City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft. Yes that's rght, after my three months paid run out, I'm stopping my WoW account for a while. I just can't give up City of Heroes, not by a long shot. I've never been apart of a game so immersive, addicting, and fun as this. I've been with this site ever since I started my account back up last July, and I love it here and the the rest of it's awesome community. My friend is dropping his CoH account for World of Warcraft when his time runs out in late April. If you ask me he is insane. The Dev's are constantly talking to the players, giving help whenever it's needed, and updating CoH with free new content every three to five months, not to mention the comic (and I'm really excited about the new start it's taking in May) and I will be sticking with City of Heroes as long as I am able too. I've been with it since Beta and I see no reson for turning back, I love this game and always will.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Well, to be honest, I have subs to all three big games right now...CoH, EQ2 and WoW. My heart belongs to CoH, but, have to admit, the other 2 are very cool games to play...my ranking of fun factor would be

1. CoH
2. WoW
3. EQ2

Now ya'll have to understand, I grew up in an area that had NO children my age. When I was 10 everyone else was turning 16-19 years old. Comics, television and reading were my only source of fun. And I was one of the first kids at school to have my own vcr, televsion and computer in my room...I think I was also the only kid to have the old game systems in my room...back when they were new and awe inspiring, and I have all three of the new consoles and I try and get the newest technology when it comes out, my house could probably be listed as the biggest lightning rod in Texas! I'm a geek nerd from hell, I admit it and I'm proud of it. All three of these games grab my passions from childhood. And whatever mood hits me, is the game I'll play...though, more times then not, when I log off WoW or EQ2, I log straight into CoH for awhile, when I do that, I just grab a hero out of the air to play.

I will probably let my EQ2 sub run out (to me the game is just kinda boring), but, I do like the fun factor of WoW because of the myth and magic setting and will keep that one for the time being. I will however fight tooth and nail to keep my CoH sub active, I just have too much fun playing this game and making ya'll roll your eyes at what I post next. la la la!! I can't help it.

Ok, the rambling is over...got off on a tangent I think. Ooops. LOL

Hummm,

My entire SG has moved to WoW. I cannot understand why. I quit Asheron's Call 2, and they did too, because it was setup pretty much the same way WoW is, you have to make your own armor, weapons etc. I guess people are drawn to the pretty new graphics and riding large cats. Shrug.

I used to be a Delta Force player... USED TO BE.

And thanks to the wonderful COH developers giving out the 14 day trial at Valentine's Day, I have a friend turning from the dark side of Star Wars Galaxies to COH. Currently he is splitting time... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

The only thing I am waiting for with anticipation is NCSoft's upcoming (September 2005 hopefully) Auto Assault. I have requested a Beta account, but will have to wait and see. Check out the storyline and the graphics so far, looks fun. I have always liked post-Apocalypse storylines.

On the flip side, I will probably get a 1 or 2 month subscription to Middle Earth since I am such a big Tolkien fan and I want to see what they have done for (or to) the world. Doubt it will be more than a novelty for me though.

Lastly, I am waiting to see how Guild Wars is reviewed. My wife may like it, so I may sign up there too just so I can team with her on occasion. She has never liked the SuperHero genre.

That is my interest in MMORPGs at the moment. Although I hope someone comes up with a Call of Cthulhu MMORPG at some point. I know at least Linkmaxwell and I will become lifetime members.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Oh yes I'm definetly looking forward to Guild Wars, mainly because from what I've heard, it's a lot of fun, and it's free! I'm dropping WoW for a while until I get a job, I just can't afford both of them right now lol. But, World of Warcraft in my opinion one of the best games ever, but it's go nothing on City of Heroes.

Hummm,

Turbine is using the same engine/play system as AC2, so I know I will not like it. Which is a shame, I've waited years for this to come to fruition.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

I dont blame you

I too stopped playing Worlds of Warcraft

1. No death penalty. This means that upon death, players don't care that they died, because nothing at all has punished them for dying, other than 10% durability, big deal. No death penalty means that most players will not give a crap to perform better in a group, make poor choices and wipe more. I mean why bother tightening skills? There is no penalty for dying, like XP/loot loss. If you resulted in consequence from PvE death, I can assure you the skill levels of most people would begin to rise, they'd start caring.

