Computer problems

Ok... so far i would like to say im back to guild wars! but a problem has came up where it made me quit for a while.

A blue screen pops up almost everytime i play guild wars.

Saying "dumping physical memory" or something like that.

I have recently perchased nightfall (good game, just started on it) and the problems still occur!

I've checked my memory and i have 28% of free space, i tried defrag and thats about it.

Can somebody help me?

It cant be my video card because i've been playing guild wars a long time (when the fist game came out) and then sometime after i play guild wars a long time, a blue creen pops up. thats what made me quit. then i came back for nightfall, same thing! Could someone plase help me?

The first blue screen never poped up, it poped up about 5 or 6 months after i've been playing guild wars.

RE: Computer problems

What kind of graphics chip are you using? Is it an intergraded chip, or is it an actual Graphics Card?

First, I'd like to specify something, memory is RAM of anykind, not your harddrive. Harddrive space is called storage.

With that, things get narrow'd down: if it's only happening when you boot GWs up, than its probablly that the RAM on your video card is insufficient or corrupt in some way. If it happens randomly, than you might have bad RAM. Best thing for you to do is to take it to a tech, and try to replicate the problem. Or when the bluescreen comes up again, try and write down everything thats on the screen, and take that to a tech.

Edit: Physical Memory only applies to sticks of RAM if you're using an intigrated video card. If you have a high end video card that you can take out of the computer, than it MIGHT have physical memory, some newer cards have physical memory installed into them.

RE: Computer problems

GW is always crashing on me. I can't afford to upgrade my machine yet, so I just do the best I can and put up with it. I've been getting the 'Repairing Data Archive' screen for ages now, and I almost always send the error report thing when it crashes, not that it helps.

Have you tried this?

Also, if you haven't already, do all the cleaning/checking things you can on your PC, such as CCleaner, Cleanup, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, RegscrubXP, HijackThis, Virus Check, etc.. Then perhaps pay a visit to somewhere like PC Pitstop or anywhere else you know/trust to check your computer online..

If none of that helps, maybe someone with more knowledge will reply and be able to help you.

Good luck!

:)

EDIT: They already did! - whilst I was typing :o

RE: Computer problems

Sounds like you have a memory error either on the videocard (or integrated) or the RAM, one of the two is causing problems.

Hard drive space doesn't really matter. Should do what the above post states.

Now if been getting this new problem, while i was playing guild wars for an hour or so, a black screen with a blinking space on the top left, then i tried to play again, black screen comes up again but this time its like all of the graphics is all squiguly (dont know how to spell it) and all those times, i have to restart my computer.

Im re-installing guild wars right now.

And this never happends to any of my other games. only this one.

This sounds alot like a video card issue. Try updating your video card drivers and make certain that you are using the latest DirectX package.

You should also do some maintenance on your machine (ie. defrag, virus/spyware scan, dusting) as the most common computer problems are the easily avoided ones.

Hope you get your problem fixed :D

RE: Computer problems

For a pretty nice spyware and viruscheck try AVG. Pretty decent and free. I suspect a worm of some kind and/or spyware. Don't worry, that's common.

That is usually the trigger on which things like these happen. Also empty you temp directory(ies) and your cache, after that defrag again.

Besides that, yes, check your video drivers etc. And when all this does not work, share the output of dxdiag with us (click start, execute, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter)

Memory: memory doesn't cost a thing anymore. 20% free is very very low. You'd probably want to upgrade your mem to 1gig. This works wonders.

regards,
Michiel

By your reply, I'm under the assumption that you aren't very familiar with computers and their upkeep. Computers are an investment (similar to cars) and as such require weekly maintenance to keep them working at their best.

When I say dust, I mean, physically dust the inside of your machine by using a can of compressed air. Dust can build up on various internal components and actually trap heat. Heat plays a major role in system instability and can actually shorten your computers lifespan. Make sure you computer is in a well ventilated area.

Regarding upgrading your video card, you'll have to find out the manufacturer of your video card and see if they offer updated drivers. Once you have installed the latest video drivers, you should also check to see if you have the most recent version of DirectX on your machine.

There are hundreds, if not, thousands of online articles pertaining to basic computer maintenance as well as guides to help you upgrade/maintain your machine.

RE: Computer problems

updating your video card means putting in a better one... Dusting your pc means disconnecting the thing, unplug the power, screw it open en use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust from inside the thing (do NOT touch the components with the hose, keep it over it), en blow (preferably with compressed air, else with a little straw and do it yourself) through the power supply. Seen power supplies with more dust in them then a house full of germand shepards having just brawled with a dozen cats for several days....

regards,
Michiel

RE: Computer problems

I had a similar problem that started about 6 months after the release of Prophecies... was going worst and worst and last week I was not able to play GW without loosing the video.

My problem was Video card overheating...

Solution 1 : Remove dust from video card fan and heatsink. The problem was solve but at some point, it do start again every 3 weeks or so (no, my house is not dirty...).

Permanent solution : I changed my video card last week-end after a year with this problem. Guess what : No more problem...

I had a ATI 9800 pro 128mb of RAM, went for a NVIDIA with 512Mb of RAM. And wow, I could play for more than 20 mins without having to reboot because I lost the video display. Im so happy right now

RE: Computer problems

Well, i dust it about 3 days ago, only the outside was dusty, not the inside. Well, im gonna try to get more memory by putting some files into my flashdrive that holds 1gig. ill report if this will work or not.

Edit: i boosted up my memory space and now i have 30% of free space remaining. Is that good enough? And i will try to dust again from the inside.

RE: Computer problems

sounds good. And you did check the inside. The overheating is actually a good remark. What you could do is leave the case open when playing and feel every few minutes if the videocard does not radiate too much heat. When you can fry an egg on it, it's getting to hot.

In that case, get yourself a extra fan and build it in next to the videocard (processor side).

Michiel
