Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

I've been spending WAY too much time PvPing considering you don't really get rewarded for the time spent (that's a whole other argument). But the one thing that is constant in the PvP zones is that some PvPers take it way too seriously. It blows me away at the insults that are being hurled back in forth. I've seen people called everything in the book (God bless the filters).

Getting killed in a PvP is not the end of the world. There are no undefeatable toons. Everyone dies in PvP zones. I love the big battles that take place in PvP zones between villains and heroes but the insults are getting out of hand. The game is suppose to be fun. Don't take it personally.

Because they're angry they cannot roleplay like the roleplayers do.

To put it simply: They are nasty punks with no social skills and this is how they take their aggression out on the world. In real life they're snot nosed 15 YO's who get beat up for school lunch money daily.

RE: Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

I've got to be honest here, I used to get angry when I got owned in PvP, and that was more often that not.

But after reading the warning whenever you enter a PvP zone, I realise, that if I didn't like it, I shouldn't go to a PvP zone.

However, that doesn't stop me from wishing that the Devs would consider changing the PvP mechanic, so that it can be enabled or disabled, (disabling should not be player controlled, kind of like WoW).

Blasters kill everything, usually before they get killed themselves. When it comes to dealing pain, a blaster has no equal. We just have a hard time taking our own medicine! So we love Tanks and 'fenders!

Wow. Aside from the fact that, like, 4 of the top PvPers are under 18...wow. I should take offense to that, seeing as I only fit under your age "fact".

So I take it you do all the flaming when people get a good smack down on you too? I'd imagine that those top 4 PvP'ers out there can take a gratious defeat when some one gets the better of them. Granted, it probably doesn't happen that often. Maybe when they are AFK......

The comment about age was made towards people that make rude comments to others when dieing to them in a PvP zone. Don't take offense unless that's what you do.

I take offense to someone bashing PvPers, which is what I am in every game I play. Nothing more.

*EDIT* Also, no, i dont talk crap. I actually avoid zone PvP for that reason, and stick to mainly test server arenas.

Whether or not you take offense to it doesn't matter. Simple fact is most PvPers are not good sportsmen and like to talk trash. They have a bad attitude and are mostly high schoolers with chips on their shoulders. I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions to the rule out there, but this is the main reason I won't go near PvP zones. AFAIC the real gamers play PvE, and it's a much easier bunch to get along with, unlike PvPers who act like they have something to prove, instead of just having fun in game. They do not role play being bad guys or whatever, they actually enjoy beating another gamer and take personal pride in thier victory like they did something important. You can keep PvP. I think it was a mistake ever adding it to this game.

Thats actually not true. An IOed out Ice/Em tank can have perma-hasten, perma-dullpain, slow resist so high that only the odd /cold power can slightly slow them, plus Hibernate and Phase Shift recharging quicker than youd think possible.

Ive fought them on Test, and seen teams of 4 fight 1 on Test. Without a /Poison MM, a Fire/Em blaster, and several Kins of Colds, theyre not going down.

Really? When I'm PvPing as a hero in Siren on Freedom, from what I've seen, sooner or later everyone goes down...on both sides. I've seen some bad ass tanks hold up to lots of fire power but if the villains (in this case) concentrate enough of their forces on said tank, the tank will eventually succumb. However, I can't say I've identified a Ice/Em tank when I'm PvPing but if what you are saying is true, I'm surprised I don't see them everywhere in pvp zones.

I would think that 4 Brutes with similar power sets to this Ice/Em tank would eventually wear him or her down. In fact, I'd think that 4 of any powerset would eventually beat a 1 of any other powerset.

Anyway, I shall be on the look out for an Ice/Em tank. I'd like to see this undefeatable toon in action.

True, most builds will go down eventually. Even ice/em tanks. But an ice/em with a good IO build, even in the hands of a less-than-perfect player, is almost impossible to beat.

I really urge you to go to Test sometime and observe the PvP. Zone PvP, its true, attract idiots. But zone PvP makes up a much smaller portion of PvP than arena, specifically upper-level Test server arena. If you watch one of the 4v4, 8v8 or 16v16 matches, you will see that is is very rare to have a complete jackass on either team. Once people realize you are interested in PvP, not whining about ganks/ats/builds or PvP in general, they will be the most helpful people you'll meet.

Also, dont start on the PvP community having more jerks. A very large portion of this game and ANY online game is made up of complete idiots that have no clue how to act in even a virtual society.