2. Levelling is TOO fast. Yeah at first, you think, well this is great I don't have to play 20 hours a day to level up. Well, when I started grouping and people didn't know how to play their classes, such as a mage asking 'what is polymorph?' (at level 42!- seriously.) when I asked why he wasn't doing that to adds; or when a melee does not assist the main tank, clearly this proves the learning curve is virtually non-existant. People don't know HOW to play in a group, some don't even know their class. They are too busy blowing through levels because to them, the higher level they are, the better they must be, right? I've been grouped with 60s who had no clue how to perform in a group. No scale of difficulty = no real learning process. That hurts later on.

3. Tradeskills have low returns on them, unless you have a ton of time to put into doing them to make some kind of profit. I got over 250 in engineering before realizing more money was going out than would ever come in. Cut them a break and give them more things to sell. How about failing a tradeskill once in a while as well? My orc can't be that smart to never fail and have to retry something at least ONCE.

5. Severe lag problems resulting from large scale cross-faction (20+) fights in capitol cities that affect the entire server.

6. Talents. I've respecced about 6 times I believe, and I love being penalized to pay high prices because I didn't fully understand that half of the talents are junk and wouldn't really benefit me at all. I think a 2-3 week cooldown on respec is more reasonable, I sure don't make boatloads of gold. Most I ever had was enough to get a mount, and not much more.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Well I just got accepted for the Matrix Online Beta stress test #2 so I'm curious to see what Sega and Monolith can do for the MMO genre. Needless to say I was going to wait for the reviews and give it 6 months to mature however it looks like I'll have a nice preview to see if its worth subscribing to that was well as CoH.

I'll let you know what I think of this new MMO due for release later this year sometime later this week. Its certainly got as deep a combat system as COH thats for sure.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

I wish I had the time to play another MMORPG. I love City of Heroes, but I'd like to try out WoW, as a lot of friends play it. But alas, I have work and a social life outside of gaming that eats up a bit of my time, so I really only have time to play 1. So CoH wins.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

I've tried out WOW and EQ.

EQ is too complicated. It's like Final Fantasy. You spend so much time mucking around with your character you never get to play.

WOW has nice, cutsey graphics and all, but other than that, it's just another fantasy game. Big whoop. And after all that stuff Supreme had to say, it sucks even more. He was right about all of it. Especially the death penalty thing.

The graphics aren't just pretty! They're really pretty! Theyre manga-ish! I loved that game when it came out!

But it wore off after a while...

Supreme Soldier actually summed up my reasons pretty well...

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Im quite tempted by Middle Earth also but the whole thing is if I want to play CoH and CoV then how will I ever play Middle Earth. Think about how many alts you have on CoH, add all the alts you will make on CoV and then have time for MO. There is only 24 hours in a day. A little for sleep, a little for family and friends, and little for other recreation/hobbies. Only if I could go with no sleep! Damn you Sandman!

It's funny. I was in Best Buy this weekend and I had WoW in hand, but I thought about it and how between work, going out, house stuff, etc, I just don't have time for another game. So I put it back down. Maybe sometime, but not today. :)

A skinny on Matrix Online

What is the Matrix?

As they say, no one can be told. They have to see it for themselves. The same goes for MxO and its supposed revolutionary skill systems and 'innovative' game mechanics.

Consider if you will City of Heroes, however your hero has the ability to possess any powerset in the game but can only load so many powers at once. As they level they can load more and more powers. The higher powers cannot be attained through NPCs, they need to be made by players. To make the powers you need loot, various types of loot which is randomly dropped so harvesting mobs is pointless for rare pieces.

Everything seems fine and dandy on the surface, crafters need fighters for resources. Fighters need crafters for their abilties. But this is where the system falls apart. Because every fighter has the ability to just swap his powers to be a crafter at a moments notice.

