the team and keep them alive etc., they can throw in some support damage as well from time to time.
When soloing, they can keep a reasonably solid attack and defense up. On the one hand, their primaries allow them to protect themselves while on the other hand they're able to attack from a safe distance.
Controllers These are the least offensive players in the game, villains included. This is because neither their primary nor secondary sets are offensively-based. Therefore these are the ultimate support characters. Their primary power set gives them the ability to prevent (and/or slow) the enemies from attacking, sometimes dealing minimal damage while doing it. Their secondary set is like the Defender primary, providing defensive protection for themselves and others.
While they're the ultimate defensive AT, their lack of an offensive power set can make soloing difficult. Because they take longer then other ATs to defeat things, disposing of groups can be a lengthy process. However, on the plus side, it can be extremely difficult to be killed since they never actually have to be close to the enemies and can keep the enemies away very effectively.
Blasters: These are sort of the opposite of Controllers. Their primary sets are offensive blasts and their secondary sets are composed of close-range attacks with a few holds here and there. In other words, they have a wide array of both close-ranged and long-ranged attacks, as well as many AoEs and cone attacks. This comes at a price, though, which comes in the form of a complete lack of shields and the lowest HP of the hero ATs.
Their massive offensive power means Blasters can solo very easily...as long as you stay out of their range. Yes, it's true that they can dispose of groups of enemies easily enough, but their low HP and lack of defensive powers makes them the weakest AT in the game, defensively.
Now, keep in mind that slotting can change your character's role in a team. For example, putting slots that you could put into your tankers' shields into your attacks to reduce their recharge time and end cost would make them more Scrapper-y while still having their high HP and primary armor sets.
Depending on your slot allocation, you can turn a Tanker more Scrapper-y, a Scrapper more Tanker-y, a Blaster more Scrapper-y, or a Defender more Blaster-y.
It's important though, that if you do this you inform your team so they know what to expect from you as a member. You don't want your team to depend on you to take all the hits if you want to play your Tanker as a Scrapper.

Any of the combinations can be enjoyable, it just depends on the type of player you are. If you haven't played for a while and want something a bit more straight forward, then I would stick with a Scrapper or Blaster. I have a number of different blasters that I have tried and I really like my Energy/Energy Blaster. I love shooting the energy blast and watching the villains go flying. Lots of knockback with this set.
Each of Blaster sets has it advantages, but energy is a pretty straight forward single target player. It is a good starting point to get back into the game.
If you look at my history (link in my signature) you will see a lot of characters around the 8 - 14 level area. I love trying new combinations and trying them for a while. Try the Energy/Energy, if you don't like it (or aren't sure) start again with a different combo. That is the beauty of this game.
Good luck and let us know if you need anything.

The Energy/Energy is a good "starter" Blaster combo because it's a good solo'able combo for those times you can't find a team and want to keep working your missions.
It has a lot of good power, and the dual damage types of energy and smashing in the attacks means that if the enemy is resistant to one type, they are almost never resistant to the other.
I've always liked the animations of the Energy set too.

yes, the En/En Blaster is a good choice to play. You can build this set in several different ways to suit your playing needs.
If you like up close and personal, then this makes for the perfect Blapper. The secondary offers some incredible Damage dealing melee attacks!
If you want to stay away from the melee area, you can do that as well. The primaries offer some great ranged attacks, that come with the Knockback ability. This will help keep mobs further away from you. If they have to pick themselves up off the ground, then they can't attack you in that timeframe, allowing you to wail away.
If you want a bit of both, then there you have it. You can use your ranged attacks to knock down your target, then run up and hit him with a nice damage dealing melee attack and move away before they get up. Rinse and repeat. It's also good to have a melee attack or two for Blasters, for that just in case moment.
Oh, En seconday comes equipped with Conserve Energy, a must for this type of blaster. Helps mitigate the endurance drain of the power set.

Well now you're guys starting going in to a spot you don't want to. I tank with my Defender and he's my higher toon lol so to my play style is whatever I feel like changing that character into.
I've actually had a lot of time to think about my new character lately and earlier I was thinking of an average athletic hero, but now I'm thinking of moving towards a wolf-typed one. Now I'm drifting towards Sonic/Energy so what are your thoughts on that one? (Just tell me upfront if energy sucks or not).

lol..... yet another Tankfender! You are not alone.....lol
I've heard that Sonic is a decent Blaster set but I'm one of those people that the effects still make me queasy. Even after they toned it down a lot. I find it impossible to run with them. You may not have a problem with it.
Both the primary and secondary Energy options are great. It'll all whittle down to which animations you are after. I would imagine that Sonic/Energy would make for some seriously nasty debuffs if you had boost power in the build.

Nrg/Nrg is a great blaster set.
The Energy secondary is (I believe) the highest DPS melee set for blasters. I could be wrong there, but I'm fairly certain I'm right. Also, the energy secondary gets Build Up at level 4. The earliest build up in the game!
The Energy Primary is also extremely good for single target damage. It gets the snipe very early on, which is extremely cool. It also has some good Knockback. Also, the energy damage type (Elec, Energy and Sonic all do some energy damage, with Elec doing more than the others) is not resisted by too many folks. Skulls, Freaks and some CoT are actually vulnerable to it! Which makes for some nice leveling.
City of Heroes/Villains
Onion - L50 - Katana/Super Reflexes/Body Mastery Scrapper
Scotch Bonnet Girl - L50 - Fire Aura/Fire Melee/Pyre Mastery Tanker
RonJ73 - L50 - Stone/Energy Aura Brute
Aurora Australis - L50 - Willpower/Energy Melee Tanker

I have tried both, never together though. I have worked each up into the teens. They just keep getting better and better. The EM primary was a bit of a let down at first, BUT, once I got an ACC in there and a couple damage slots, woooo hoooo. Good stuff! Although heavy on the single tgt attacks, the one AoE "Energy Torrent", with proper positioning (putting multiple baddies between you and your target) yields some pretty good AoE results.
EM melee, another 2 thumbs up. Great damage output for when they get in close, if whatever primary you choose doesnt take them down on their trip to you, this secondary sure will. :D
Tank'ns my Bidness and Bidness is GOOD!