RE: Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

Wow Solaronn that's a side of you I hope I never see again.

Sportsmenship? It's a game. The people in the Pvp zone are defintly going to give you bad attitude. Kids or not,Pvp zones (Those that don't relize it) can put someone under stress. Either getting killed right after you just took a trip from the Hospital,to having some random guy AS you and then gloat about it. Ofcourse that's going to make someone mad,And as the anger builds your rage builds,so finally when you kill the guy you get to gloat back and that's when the argument starts.

I do understand what your saying Solaronn,Yes kids or tweens like to hang out in there cause they have the free chance to act like a jerk and not get petitioned for it.

It really depends on your Gameplay.

Xol, I've gone into warburg and a few other zones when they first were added and saw nothing but jerks, save for a select few who were just playing the game etc. Nothing irked me more in warburg then when a group of heroes attacked a group of us (Also heroes) as we got off that ship. This was the typical example we are speaking about. Wise ass comments, lots of plain arrogant nastiness aimed at other heroes. It typifies this entire discussion. I understand what you are saying about test server and arena PvP but this conversatsion started out talking about zones. Whether you like it or not, there are a ton of lousy attitude kids in these zones PvPing, and being that I DO NOT Believe in political correctness I'm going to call it like I see it and not mince words. I'm not making apologies for what I said earlier at all. I believe PvP in zones is filled with nasty kids who have a chip on their shoulders, period.

RE: Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

I blew up at someone the other day when i was playing my brute, I was in siren's and was fighting against my friends lvl 50 heroes, he wanted to test them out in PvP, so he brings them, we broadcast "DarkDecimator and *his name here* about to duel, plz dont interfere" and yet there was this one blaster who couldnt get the message the fight took about 30 mins (we both kept running out of end XD). And just as the fight hit the climax of the deciding hit, the poopy headed blaster comes up and just starts wailing on me.

P.S that was a lot of quotes up there lol.

P.S.S. i take somewhat offense to the high schooler remark.

You're making excuses for the people who this thread is about. The ones who inspired the first poster to be annoyed in the first place. No, I'm not 'turning down" every teen ager on game amp. I'm talking about the PvPers who are nasty, arrogant and look to ruin someone elses good timeut for tsh sake of saying they could. There's no excuse for that at all. If you like PvP , more power to you. Mysel;f, I stay out of those zones for just this reason. Nowhere did I say every kid who plays the game is an arrogant punk PvPer who is out to do nothing but give everyone a hard time. We're talking about a specific group here in teh PvP zones, and what constitutes their make up.

RE: Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

As Beldar Conehead would say, "Maintain low tones!"

This started out as a decent thread, but it's heating up a little bit. Let's try and play nice and not take any cheap shots.

Don't take offense to comments made about PvPers, PvEers, teenagers, old farts, soccer moms or tricked out truck drivers. PvP is a source of frustration with people because it's about competition and anything that involves competition has a large potential to bring out the worst in people.

If you read a comment that you take as offensive, take a minute before you reply. When someone says 15 year olds are immature, it's because 90% of them are. I'm still a strapping young lad of 24, but old enough to realize I'm still very immature at times.

If your going to use generalities for a group of individuals, try and narrow the sample that you are talking about. i.e. PvPers who talk trash. When someone talks badly about 24 year olds with bodies like Greek Gods, I would probably get a little upset because I fall into that category. But if they 24 year olds with bodies like Greek Gods that kick kittens and puppies, I wouldn't be mad because I don't do that and that person needs 1. a hug and 2. kicked in the butt.

What I guess I'm trying to say is be a little nicer and get some thicker skin!

When I get killed in pvp, and the person really rubs it in...maybe i'll take it personally. Usually when I kill someone
I say awesome duel and maybe a suggestion if they needed it.
Usually I don't broadcast"wtf man?!" usually something sarcastic...nothing direct :P

RE: Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

I am now curious as to which servers you guys play on (aside from Test cause that was mentioned) I have several toons that are anything but built for PvP and I cheat a little and when i reach the appropriate lvl i will enter the appropriate zone and complete my 3 Patrols and maybe a small mish or two cause the xp and infl seems to be higher.

now out of about 7 toons and several PvP zones i have only witnessed offensive arguments once. i have been invited to duel and declined a couple of times and accepted a couple of times and watched a few and both the CoV and CoH players conduct themselves like friends playing a one on one fighting game and ususally whoever wins is nice to the other guy and vice versa. Like i said i have seen it get way out of hand once and unfortunately the person who was out of control was a friend of mine and he no longer plays any MMO, (he is a bit Loo-Loo anyway but good hearted)

anyway maybe i am not spending enough time in there, but it was never really as bad as you guys make it out to be. that is why I am curious which server you play on lol so i can avoid it.