The end result is an MMO that isn't an MMO. Its a singleplayer game where other people are sharing the world with you. They never talk to you, they never need you and you never need them. Occasionally they talk to ask for duels or if they have a question. But on the whole none of the gameplay is shared.

Its the game that CoH nearly became, with players able to be self sufficient. Then Cryptic realised that players weren't interacting and invented the archtypes.

The combat system is also a pain, partly due to a poor camera that likes to spend its time in the least useful position like pointing at the floor or zoomed in so close that you can only see the torso and arms of the two in a fight. Then there's the HUD which is in the middle of the screen obscuring the action.

Fighting itself when compared to CoH would be like this. Imagine that every time you used one of your powers that it hit for a different amount, not only that but each time you did it the enemy also hit you. They too also found that it hit for a random about of damage. Then you have one move that almost always causes a ton of damage, but it too has random damage but almost always hits harder than the opponent. Finally lets say that all status effects are also applied at random, you can break from of them... but only at random.

Fights are certainly impressive to witness, but because of this random nature of the combat system and the lack of any feedback in order to make choices based on your situation you often ask yourself... how did I win Or how did I lose?

So that in a nutshell is MxO online, a single player game that wants so baddly to be an MMO but doesn't acheive it. On the plus side its missions can be solved multiple ways which is a bonus over CoH. Not to mention there's very little travelling around.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

This is the first game like this I have ever played. I WAS a Playstion head. I only played a few games on it though. TOmb Raider and Gran Turismo. COH has got to be the funnest game I have ever played. I love the puzzle aspect as well as the teamming up aspect. I never played any of the on-line Playstaion games. I never wanted to. I watched a friend play COH one day. He let me create a character on his account. And BOOM !!!!!!! I was hooked. There is nothing like getting away from the everyday grind and going to another world where you can pretty much be what ever you want to be, as far as a superhero goes. Gran Turismo is the best racing game I have ever played and COH is the best all around game I have ever had the pleasure of playing.
I have met SOOOOOO many people from all over the world. If you have team speak it makes it even funner. I can play and talk to be people from all over the world who have the same interest in this game as I do.
My wife used to hate me playing this game. She couldn't understand why I played it so much. Well , I figured ok, you want to know, here you go. I let her create a character. Now she has about 7. Get the point. LOL. She hates video games. But this game is so easy to play and so in depth, she couldn't help but become a COH junkie. We HAVE to play this everyday now. I mean HAVE TO.
Unfortunatley we only have one PC, so we were constantly fighting over who gets to play. So, we have created characters that we build together. We want to play together so much, But we can't afford another PC, so we did that so we can at least play together. I must say thank you to the COH creators. You have given my wife and I a chance to play a game together. "That I won't beat her at." LOL

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Back when this thread was fresh, Slate.com coincidentally had an article pondering the success of WoW. By way of praising CoH, it said:

QUOTE
Many gamers, though, don't avoid multiplayer online games because the quests are too difficult. They avoid them because the quests are too nerdy; it's hard to brag on your Nerve ad that you spend 20 hours a week playacting as a Night Elf. Enter City of Heroes. The game's central conceit—superheroes—is, admittedly, still a bit geeky, but it's nowhere near the hail-fellow-well-met medievalist vibe of World of Warcraft and EverQuest.

Aye, verily.

One thing the article misses, though, is the central reason for my addiction to CoH. To wit, I'm paying money for it. I get billed every month whether I play or not, so I might as well play often. And I'd better work at lvling my main character, since that's the only way to unlock new storylines.

There's SO much content, even for lowbies. There's a slightly different story for every origin at the low levels, plus the differences between starting in AP or GC. I started a character in Galaxy last night and it's all storylines I've never had before. I love it! The low levels are such a good time.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Before I ever heard of COH, I played many other MMORPGS, but I'm a bit flighty, I play, I get bored, I do something else, I get bored, etc...etc..etc... Always been that way. But COH has been different, sure I stop playing every once in a while, life gets in the way or whatever, but I always seem to come back.

