PotBS will be part of SOE Station!

Great news! Well, at least for us station players.

QUOTE
First of all, the Contract is signed. A joint press release will be going out tomorrow morning, but it’s important to all of us here that our community hear it first and here it straight from us. So without further ado:

Pirates of the Burning Sea will be published in partnership with Sony Online Entertainment’s Platform Publishing. This is an important deal for Flying Lab Software and we know how passionate our community is about this issue. So before you start posting your thoughts on our forums, let me share how this particular arrangement differs from publishing deals you may have read about in the past.

So what is “Platform Publishing”? It’s a partnership program in which SOE and an independent developer work together to release a game. It’s very different from SOE’s main publishing efforts, where they develop the games internally (i.e. Everquest 2, Star Wars: Galaxies). Instead the developer makes the game, SOE publishes it, and together we divvy up the various responsibilities.

Read it all the details HERE.

RE: PotBS will be part of SOE Station!

Yay!

I think Flying Labs made the right choice.
SOE has shown with Vanguard that they're not the villains SWG NGE traumatized emotional cripples make them out to be, and for distribution (that's the tedious work of forcing shops to have your product on shelves and handling the equally tedious subion fees) you can't do better than SOE.

Well, maybe NCSoft is slightly better on the finance handling, but NCSoft wants your IP and Flying Labs wasn't going to hand that over. Sweetness all around I'd say.
And with PotBS becoming part of Sony Station access, that portfolio is finally starting to look like value for your money. Still, you'd have to play 2 games each month to break even and three to be ahead of the money. Who has time for that these days?

Very excited about this great news!

RE: PotBS will be part of SOE Station!

Last I looked this morning there were 61 pages of commentary on the official forum complaining about this decision. I was a SOE subscriber for three years with Planetside. While most of my issues with SOE was due to game content changes (constant nerfs/buffs and then the problems with BFR's) it was ultimately the updater that made my game unplayable. Unknown to me it one day became incompatible with McAfee and replicated itself thoroughout my system files acting like a virus. It took days to root out all of the files relating to both McAfee and PS so my PC worked again. Then the billing issues arose. I was double billed for a quarterly subion I was no longer using. I had to cancell and eat the cost, they don't do refunds.

So do I have concerns with SOE? You bet! However it won't stop me from buying this game. The fact that FLS has been so open and responsive to the community tells me that their word is good as gold that they won't let SOE or any other entity screw up the game. It doesn't hurt that I've met personally with Rusty and many of the devs both in Flying Lab and off site in less formal settings for frank talks. It pays to live near the company offices and to bribe them with goodies to get in! ;)

He he he.
I think where some of the Vanguard drama kings and queens went when Sigil croaked, by the sound of that ;-)

Seriously. No need to worry:
- SOE doesn't touch the game.
- SOE doesn't touch the servers.
- SOE doesn't touch the game.
- SOE just handles the box and the subs.

Besides, name one MMORPG, or networked application that hasn't had an issue with Symantec at one time or another. :-)
While SOE has a spotty track-record, it's no better or worse than that of any other update service provided by publishers and no where near as bad as Symantec's.
I firmly believe that the best thing to do with Symantec is uninstall it and choose a random other antiviral/security application to improve both your enjoyment of pc use and it's security. Especially if you use simplified Chinese...

I have been a very happy station access subscriber for almost 2 years now without any problems so I can't help but be very excited about this news.