RE: Why do some PvPers take it so personally?

I remember once I was in the Web in Warburg on my brute. I had just gotten the badge for launching the rocket a bunch so I was just screwing around. I was sorta hiding up on this ledgey thing on the ceiling, and when a hero happened by I pounced!

He dispatched me in short order, and staring up at him from the floor I said "well played hero, well played". And we shared a chuckle :P

That reminds me when i was in warburg, i was healing a friend and had fly this tanker (i forget his name) kept trying to kill me because i was healing someone who killed him. When i would fly REALLY high and out of his reach he would broadcast "Shruiken is a bleeping bleep who enters a PvP zone to run and hide" when i kindly explained to him, i was there to help a friend and i had no offensive abilities whatsoever. He then continued and i pulled my trump card!!!!! A call to the devs lol. they sorted it out and he left me alone about that.

That's a great story!
Really, that's how we all should try and look at the PvP zones. When you enter, you get a huge warning that tells you anything goes. And in that case, you were one of the hazzards of being in a hazzard zone. That hero propely handled the threat and you both were light hearted about it.

Really, no one can complain about getting ganked in a PvP zone.

Don't expect to get left alone from mission to mission. You have a timer once you leave a hazzard zone mish to get the next one and get to it. Hussle your ass if you don't want to get popped..... remember where you are.

If you die at the hands of another player, hero or otherwise you get no debt. It's just a quick trip to the hospital or SG base.

Don't plan events in a hazzard zone and expect the rest of the community to respect it. I attempted to watch a duel one day that I saw announced in chat. While I was watching, one of the members of the SG doing the duel ganked me while I was standing there. I promptly announced it to the PvP players of my SG and we shut it down. Killing anything that moved. Of course we got flamed for doing it. We told them to go use the arena or just keep dieing here. There choice.

It's a hazzard zone for the entire gaming community, not your own personal playground. Don't plan a picnik in a hurricane and get mad at the wind for takin your sammich.

I've been ganked WAY more times than I've been the victor. And of course the person that got me gets the "OH THAT $&*(@#%&@%#!%!" while I yell in my room, not in real chat that they can see. Then I chuckle and tell them in the game "Good job. You might not get so lucky next time =P". If I see them again, I'll go out of my way to try and get em, but I'm not going to get mad if they beat me again. At least not mad at them, more mad at my lame PvP skillz.

I just can't find myself getting too mad at anyone that ganks me in a PvP zone any more than I get at Malta wiping a PvE group. It's just part of the game. There is soo much content and places to play if this does not suit your play style. I think some people just try too hard to go to these PvP zones and get the uber EXP and not respect the consequences of the environment.

I really like the PvP zones for running missions because I like that urgency you feel in the PvP zones. AI mobs are stupid and have short patrol routes. Real people hunting me makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up on end. I like that thrill when I do the missions there.

I also don't think age really plays into it that much. I've seen 30 year old players act like children, and teens that act so much better than them to the point that I don't belive them the first time they tell me they are 14. I think that it's more about maturity than age.

This story reminds me of one of my first PVP scenes. I had Killr and he was a fresh 50. I went into RV and got on a team. We started battling back and forth, when all of a sudden GW and Recluse himself (NPCs)show up and really started hitting us heroes hard. One of our tanks is doing a pretty good job of holding their aggro. So I do the blaster thing and just start nailing them. Now remember, I was, and still am really new to the PVP zones. So there I am firing away, and making a really sweet stalker target I was soon to find out. This stalker creeps up and POW AS and I go down. I literally laughed out loud. All this time spent here at GA reading about the dangers of stalkers, and I was victimized by my own ignorance. A few of us (all strangers to me) were laughing about it. "Did yall see that squishy go down?" I got so caught up in the moment of seeing the signature villains I forgot all about where I was.

Okay, Forty lashes for me...

An unprovoked "stupid nOOb" insult aimed at me today, caused me to lay into another player (Good thing for the filters). I guess I also take some things personally in PvP zones. Yikes, didn't know I had it in me.

Ashamed and red-faced...