What I can't stand about some of the other games is dying and having to retrieve your corpse....then you die again....and unless you could get someone to help you (which wasn't always easy) you were up a creek. Of course the other extreme, no death penalty is just as bad....gives you no reason to keep yourself from dying. I think COH has the perfect balance, going into debt is annoying enough that you don't want to get killed, but not so bad that it ruins all the fun of learning from your mistakes.

But what I REALLY love about COH is the customizability, I don't think I've played any other games that are as customizable. Not only does the appearance options make it so you are completely unique but the options for selecting your origins, archetype and power sets is fantastic. I'm not a power gamer, I don't care about having the biggest baddest character. What I do care about is have the option of having an original, customizable character.

I also love the fact that it is so easy to get a team together. From the day I started playing I've easily found teams and made friends. I've found on other MMORPG's I haven't had as much luck with that. Maybe it's because I'm not so outgoing as to broadcast and bother every person I see for a group. *shrug* And people on COH have been very friendly, very seldom do I come across a rude or annoying person.

I think the genre of "Superheroes" makes a big difference too, since most MMORPG's are either high fantasy, or somewhat sci-fi. Don't get me wrong I apsolutely love a good fantasy, but I haven't found a fantasy mmorpg that makes me as interested or entertained as COH. It's really different and that's pretty cool.

Now I'm not saying I'll never play another MMORPG, but so far COH ranks at the very top of my list, I look forward to seeing new additions and features in the future.

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Agreed. I love fantasy, but aside from a few console RPGs, I haven't found anything that really keeps my fancy for a long time..

Also: Welcome to gameamp, I see you're on post #1. I'd give a better welcome message, but I'm a little drunk. (although sober enough to notice when I make a typo...and I've made a lot in this message)

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

QUOTE

I would recommend anyone who is thinking about trying WoW to spend some time in our WoW forums. World of Warfcaft has over 1.5M subscibers as of mid-March. Obviously it is not for everyone as the above post would indicate, but a growing number of people are enjoying it very much.

Obviously the above was authored by someone who lkes CoH and really didn't like WoW. Nothing wrong with that..after all this IS a CoH forum and it is certainly not required that you like WoW. Everybody is also entirled to their opinions as long as they aren't offensive in nature (please note edit).

GameAmp hosts sites for both games and my only advice to people who have been on the fence thinking about whether they should try WoW or not try it. Take a look at some other sources, do some research and form your own opinions.

I have played CoH and WoW extensively and my opinions and views could not possibly be more different than what is posted above, but thats my opinion and everyone needs to form their own.

Enjoy the games!

Re: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

This is the only MMORPG that I've decided to play, and I don't think I'll grab another one. I've got a friend pushing me toward Middle Earth, but I don't have much interest. I've got thousands of dollars worth in comics around the house, and I get my "fix" logging on and reenacting my favorite hero exploits. I know that everyone's "geek alarm" just went flying off the handle, but I can't help it. Comics are quick, fun, and beautiful, and now they've combined with my other favorite time wasting activity - gaming. Plus, it gives me something to talk about with thousands of strangers on the internet. :) Thanks for listening.

RE: City of Heroes vs. World of Warcraft

Most of my friends play WoW. They all have lvl 60 characters, so it's mostly end-game stuff for them. I'm a loyal CoH player and will probably never play WoW. For one thing, WoW takes up TOO much time, especially when you get to higher lvls. One afternoon, my WoW-playing roommates had started an endgame dungeon. I had left to go hang with some friends and see a movie. When I got back several hours later, they had just finished beating ONE BOSS! This isn't a rare occurrence either; I've seen them spend entire weekends trying to kill a boss that had a 5% chance of dropping some rare equipment that each character only had a small chance of receiving anyway.

Also, no offense, but I think WoW players and guilds take themselves way too seriously. I've seen my WoW friends spend hours of prep for a dungeon. It's literally just a bunch of players standing around the entrance with one guy blabbering about some outrageous strategy that sounds like it took way too much time to research.

Maybe I'm misjudging WoW based on just endgame stuff, but I'm sticking to CoH. The environment is more fun and geared towards the casual player rather than the guy who will go without daylight for a fortnight just to earn enough money for a mount.
